  1. True, true... but then we have to account for the huge "squirrel" tracks entering from the top left, converging on the hapless hare. See how his hopping increases dramatically? Something had his tail up. If it was a wolf after him, there'd be a few postholes angled toward the hare, and bunny guts. So I think something was plowing the snow, rather than floating or postholing. It wasn't a wolverine, it could have been a lynx, but more likely a big fox or small coyote, just because the things are everywhere, and the torso spacing between front and back legs is about two feet. It's that, or the eagle strapped on snowshoes and hiked off into the brush. Kinda like this?
  2. Wow, that's a heck of a nice engagement watch! Just kidding... congratulations!
  3. Mmmmmm, Spyderco... You're right, Dems, it's the folders that will come apart when they get old or if they're not well made. Those are the ones that will cut your fingers off. In my mind a folder and a fixed blade have different purposes and lifespans. For fixed blade, you can't do better than Helle:
  4. Great information! Let's keep it going. In case anyone's interested here's a table of common steels used in the knife industry.
  5. Yes, a good knife can get very expensive. But a rep knife can be VERY dangerous too, like if its pivot collapses at the wrong time. For safety reasons alone, I always recommend against reps when personal safety is at stake... if you're going to use the things. Shawn got me quite a few genuine SOGs for quite a discount. He can get almost anything you want, rep or gen. Here are some saved threads from him: ---START--------- Hey Bob, Sorry for the delay, I've been occupied with a new job and haven't sold many knives lately. To get an accurate quote, I really need the model number of the below knives to make sure I am quoting the right knife and color, if applicable. For example there are 3 different models of the Twitch 1 and about 12 models of the Chive. But, I'll take a bit of a guess at what your scout wants. Sog Twitch 1 retails for $50, my price is $33 Sog Micron retails for $18, my price is $12 Kershawn Chive aluminum retails for $55, my price is $37 I have to place at least a $150 order to be allowed to order from my distributor. Maybe you could get a couple of the guys to order at the same time so everyone saves. All prices include shipping and postage! Let me know, pal. Shawn Bob wrote: Hey Shawn, thanks for the reply. Here are the knives my scout is looking at prices for as comparison: SOG Twitch 1 (the small one) SOG Micron 1 Kershaw Chive (Aluminum) Also I have three Eagle Scout Courts of Honor coming up, so I'll be buying a nice knife for each of them. I'm sort of leaning toward the SOG Trident with the resin non-slip handle. I'll check the website and get model numbers so you can give me some prices. I still use my SOG knives all the time and the scouts are astounded how they stay so sharp. Cheers! -Bob ----Original Message Follows---- From: King Jubilee Subject: Re: Knife links Bob, No problem, here is an email friendly version of links to the brand named knives. If you get together a bulk order, I will make sure you guys get a really special deal. Thanks, Shawn If you have a particular brand named knife that you want, let me know and I will see if I can purchase it from one of my suppliers. If available, I can usually get it to you at least 70% of retail price. This price would include shipping and delivery confirmation. 6. You know what I miss? The erudite, pithy and flippin' hilarious reparte' betwixt Dems and TTK. Klink too, for that matter. The Queen's English just sounds so much better when wielded as a saber instead of a club.
  7. Close, but I think it goes a step further than your scenario... See how the hare came out from the protection of the tree trunk into the open? A couple hesitating hops, then he started the BIG leaps... just as an arctic fox or small coyote came along from the left of the picture. The snow was deep and the fox was struggling, eyes on his prey, and he didn't see the eagle coming. That's about a 6-foot wingspan so the eagle was big enough to choose the bigger meal, and let the hare go.
  8. Oh, and a half dozen bald eagles, two snowy owls (that do NOT like the eagles), and fewer and fewer snowshoe hares every day.
  9. The last good coin-edge bezel and insert I saw on the 'Bay went for over $1,600. Mere pocket change when you see prices like these!
  10. Lani, that's not in too bad condition. It doesn't have too many spiderwebs yet, and it does look to be genuine. But the seller has a lot of typos in his ad and that makes me wonder. He calls it a 6538 and a 6536, and a 3536. He also says the model should have an 8mm crown. All that makes me shy away from something like this. And the price... for half that amount you should be buying a perfect example of a complete 6538 with provenance, instead of just a dial.
  11. Yeah, that deck is tall enough that most people can walk under it. That sort of puts it in perspective. In the last 24 hours, we've had a bear right outside our window (I looked out into the dark and told my daughter she was imagining it, and then it gruffed at me, about 12" away through the glass) and we had the big bull moose, another 2nd year moose, we had a big old wolf in the back yard, and a bobcat. We got 3" of snow today and it seems like it brought out the critters!
  12. Well hello there, Mister Moose! I'm glad I looked before I ran out the door...
  13. This all makes sense but I'm still having vapor lock over the crystal. It's Clarks' equivalent of a tropic-22 but it fits loosely by what feels like a millimeter? How did you ultimately get it to work, and with what parts? Man, I think I need to build one of these! The 1016 is one of my all-time favorites. Nicely done!
  14. Not the first time it's happened, won't be the last. I have a friend that had this done to his Ford 1-ton Econoline van, bear tore the side cargo door completely off. A trans-Alaska trip would be a hoot, don't worry about the bears, just keep a clean camp.
  15. Nicely done! I like the hands, bezel and insert and the case shaping.
  16. If you measured the lip over which the new crystal will fit, you can use this GS reference to figure out what might, or might not work.
  17. Verrrrrrrrrrry nice! Both Yuki bracelets I received had damaged endlinks. He has kindly offered to take them back, but I've managed to fix one. I'll send the other back. I was able to bend my Yuki endlinks to fit the VERY thin case on my 6536. It wasn't easy. I used a clear glass table and a lot of thumb pressure. I very carefully examined how the stock links fit into my lugs, and looked the lugs over very carefully to set their profile in my mind's eye. Then looking down through the glass, I pressed the lugs up against the backside of the glass toward me, to create the proper curve/profile as I pushed upward with my thumb. I watched them give a little with a springy action, then pressed just a little harder, adjusting the angle I was pushing with, until I felt them "let go" a little and take a new set. I did NOT press just at the tips of the links, I did not want to "dog ear" them. I was pressing closer in toward the middle. Then I'd fit the links into my lugs and look it over again very carefully. I went through those steps many times for each of the four "points" and I'm very happy with the results.
  18. Col, I hear ya. It would be an absolute crying shame to lose the polar bear. They're THE apex predator and genetically distinct. There's just no replacing them. However, I don't think you need to worry about it. Populations increased from ~7,000 in the late 70s to ~25,000 now. All the best recent studies differ a little in the numbers, but there are approx. 21 distinct populations in the arctic, and approx. 59% of those populations are stable, or increasing in numbers. Many of the rest are simply "unknown". They are notoriously hard to count, but the "man on the ground" who lives and breathes there can tell you there are plenty of them around. http://www.ncpa.org/pub/ba551/ Let's see those carvings! I bet they're magnificent.
  19. Eagles? You're not safe there either. Bada$$ birds.
  20. I read some articles last night that reached some fascinating conclusions. 21. I think you could take that little rascal home and sit him on your lap and he'd make one heck of a fine house pet. Until his mama ate you.
  22. I think I'll continue what Lani started with his TGraph Pro shots. Black Lung for me.
  23. Tats? Did someone say TATS? Oh this oughta be good. I think Shundi is gonna win this, um, hands down.
  24. I dunno, what are the airflow characteristics of bear hide?
