  2. Absolute rubbish. The UK has been ruled by unelected and unaccountable officials in Brussels for far too long. As for immigration equaling racism, I've rarely heard such crap. The UK had welcomed immigrants with open arms for years. I've worked in industry whereby we rely on immigrants to provide cheap labour and no one I've come across is racist. People are fed up with our small island having to accept Brussels decisions, and yes, that includes taxation, laws and immigration to name a few. This maybe good for the UK and other European countries into the future, time will tell.

  3. Hello fellow brethren. Let me start by saying that this project was not overly thought out as I cobbled it together this week using various parts I had lying around the house and office. Several months ago, Tonneywatches out of Singapore popped into the scene offered a variety of vintage Rolex parts, both genuine and rep. I decided to investigate his offering and ordered a 5510 midcase set as well as a claimed refinished 5510 explorer dial. The case needed a lot of work (as expected) to get it right. Here's what it looked like: It's very "boxy" and the bevels were quite poor. It has since been made a bit more correct. The dial was advertised to be a genuine plate and the gilt was negative relief. There are some issues but certainly better than the other "gilt" dials from the likes of Yuki and HR. The lacquer was a bit too glossy and lume looked a bit too fresh. I've managed to soften the sheen a tad and patinized the non-glow lume a few shades. Bezel is chrome plated brass. I managed to removed much of the chrome to reveal the brass and it accepts gen inserts. The retention ring is also gen spec. For the crown, I used a gen 8mm brevet and replaced the crappy tube with an Athaya tube I forgot I had. The crystal from tonney is poor and replaced it with a used gen T-19 service crystal. As for movement, I used a gen cal 1530. Hands are gen 5513/12 hands. Insert is a used mid font service insert. Not sure I will keep this, but for now, I will keep it in the rotation so I put less wear/tear on my 6548. Here is the finished project:

  5. The British colonized almost half of the world and amalgamated the "British Isles" into the UK which no one pretends is an equal partnership with the other countries involved. Countless nations have fought for independent governance from the British in the past. Now they hold a referendum for independence from the EU because they don't want Britain to be influenced by the interests of politicians who weren't directly elected by the British. This could be a long winded definition for a word that is universally hard to define. The campaign to leave the EU was more ironic than it was racist and let's face it, it was pretty racist.

  6. If it stops with the dial down, only one area to look in. On the yuki I have noticed that the ears of the balance bridge get bent very easily. I'm guessing you cked the hair spring to make sure everything is ok there. If so, here is my guess. Like lumbee said, could be a cracked or missing jewel in the base plate for the end of the balance staff that sits there. Could need some oil, although that doesn't usually cause your problem. Have you tried loosening the 2 screws that hold the bridge on and see if it starts on it's own. If so, slightly bend the ears down and gradually tighten the bride screws. I'm just guessing on all this stuff. Here is the order I think it should be cked in. First remove the bridge assy. Then ck the balance staff. Make sure it's straight and not broken off. Then look at the jewel, if it has one, in the base plate to make sure it's not cracked or cocked or missing. You will need a loop to ck it. If all that looks good, simply install the balance bridge and only start the 2 screws. It should kick off as soon as you push the stem in. If not, rotate back and forth gently to see if it starts. If it does, turn each screw 1 flat at time. If it stops after 2 0r 3 turns, your bride is bent. If it won't run at all, you now have to go to the train bridge. That's a whole new set of problems.

  7. "The UK has been ruled by unelected and unaccountable officials in Brussels for far too long. As for immigration equaling racism, I've rarely heard such crap." +1 (from the USA) Almost every problem in the free world today was caused by politicians. Otoh, one big problem 'the people' brought upon themselves is overpopulation. (imho)

  10. 508's post is very enlightening and "...would you wear it on the bus? " is a winner. Most of the 'Big Time' watch guys I know/knew are past their prime in the market and when I was trading watches, a super nice 5513 or 1680 was $1500 or $1800 to buy. I am behind the times now due to lack of interest (and $$) but I can tell when prices are getting out of bounds. I bet most of the dealers mentioned above have a 'secret mechanic' who swaps parts around from watch to watch and puts 'high dollar' watches together out of the best parts, all the guys I knew did. Out of all the 'Big Time' watch guys I knew...only one was basically honest and he had a professional 'detail guy' who turned average (mostly rolex) watches into 'near mint', a common practice. Imagine the expertise a 'vintage rolex specialist' is willing to employ when turning a $4k lemon/lime 1680 into a $15k creampuff. Laser welding?? 'Aged' replica parts in genuine vintage bracelets?? For sure. Thanks for the replies.

  12. If you must have rep sunglasses, then head over to RWI and start looking at the Ali Express thread in the Off Topic area. Dozens of members have purchased rep glasses and have posted reviews of the glasses and the sellers. They have tested them with UV cards and the good ones are blocking both UVA and UVB and have glass lenses. There are rep Ray Bans and Persol, Tom Ford, Oliver Peoples, and a few other brands reviewed. You have to buy the seller, though, and that is a moving target. Some sellers started off good and then quickly went rogue. I haven't bought anything but just thought you would like to know if you are set on getting some rep glasses. 13. Your post shows you are new to watch collecting dear friend. You'll probably be much surpriseto know that Cartier, Tiffanys and other high end brand names asked Rolex to let them use a few square millimeters on Rolex dials to make a statement by associating their names tot he Rolex brand, a name that doubtless is the most pretigeous in the market, when it comes to worldwide recognition. So, if you happen to run into one of these, let us know. There will be quite a few ready to sell their etire collection to grab one.
