Most difficult conversation in my life.

Cats

Recommended Posts

It is hard to read this thread and not get emotional.

Cats, you have been a respected, as well as respectful, member here as long as I can remember. We are all strangers but yet we seem to know each others humour, tastes and lifestyles. I know you have always been proud of your son. To read your posts about your illness have been both sad but inspiring to me. It certainly puts life into perspective.

As a devoted father of 2 young sons I can't imagine how difficult this time must be for you all. I'm genuinely gutted for you.

My thoughts and prayers go to you and your family. I hope that they will cherish every memory of your time together.

All the Best wishes to You and Your beloved ones. Keep strong, have faith, You are in my prayers.

SLOW DANCE

(Anonymous Author - Possibly written by a young woman with terminal cancer in a New York Hospital)

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?
You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask "How are you?"
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?
You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say "Hi"?
You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away.
Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.

gotta agree

my eldest gave me this card with his 4 year old footprints on it for Father's Day once

i've laminated and stuck it to my fridge

it's a poem about slowing down and letting him catch up

the idea being when he's a dad he will learn to do the same for his kids

i can't even begin to tell ya how much i love my boys

... i can't even begin to imagine what you're going through

but as someone who has dealt with the inevitable from time to time, the only advice i have for you is never, Never, NEVER stop fighting

Your composure and courage in the face of adversity has been an inspiration for years even before this news.

In as much as bad weather is on the horizon, I hope every single moment of sunshine is a wonder for you.  A wise man once told me that life is the ripple you make in the lake, and here we are around the world, learning from you.

My thoughts are with your entire family.  Take good care of yourself and them.  And then pull a rabbit from a hat.

This is an incredible community all the warmth , response on my post and PM's i got it's amazing.

I would like to answer everyone in person but please except my general big thanks in this post.

It's been an emotional week but also a week in which grew towards each other enormously. Next week i'm of to the hospital again and my son and sister will join me. My will have a meeting with psychologist who's a specialist in cooping with the situation of loosing a paren't when he/she is in it's puberty. A good sign is that the pain is getting less so my non medical conclusion is that the new chemo i'm taking is doing something. So let's hope it's indeed reducing the current growth and will push the finish further away from me.

Thanks again for all the good , warm , and friendly words.

I have not been a regular member here (spend most of my time at WUS and RG) but I came across this thread today. Even though I don't know Cats, I am truly saddened by this news and can't imagine the worry he's feeling for his son and family right now. We as men and fathers tend to not worry much about ourselves but more for those that love and depend on us. I know my biggest fear regarding something happening to me is what would become of my family.

Anyway, my family and I are dealing with a less dire but still very serious situation with my wife. She has received the absolute best of care and clinical trials at the cancer hospital at Ohio State University. If you are at all able, I suggest you reach out to the specialists at OSU to see if they have more options for you. I personally know lots of people who were given a poor prognosis by their local doctors but have experienced success at OSU. Not saying this will work for you and I don't know where you're being treated now, but maybe it's an option. Best of luck to you and your family and I hope everything turns out ok for you guys.

Edit: patients from all over the world come to OSU for treatment. I thought we were "not local", living 75 miles away - but we've met fellow patients from Singapore and Alaska!

Cats, for the many years here on the forum I always loved your profile picture, showing what a great dad you are and the connection as a father with your boy. And once again to see your thoughts, it proves so much what a gread dad you are. Great respect and so sad to hear this devastating news.

Wens jullie heel erg veel sterkte en kracht toe en geniet van alle momenten samen.

Wish you all a lot of strenght and enjoy all of your moments together.

Thanks again guys for all the warm words. Luckily I'm treated by the expert in the Netherlands on kidney cancer. I had some trials and most important I feel 300% confident that I'm at the right place in the university hospital of Radboud in Nijmegen. Pim is looking forward in meeting my oncologist and the psychologist next Wednesday. We both are enjoying the days we spent together. I feel that my condition is getting less but good timing of activities makes it manageable.

  • 4 weeks later...

After a rough period were I was found by my help in the housekeeping in a critical state I was rushed to the hospital on the 21st of October. After been treated for a severe pneumonia , liver metastasis and a problem with a too low fentanyl level I was back tho the living on the 25th of October. Last Thursday we had a meeting with my oncologist and after being lucky for more the 7 years in breaking a lot of record now a have picked a negative record out of the high head. Really ill cancer patients have a ldh level a 400 , I picked a level of 5000 a level she never saw in her practice. This means that I have to have fun as much as possible with my sun cause we are talking about weeks to go instead of months. I'm staying in a hospice cause I can't take care of my son anymore luckily it's 5 min away from my home so he can be he every day if he wants to.

I'm thinking of selling of lot of my reps in order to buy a decent gen to remember me as a gen father and not a Frankenstein father.

Cats - I am sadend by the latest turn of your health. I was lucky with my cancer in that I got an easy go of it and have been "cured" for the past 8 years! I can only wish that you have nothing but the most joyous memories to give your son in the coming weeks! I am off to give my two boys the biggest hug and warmest love in your honor!

Congrats on being cancer free! My wife is currently in the hospital fighting leukemia and my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer last week. It's just me and the kids at home lately...think I'll give them extra hugs in the morning.
