  1. You may be on to something there Chris, the problem i see is getting the small triangle GMT hand.

    Good evening FxrAndy

i recall seeing the small triangle hand set somewhere but i cant remember where?

i think this will be a nice watch, ok so it may not be 100 % as the gen because i intend to use your 2893-2 fast beat so this will be a homage to the no crown guard gmt but with the vintage theme! yes it will be hard to find a small triagle hand if we do find any aftermaket they will be for a gen movement and wont work on eta mabe we can do some adapting(engineering) or make our own hand!

i like this case idea better that the 1680 also its very rare!

  2. I guess we're thinking along the same lines, aero! I've got this watch in the back of my mind

And maybe this dial from Paul- it doesn't say 'Date' at the end of Oyster Perpetual.

Thanks for the pic of your 6538 movt- I certainly can't remember back to your original post!

    Hi alligoat!

Thats it, this image has been on the back of my mind for months one thing i dont like about my thin case pepsi dial is the oyster perpetual date , well let see what will be the price of this watch, yuki has the bakelite pepsi bezel but its pricy

im lookin into using a steel insert and making a acryic insert cover and glueing it with uv addisive same as they use to glue the cyclopes on crystals this should give it a look similar to the bakelite insert and i will shape it curved as well

Thanks for the photos! a no crown guard gmt is rare even a franken! lets do it it will be a nice watch!

  3. Morning everybody,

just found this on a local Internetportal:

    http://www.willhaben.at/iad/bap/object?adId=16978234

what do you think: gen or rep? is the price not too cheap for a gen 5513?

I am new to rolex, therefore I really would appreciate the experts opinions

    Thank you, Karin

The watch looks good in the photo, but that does not mean that it will be the watch they sell you, price seems a bit low as has been said, buying rolex watches on the internet is risky sometimes the seller may not know if the watch is fake or gen! mabe some member knows of a reliable trusted seller of gens!

  4. While I don't have any comment on this particular watch, I do agree with aero and alli; it takes some imagination and creativity to see past certain pieces 'as-is' to visualize the full potential that a watch may have as a project. Some watches might not look great from the start, but with some work those pieces could result in nice builds.

Well Said, after all this is what our hobby is all about ,i have been looking for a case to use to build a rolex gmt why not use this case it would make a nice no crown gmt!!! i can see it now in my head with a bakelite pepsi bezel insert! :thumbsupsmileyanim:

  5. well today im still on easter holiday so i split the day up wearing these two watches!

    post-27094-127081985313_thumb.jpg

unmodded thin cased gmt! 2836-2 out of the box!

    post-27094-127081990736_thumb.jpg

5512 submariner with a slow beat 2873 eta that used to be fitted to a omega military watch from the 70s

this has a 6mm thick homemade acrylic crystal fitted with home made stainless steel retaining ring!

  6. Nice spot biffa!

Looks like a brevet and a coin edge bezel to me. Sure would like to see a better pearl and maybe a slow beat 2846-2, but it looks like an improvement over the old Silix/cartel offerings, with a few mods it could look pretty good- that and a good dose of judicious aging.

Nice 6538, Aeromatic- I assume it has a 1030 beating inside.

post-27094-127081772386_thumb.jpg no comment needed! check out my first post on rwg for more photos and details!!!!

and i agree with you it would make a good project!

  7. caseback is marked as a 5508 this should be the small crown thin case unique writing of "switzerladn" wonder why they do this sometimes its shiterland or rolexsa (when it should be rolex sa) well one mans junk is another mans tressure as they say!(did i spell that right? Lol! )

  8. I have used mat spray to refinish dials in the past and it does add to the durability, but if the paint does not stick well to the dial surface then that will always be a problem, the varnish will help but wont solve the underlying problem.

    Hi fxrAndy

I Agree with you on that i found these dials more fragile than the factory dials the parts of the dial that chipped came off clean i mean all that was left was the silver metal finish like i said a little work sanding the rehaunts sharp edges might help prevent this, it would be helpful to know the materials used in the yuki dials one thing i do know the yuki dials ,bezels are made using different materials than the factory ones mabe to give an aged look to the items the bezel inset on yuki looks more like the finnish you would expect on a vintage gen my 6538 insert has a blueish tint to it,it doent look like the factory finished bezel the yuki bezel insert and dial do give a vintage look without the need to vintage them yourself. in fact this vintage look was all that was needed i left the new yuki case to age naturally !

