  1. I have a GMTIIc with an Asian 2836 WHS that is dead. I have a perfectly good Asian 2836 that I am going to install. I don't care if I have the GMT functional, but having the GMT hand visible would be nice. Is it possible to install the old gear that the hand attaches to under the face of the new movement? I am concerned that the other hands may not have clearance. Al
  2. I have a GMTII with an Asian 2836 IHS movement. I am going to attempt to reset the keyless works. I have searched but can't find out how to remove the dial. I have removed the hands. There are no screws in the side of the movement to loosen and lift off the dial like in one post I found. It appears there are 2 small pins attached to the dial that go into a plastic ring. Do I just gently pry the dial out? Is this dial attached by glue somehow? Can someone point me to a "how to do" with this problem? I found an excellent thread on fixing the keyless works. Al
  3. Good thing I haven't purchased anything yet! I am going to abandon this project.
  4. I have a Red Sub with a Swiss ETA that was purchased a couple of years ago from King. I wanted to replace the bezel insert. The bezel is not exactly to my liking either and I found a bezel and insert for a 1680 at Clark's on eBay. My question is how can I determine if that bezel will fit on my watch. Is there some way to measure it? I don't need one for a paper weight! The date window magnifier is centered but to far to the left. I am also going to replace the crystal with a Clark model. Maybe this will fix that situation. Regards, Al
  5. I have an older 1680 that was purchased from King a few years ago by someone else. I am toying with the idea of trying to do some simple mods to it. It has a Swiss ETA 2836-2 movement. I have tried to open the case with the "tape" method and have finally relented and am going to purchase an opening tool! I added a link to the bracelet and want to add another on the opposite side, but I have a link screw that refuses to budge. It appears someone else may have tried because the screw slot is damaged. The screw driver still has fairly good grip. If I can get it out it will have to be replaced. Also, is there a way to tell what factory origionally manufactured the watch? "Noob, etc." Regards, Al
  6. I was wondering what the best watch preparation and packaging would be for mailing a watch. Is there an accepted way to protect the bracelet, etc. Should the watch be stopped or not wound? Any information would be helpful. Regards, Al
  7. To late now. I am even starting to look at arms of people I don't even know!
  8. I received the "Budget Red Sub" today I purchased from Spinmaster (really great person to work with). I am amazed with the quality of the watch. I need to add a link to the bracelet. I have found some on Ebay that are supposedly are for that model. What would be the correct way to identify the right size and style. My wife and I were on a trip to Turkey last month. When we visited Ephasis, there were vendor booths with big banners saying "GENUINE FAKE ROLEX WATCHES". You can imagine the quality of that merchandise! I really have the "bug" now. I am already searching the ads for additional Rolex models for my new collection. Regards, Al
  9. Thanks for the information. I don't know how much I will do so I am going to start with the "good" small tools and a Dremel. Regards, Al
  10. I am a Noobie here. My first reason to join the forum was just to find a respected dealer to buy a watch from. After spending time in this forum, I now have the "bug" and want to try to work with watches instead of looking at them! I have been looking for a list of basic tools that are needed for performing disassembly and basic mods. Is there a list some where that I missed? Hope this question hasn't been asked 4,000,000 times before. Regards, Al
  11. Hello from San Diego. After deciding to replace a Datejust I had many years ago, I decided a replica would be the most practical choice. I am retired and seldom wear a watch. Looking at the purchasing options on the Internet I became really confused with models and the honesty of dealers. It was fortunate that I found this forum. It appears to be a friendly community with a storehouse of information. I am looking forward to being part of the community. Regards, Al
