  2. Shaken not stirred. Aka. Not another Bond Thread!!! (Pic. Heavy) Something i threw together on RWI. I thought I might share it here. What is our fascination with this sociopath, misogynistic, alcoholic, emotionally dysfunctional, sickly charming, ruthless killing machine? He might be all these things but the films and the character exude style, taste and there is a little bit in all of us that wants to escape into the fantasy world in which he resides. One really has to question the effectiveness of a secret agent whose preference for alcohol beverages is known to every bartender in every exotic location throughout the world. Anyway, lets re-visit the much written about Bond Watches. Along with Cars and women this is another area where the character displays great taste and style. However, the only thing he really chooses or seduces is the women, we know that Q (not @QueTip) chooses his cars and watches. So, Q is the man. The great thing for Bond, unlike us, is he gets them all for free. So here we go, some but not all of the 007 watches. Hours of research watching and freeze framing went into this thread lol. Joking of course but now since this watch hobby (addiction) has overcome me I cannot watch a Bond film without my finger hovering over the pause button for those minuscule glimpses of 007 arm candy. Rolex 6538. There has been some debate over the years regarding what Rolex Sean Connery wears and the provenance of it. However due to the advent of DVD and Blue Ray it is now fairly obvious. As @Thrasher is tired telling people the Connery sub is a 6538 big crown, with a silver triangle and a 2 line metres first gilt dial. The strap was generally considered to be an admiralty grey nato. We now know it was a black red and green undersized RAF strap. It was also worn on a Black leather strap in Dr. No. and From Russia with love. The RAF strap appeared in Goldfinger. Again, in Thunderball the 6538 tells the time while the Breitling Top Time tells supplies the Geiger counter. My version is the Helenarou Connery Submariner. It is a work of art in my biased opinion. Rolex 5513 An early appearance of the 5513 is displayed by George Lazenby in “On her Majesty’s secret service”. It was made more prominently worn by Roger Moore in “Live and Let Die” and “Diamonds are forever”. It had the buzzsaw bezel in “Live and Let Die” and a handy magnet for disrobing young ladies. Apart from the quirky bezel it has a feet first 2 line dial. The weird thing is when I was searching for images the photos of my watch and rivet bracelets are all over the internet lol so here it is my @JohnnyLazar built “Live and Let Die”.

  3. Finally, after an agonizing wait, my dial is here! I'm ready to commence my next build ... the iconic Rolex 6204. The first "Submariner". Okay gents, pop quiz: where did I get this bad boy? Is this a Dark Lord dial? It's gorgeous for sure, but it pales in comparison to the glorious case set I've wrangled from a well known member here. Let the games begin!

  4. Context: Bought an Oyster Perpetual 39mm (JF, 114300, Grape) from Mary (TD) that needed basic servicing. Timegrapher results provided by Mary suggested that it was gaining about +013 s/d, not ideal but fortunately fixable. About me: First rep, first automatic watch, didn't even know how to take out the extra steel links with a screwdriver - essentially a watch noob. I live in a place that does not have many rep-friendly watch-smiths, or even friendly watch-smiths for that matter - let's just say that asking the neighbourhood watch-smith to do basic servicing on a regular watch requires great patience, resilience and low expectations on the customer's part. This meant that I had to rely on recommendations on forums or risk never enjoying wearing my OP. Someone recommended Al (Legend), and so I contacted him about watch servicing. What I hoped for before I met Al: - My watch comes back in one piece, after months. I'm patient - I have waited for 27 years before getting an automatic watch, I can wait a few more months. What actually happened: - A complete disassembly, cleaning, oiling, regulation and assembly of the movement - complete with pictures showing me what was going on. I was new to the world of watches and Al was kind to take the time to explain to me what was going on, and answer my questions. - Regular updates on how my watch was doing and his QC processes. Al has excellent attention to detail and clearly takes pride in servicing each watch to the best of his ability. He also does mods, and damn, his modded watches look good. - Watch is returned to me in about 2 weeks, looking beautiful and working like a dream. If I hadn't found Al, I would probably still be stuck with a watch that was too big for my wrist, with a clone 3132 movement that is probably not oiled very well and with dust stuck inside. Eventually, the movement might stop sporadically as a result and cause the watch to fail to keep time well, which would be a shame because I really like this watch. However, the superb quality of Al's work, his affordable rates, and his excellent, transparent, communication style has meant that I can never get any watch fixed at any typical watch-smith without being disappointed. He has basically ruined me for any other watch-smiths forever, so I'm naming and shaming him right here.

  10. The diver reps, both stainless steel and forged carbon, and even the ceramic, have been touted as the best out of the box AP reps in the hobby. And yes, that is true if you look at the number of flaws in the ROO chronograph series. But yet, closely replicated as they are, flaws still exist in the diver reps. For the sake of brevity, let us run through the list of flaws Movement: The previous generation of reps uses the A2824 movement, which beats at 28800bph, but is better and more reliable than the current generation of miyota powered replicas. Miyotas can be noisy when the watch is shaken, and cheap looking/sounding. However they are fairly reliable too, and easily replaced. The gen uses a low beat 21600bph caliber 3120 AP movement. The beat difference is hardly noticeable on the wrist between 28800bph and 21600bph unless you have them side and side, and scrutinize closely. The beat of the rep movement can be modded to 21600bph as well. Dial The gen diver dial is glossy and more intricate in details, and the rep is somewhat glossed over, but not to the same extent. The difference is hardly noticeable again, but the rep dial can be gloss-finished by hand to look like the gen. Of course, dial print is sharper on the genuine diver, but not by much compared with the V7 diver. Inner dive bezel For the stainless steel, the lume construction for the numbers are significantly different, and this is a noticeable difference once pointed out to someone. For the FC, the numbers on the inner bezel are closer to genuine. Hands There is a slight difference between the shine and finish of the genuine hands vs the replica ones. But not enough to warrant any modification. Datewheel The genuine watch (before the i series) uses a serif font which the Noob (first v4 batch and earlier) replicates well. The font is nonetheless slightly smaller than the gen one. This can be fixed by installing an aftermarket datewheel. Case construction No significant difference between gen and rep here for the recent models. Any perceivable difference would not be something you can spot on the wrist. The rep FC case can be polished and buffed a little to look better, but not necessarily closer to gen. The FC material is rather organic, and each case looks different from the rest. I have seen a variety of finishes for the genuine FC cases. The glossed up pictures on the internet makes us all paranoid at times, but if you have a chance to take a look at FC case finishing on the genuine, you will be surprised at how flat (little or no marbling) some will look. Bezel screws It is a myth that bezel screws on the genuine diver are always sunken and aligned. This is not true at all, I have seen genuine divers that look otherwise. The bezel screws on the replica can be carefully aligned, polished and sunken evenly for aesthetic purposes. Crystal Bear in mind, that the gen comes with a single AR crystal. Applying double AR on a replica does enhance the look of the dial, but does not make it more accurate looking. This is a personal choice for the owner, and nothing right or wrong about it. Straps The rep rubber straps are decent, but with the host of aftermarket straps available, many choices are available at the owner's disposal. So when one mentions "best diver that money can buy", it is subjective to each owner with regards to what "best" means. Here is a fully modded diver. I’ve converted it from a miyota movement to an ETA low beat one and retained the hands. Notice the dial finish, the case finish and the datewheel. I consider this a reasonable rendition of the stainless steel diver without going franken or gen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
