  1. I originally set out to build a Tudor DayDate after being inspired by Jerkstores build-a-long frankenjust guides, But fell in the love with the 1016 after reading the many threads, especially LHOOQ and 1680's Vintage 1016 build projects. I was lucky enough to snatch up a Whoopy dial which is gorgeous by the way and the catalyst for this build. I won't say much more cause I'm a noob but would like to thank JMB and anyone else who helped my nooby PMs Feel free to make any suggestions for improvements. I couldn't wait for the bracelet to come so quickly made a leather strap to wear it before I ship her off to get lumed. Build details are below. - JMB V2 - with engravings - Whoopy 1016 Dial - JMB Hands (purchased TC Hands on M2M but still not here after 4weeks ) - Gen crown - Gen Spring bars - Mary Oyster 7836 bracelet on the way - Clark T21 - 2824-2 movement - endlinks (please recommend) - to complete the look anyone know where I can get an old Rolex box? Some Glamour shots
  2. First off, this is an extract from a blog presenting the Cartier version of the 1016 Explorer. For those of you willing to read the original article (the images state the name of the blog). Rolex Explorer Ref.1016 Cartier Today I would like to present a Rolex Explorer Ref.1016 with Cartier writing on the dial. Beautiful and quite rare piece. Enjoy it. ("I love the lenghts of those minute and second hands") And a little bonus from me, the HERMES Explorer 1016 dial: To be honest my favourite Explorer dial would be the clean dial. Nevertheless wanted to show a bit of variation.
  3. This is my first time to mod 1600 cases to 1016 specs. I must admit I did not believe it would look the part due to the significant difference of design of the lugs between the two models, but finally, it prooved to be possible. The lugs were shortened by 1/2 mm as the DJ has very sleek and pointed lugs when the 1016 has a different, more sporty shaped form of lugs. The lug holes were relocated higher and now appear equidistant from all edges. The lugs upper part was significantly lowered to have the surface appear larger. The crown side was shaved to create the distinct tonneau shape of the 1016, when 1600 have a triangular shape. Final touch was to erase the original reference number only, leaving all other engravings intact and refinishing the brushed finish overall! Now, with a nice "1016" properly engraved under the original REGISTERED DESIGN, these cases will rock!!! As for the casebacks, one was good to have its eges restaured, but the other was beyond salvage. I did a "US dealer" brushed finish that allowed to refinish all side edges nicely. Enjoy the pics !!!!
  4. Here is a new 1016, probably the only one combining this shape with a gasket groove..... And also the trickiest assignment I ever had as the case was hand modified before me getting involved and totally assymetrical !!!! Very hard to tune the machine. But well: end result isn't that bad at all.
  5. Here is my latest built for a fellow member: see the rear of the mid case !!!! I finally was able to get the proper tool to perfectly shape the lip where the back case meets the mid case !!!! First time ever I believe.... Specs : JMB base mid case and bezel, totally redone. Reshaped lugs on top to achieve the proper "drop", 30% metal removed on the sides, phony serial and ref removed, trimmed rehaut. RT caseback, Yuki dial, TC hands, Verlux T21, Genuine 600 crown and tube, rep sringbars with trimmed and polished tips to get a perfect fit. Enjoy !!!!!
  6. We have seen the Cartier, the Tiffany & Co. version, but personally the Hermes version has surprised me a bit. Still a very rare find:
  7. Hello from Mediterranean EU As currently here is as hot as it can get in a typical summer, wearing a watch with solid link bracelet is somehow not that comfortable as it should. Nor is the Explorer 1016 with solid link/folded link bracelet (in my mind) compatible with a sweaty wrist. So I tried a spare NATO strap I had for another watch, just out of curiosity on my MBW Explorer 1016 and here is the result: Watch: MBW Explorer 1016 ETA 2824-1 gen Spring bars- gen spec. "FASCI" Bracelet NATO 18mm The NATO strap was in my watch parts case for about a year. I had purchased it together with another colour combination in order to test which one would sit better on another vintage watch (heritage gen with 18mm lug width). So, I was tempted to try out the navy blue & yellow NATO on the Explorer and the result surprised me positively. I know the width of the strap should be 20mm but if you examine the current combination, a bit thinner NATO (18mm) is less dominant on the Explorer, allowing the case to "shine" more than the strap. If we speak about the experience of wearing the watch in the hot summer, the NATO strap allows the case to sit a bit higher on the wrist, so more air circulates around wrist and watch, further the weight of the 1016 is reduced for sure by 3/5. Personally, I think the Explorer 1016 is best worn with the solid link/folded link bracelet but a NATO strap brings in some diversity. As soon as the temperatures fall, the solid link bracelet will be back on the Explorer.
