  1. Looking good T! (And good to see you man!)

Great case work, CGs look excellent.

What did you wind up going with for dial and hands?

I have a JKF COMEX SD on its way to me on some banana boat, somewhere. Hopefully it's JKF anyway. Was the dial spec 28.5mm? Where did you find the vintage bezel and was it a direct fit or need modding?

    Another headache...EV automobile fires.

No one would ever say for sure if an EV started this fire, but when a few EVs did catch on fire, the show was over.

    Except for the cartoon.

EV automobile manufacturers DO NOT like the term “battery fires.”  They are now called “THERMAL EVENTS” and  "thermal events" happen A WHOLE LOT MORE than we will ever know.

Remember the ship (Felicity Ace) full of high end cars...Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Lamborghini, Mercedes etc. that caught on fire?  An EV battery started the fire and all the cars (along with the ship) are now in the bottom of Atlantic Ocean near the Azores.
"Two weeks after catching fire, a mammoth ship that was transporting thousands of luxury cars sank on Tuesday morning about 253 miles off the Azores", according to the company that managed the vessel.
The ship, the Felicity Ace, went down at about 9 a.m. local time after tilting starboard, plunging about 4,000 cars —" including more than 1,000 Porsches and 200 Bentleys — into the sea."

(2-16-2022)  The Felicity Ace (656 feet-long, travelling from Emden, Germany en route to Davisville, Rhode Island) had been carrying nearly 4,000 vehicles primarily from the Volkswagen Group brands. A number of the vehicles were fully electric, including models from Volkswagen and Audi, making the fire more much more difficult to control.  One report stated there were 3828 cars on the ship.

*Fires involving lithium ion batteries are particularly difficult to extinguish.

*Loss for all the vehicles has been estimated at $400 million plus.

*Environmental groups had been deeply concerned that the ship would sink and about the pollution it would cause in the unique ecosystem of the Azores, the Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic, where the seabed is covered with coral reefs, coral forests and sponges.

*The Environmental impact of the ship’s total immersion in the water is not yet known...and never will be, it is 9,800 feet (3000M) deep.

Among the Lamborghini cars on the ship were some Aventador models. The V12-powered Aventador is Lamborghini’s most expensive regular production model, priced at over $400,000. Fewer than 800 are built each year and this is the last year the model is being offered. Lamborghini of America CEO Andrea Baldi recently told the industry publication Automotive News that it could be difficult to replace the cars because each one is highly customized and, as it is, customers wait months for their cars.

    April 6, 2022

It was a veritable "cartastrophy" when the Felicity Ace caught fire before ending on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. You've probably heard by now Lamborghini is forced to restart production of the Aventador to produce the Ultimae cars that were on board. In fact, the Volkswagen Group had quite a few high-end vehicles on the cargo ship, many of which were on their way to customers.

The Dutch side of Top Gear magazine has gotten a hold of the complete list of cars that perished on the Felicity Ace, and it's a doozy. Aside from the crop of brand-new Bentleys, Audis, Porsches, and Volkswagens, there were several privately owned cars. One that immediately caught our attention was a JDM-spec 1996 Honda Prelude SiR, allegedly the 65th car ever built.

Other interesting cars on the list include a 1977 Land Rover Santana, which was built in Spain under license from Land Rover by using complete knock-down kits. Also worth mentioning are a 2015 Ford Mustang GT, a 2018 Nissan Versa Note, MAN TGM truck, and a 2007 BMW 750i. There were also a dozen of Fendt tractors, a 2014 Kia Soul, and a single Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 listed separately because it was someone's car.

Speaking of personal vehicles, an Audi TT Roadster died together with the ship, as did a Q2, an E-Tron GT, a Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Jetta & Taigo, along with a Mini Countryman. It was truly a nightmare for the VW Group to lose so many cars as the list shows they took a big hit when the Felicity Ace went under. Here are some of the double and triple digit losses:

Make and Model Number of Cars
    Audi A5 Convertible 84
    Audi A5 Coupe 43
    Audi A5 Sportback 147
    Audi E-Tron 121
    Audi Q3 297
    Audi Q3 Sportback 144
    Bentley Bentayga 77
    Bentley Continental GT 38
    Bentley Continental GTC 50
    Bentley Flying Spur 25
    Lamborghini Aventador 15
    Lamborghini Huracan 20
    Lamborghini Urus 50
Porsche 23 made in Zuffenhausen, 19 in Leipzig, and 126 in Bratislava
    Volkswagen Caddy 47
    Volkswagen Golf 199
    Volkswagen ID.4 159
    Volkswagen T6 116

Oh my!! 35 lambos into the ocean hurts. And that rare prelude. That is one hell of a long list. So many cars!

