What Do You Say When People Quiz You?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

New to the forum, so, Hey! :p

Just wanted to see what everyone says when someone asks about their watches. Are you completely open about the being fake/replicas, or do you just not comment?

There's a guy at my workplace who seems to be obsessed with the timepieces I wear, and constantly asks to hold them and stuff (I always say no...because I don't know him, and just feels a bit weird). He has a "Genuine" Rolex and Omega, I'm going to assume they are real as his family own a jewellers.

Anyway, what responses do you guys give? I feel like if I was open about them being reps...that people would automatically judge them for being cheapy knockoffs from down the market for a fiverr

Well i Think many buy a rep to show off to People there is a saying dress to impress but many here on rwg doesnt do it to impress People by looking like having a expensive watch but as many here can and do have gen watches or can afford Them but choose not to like myself i own more gens Then rep

But to your question if People ask me i will tell Them the truth but no one ever asked me probably because my father own a company who makes windmill parts and drive expensive cars and so on so They Always Think its Real bought for daddy money haha but im a pilot in the Danish airforce and it aint making me rich to tell it lighty and i drive a audi a6 but making some money on stocks etc.

But if a 20 year old driving a old toyota down to the 1 dollar store i Think all Would Think its fake its alot of looking like you could afford it but if you look like a guy who cant People will ask or just Think to Themselfs its fake

I take it off my wrist chuck it at them and say "what do you think"? they normally look and say "that's real"

I say "yep, a real ticking watch telling the time. No batteries in that sucker"

They hand it back and then comes one of 2 conversations around wow that's a bloody good fake or I built that, some of it's genuine...it's my hobby ;)

I'm always paranoid at people essentially 'looking down' on me. I own a Gen Rolex, but I cannot afford to have 20 different Genuine Swiss Watches which I adore and love, and that's the main reason I wear Reps. I just love looking at them. The majority of my reps just sit on my winder, with the very ocassional wear now and then

Somehow common sense must prevail so I avoid using 4 or 5 different $30.000 watches in places I go regularly. In my opinion it´s also no outright correct attitude yelling out in everybodies face: yeah, it´s a rep, look it´s a fake - if so I expect the other part to be somehow knowledgeable about it or well into watches, than enter an animated debate. Where I live Rolex and Omega, Breitling and Tag are easily recognized all the rest just falls under the "watch" "big watch" "black watch" "nice watch" category.

I've noticed that Rolex is definitely the main contender for most likely to spark up the "Is that real?" question.

Wear a Panerai, barely anyone even seems to know what it is.

Most I have ever gotten was a Rad Tech in the elevated saw my Noob 177n and asked if that was a Luminor, said he liked those, who makes those? Starts with a P...

So at least he realized it wasn't a Casio.....

People that I don't know usually get a smile and a nod in return to their inquires, but that's how it usually happens with most things in life. I live in a big city, we smile, nod, carry on with polite small talk then part ways and never see each other again.

I've always admitted up front they are reps, I'm not interested in pretending to be a player.  I've had more interesting conversations and made more friends by being honest than trying to lie about my watches.  Never know when you're going to come across another expert like us that calls you out.

Same here Mike, the folks around here are "watch illiterate" LOL. Very few could tell the difference between or care if it's a Rolex or a Timex! We have one nurse in the OR who comments on some of my watches, but she really doesn't know anything about watches, she just likes the ones that to her are a little different to what she sees around, otherwise, no one could give a hoot.i have never ever has anyone ask if any of my watches were "real".

jpz you live in Texas they ain't polite up here.

In general people are polite around here, but in Houston we get the big city bug and revert to small talk with strangers. In the outskirts of the city we do get much more polite depending on the suburb. Where I live we have a much smaller town feel but just outside my area is a big "richer than you" suburb that is full of snobs that wouldn't give you the smallest bit of help when in need...

I'd say it's about the same as everywhere else...

I haven't really socialised for ages apart from work where people know I'm into reps. As I have a few nice gens now its fun hearing their comments that this watch is a damn high quality rep and then I tell them its gen and their jaws hit the floor when in comes to cost :)

With Rolex around here, the standard "Is It Real?" question ALWAYS comes up for some reason.

The silly part is that no one will question your $20,000 Audemars Piguet or Officine Panerai 127 watch ... but wear a $5000 Submariner and  WHOA IS THAT REAL?!@?!?!?  Almost any grown adult can go out right now and put a Submariner on their credit card. It's dumb, really ....

Always a nice question.

Sometimes with some watches I get the same question: Is it real?

My response is always the same:

Me: "No of-course not, it is fake. A real one can cost even a couple of hundred."

Other: " A couple of hundred??? No even a couple of thousand??

Me: "Really,... that's just insane!!"
