1600 to 1016.... The full mod !!!!

This is my first time to mod 1600 cases to 1016 specs. I must admit I did not believe it would look the part due to the significant difference of design of the lugs between the two models, but finally, it prooved to be possible.

The lugs were shortened by 1/2 mm as the DJ has very sleek and pointed lugs when the 1016 has a different, more sporty shaped form of lugs. The lug holes were relocated higher and now appear equidistant from all edges. The lugs upper part was significantly lowered to have the surface appear larger. The crown side was shaved to create the distinct tonneau shape of the 1016, when 1600 have a triangular shape. Final touch was to erase the original reference number only, leaving all other engravings intact and refinishing the brushed finish overall! Now, with a nice "1016" properly engraved under the original REGISTERED DESIGN, these cases will rock!!!

As for the casebacks, one was good to have its eges restaured, but the other was beyond salvage. I did a "US dealer" brushed finish that allowed to refinish all side edges nicely.

Enjoy the pics !!!!

Great job!  I never realized the 1601 lugs were longer, never had a gen 1016 case in hand to look at/measure... :(

Actually, it is more of an eye trick... When you place a bracelet endlink you can hardly see the difference. The 1600 is much slimmer and rather pointy. Shortening the lugs a bit creates a look very similar to the 1016 in my opinion. At least much closer than a 1600 unmodified.

Very nice work. How did you relocate the lug holes ?

Top notch work as usual! :)

The results are amazing.

In fact in my personal 1016 case studies I saw that the gen lugs (or corresponding lug holes) are in fact a tad longer. This is mostly noticed when a NATO or leather strap is placed in (not my photos).

Notice the flat angle of the NATO entering and exiting the lug area/spring bars.

On the leather strap picture there is quite a big gap between spring bar and mid case.

I would not place this detail high in the priority list. The endlinks fitting, upper, lower lug profiles, bottom case lip, sides are more important!

After all, the mods of JMB´s DJ cases and the gen 1600 are very credible and the best there is regarding 1016 cases.

The other option is to source a gen case.

Best of luck and joy (to the owner of the cases) assembling the "new" Explorers:) and don´t forget to share the end result with us.