  3. This is a nice thread, I like watching your little journey. You have definitely been bitten.

I think it's ok to leave those rolex hallmarks on rather than scuff your dials up. It's obvious you are doing this for yourself and not to brag or pretend you're something else to others. I have always enjoyed reps for just that purpose, me. They also were a doorway into a watchmaking career, starting out just like you have. I have tried to purchase the gens of the watches I liked as reps.. to varied levels of satisfaction. The worst part of gen ownership for me, was the service and support.  They sell you stories of perfection, but after the purchase when they should really shine they do anything but. I have had to do my own repairs after many service centers failed to meet their mark, including TAG, Breitling, and Rolex. RSC NY was the worst, followed closely by Breitling.  All of this reaffirms my commitment to being the type of watchmaker that fills the gap they leave in terms of attention to detail and turnaround time- their two biggest problems.

So what's next for you? I have recently decided to play around with a cartel comex SD which I have on the way. I was itching for a vintage project that wouldn't break the bank or need to be taken too seriously.

  4. Im so sorry for Bobs family first and foremost, and the forums enormous loss as well. Bob always talked about his family, and he had my deepest respect. Bob was an exceptional person, always kind and inclusive. He made me feel at home here.

I enjoyed going back and forth with him about where was more dangerous to live, Alaska VS Florida. There was always something really funny to be said there, guaranteed to crack us up. I'm sure he is already harassing the bears in heaven, or vice versa.

Seeing another one of the old school guard gone is truly heartbreaking and frankly, startling. Time waits for no man. I'm glad Bob kept track of his with a double red, he always raised the bar.

  5. Keep it up!

What's everyone been up to? Working hard here...

Just finished a Pam pxxxx clone repair... Next on the bench probably another sub of some sort...

Its weird to look back at how absolutely busy this forum used to be now Reddit looks to be taking over the forum game.

These last 15 years definitely feel like 30 on my mind body and soul. The past two years with the infighting over politics/elections and covid have been absolutely exhausting.

  6. It doesn't look bad. But that said I understand where you're coming from. All of the rep dials are too dark. Hell the latest BP vintage are a dark burnt orange.

After so many years of progress it seems like things took a huge step back. Can't even get a basic sub or vintage sub or any of the common pam models anymore.

Here's a thought... Order a white non patina version. By the time it arrives via 4PX it will be vintage and the month or two of shipping (for $35) inside a container ship at 200 degrees will provide for a perfect patina lume.

We won’t talk about my run-in with the huge brown bear yesterday. default_shock.gif

I took the dogs up the trail to do the hike around Mt. Baldy. Parked the Rover and we all got out, I locked it and we started uphill toward the trail and the dogs alerted, hackled up and took off up across the ditch just as a BIG brown bear stuck his head up and turned to look. He was maybe 20 yards away in deep grass and alders. I hollered HEY then STOP! and both dogs did! Color me amazed. They looked at me as the bear jumped up and started moving past me, right to left, maybe 15 yards away on a tangent. I called the dogs as I watched him and he came down across the ditch onto the trail just as the dogs got back to the Rover, I was between him and the dogs thinking “this is not good” then I opened the door and the dogs jumped in! I watched him as he walked down the trail like Big Booty Judy, then turned up into the trees again. Wow. Big bear.

I would DIE. This sounds like a weekly event for you. I'm glad you and the pups are safe.

You hit a moose in a rover?! Lol! I used to think Alaska would kill you before Florida kills me but I don't know.. the heat and the poisonous everything especially the Floridians themselves... I see those snow footprints and think what a relief it would be if those were teabag imprints from my boiled over balls.

Speaking of balls, anyone remember the thread  where prim and proper Josh was posting about how one of his balls hung lower then the other? Good times. 😂

  9. Hey BT. Good to see you're right side up. The nature of forums, people eventually move on but always wondered what happened to you since you were gone in the blink of an eye. Nice collection you've got there. A few noteworthy reps out there. Check out ARF stuff, notably the 43mm seadweller... And if you haven't heard- noob cloned the 4130 movement. I'd love to get one but $700 on a questionably made rep? Remember those old rules we all used to have... Only 5-10 in the box, never spend more than $300 on a rep, etc... How things have changed...