  9. Is your yuki dial a blue one too? I'm wondering if the black dials from Yuki hold up better.

Its not uncommon for one color to be stronger than another. The gen blue Tudor dials are supposed to hold up better than black, and I remember that the white blanks from ofrei were tougher than the black ones..

Its a black dial! they are great dials just fragile! i would sand down the rehaunt edges a bit to take away the sharpness i think they will hold up ok its just that i dropped my watch and the shock chipped the dial where it seats on the rehaunt!

as a member suggested a coat of varnish might help harden the surface has any member done this?

  10. Good GOd!

For that price i would expect it to have a pearl on that insert! at least! i dont care how historical it is no watch is worth that much and you can achieve a close look to that with your frankens! these prices are extreame!and as iv have said before the " tool watch message" has been lost with the result that watches like this end up in collections by persons who dont care at all about these watches its just a get rich scheme to them! they have pushed the price tag of these classic wristwatches way out of reach of the real watch enthuiasts!

  11. Great to see divers watches in water! where they belong i have found that most good reps are ok in water despite the dealers reconmending you keep them away from water, the number one rule is to remember that no watch even a gen is water resistant for ever, one of the reasons that watches were later marked water resistant instead of waterproof! as seen on some old seamasters, and these watches need service and when required replacing seals ect i have used my reps in the swimming pool and the sea without problems i found one of the best ways to check your watch at home is to remove the movement and dial leaving the crown and backcase closed and submerge your watch in a bucket of water overnight!

I read somewhere that speedmasters and datonas even gen are only water resistant when the subdial pushers are close and you must never operater the subdial pushers while you are underwater Please correct me if i wrong here!

Any members buying the new series 1665 with the superdome crystal have it checked we have found that a few have cracked crystals close to the base mabe caused when the crystal is fitted by the factory we had to replace our crystals with a homemade retaining ring!

  12. Cool! I recently tried a blue Tudor Sub dial from Yuki, but its so fragile, you only need to glance at the time and all the paint falls off :black_eye:

Each time the dial and movement are removed, it leaves a ring of blue where the dial was touching the case! Fortunately it's the same shade of blue as Humbrol matt blue emamel paint. In contrast, the MBW dials are absolutely =@ proof.

I'm thinking of getting another Yuki, and this time applying a few coats of matt varnish. :g:

my yuki dial is very fragile i dropped my watch and it landed on the crown this caused the dial to chip along the edge about 1mm from 12 to 5 oclock this was mostly due to the sharp rehaunt, i was lucky that most of the chip was under the rehaunt and i found a match to the gloss black from one of my daughters nail varnish set! i dont think that this dial had any kind of etching primer applied, and the finish was applied direct, so i suggest anyone who has a refinished dial the do some sanding on the rehaunt to take away the sharpness, i would suggest applying a little drop of silicon sealer the (clear type) to the watch case and rehaunt lip, where dial edge sits and rests under the rehaunt, let it dry then fit the dial this should act as a shock aborber and offer some protection .

  13. "have you tried to fit the hands on, also?"

    rolex 1530/1560/1570 etc hands:

    hour...120

    minute...80

    second...20

    rolex 3035/3135:

    140

    95

    22

    Eta 2801/2824/36/46 etc:

    150

    90

    25

late tudor Eta uses same hands as Eta 2824 etc

    early tudor Eta 2451 etc:

    150

    90

    22

    Eta 2671 (lady size) etc:

    120

    70

    20

    So...

I doubt you can broach rolex 1530/1570 hour hands enough to fit the Eta hour wheel but the other two could be fitted with a little work. You might turn the Eta hour wheel hub down a little and broach the hour hand hole for the rest. I have not tried it though.

I have successfully fitted yuki tudor mercedes hands on to a 2836-2 a perfect fit!
