    904L

There are alot of non-specifics, I am trying to get down to the nitty gritty of it really. On TZ a member had a few watches X Ray scanned for their material properties. A Z Series No-Date Sub had a bracelet made of 316, while a Milguass had a bracelet made of 904L. I think its safe to say on that basis that all Submariners have bracelets & clasps made of 316. Expected to change with the new release I assume.

    904L

Hey carl, is there an official source for this information?

    904L

Before I begin; this isnt your average 904L vs 316L thread where people give their personal accounts of what looks 'better'. As a non-gen owner I typically buy into the whole "904L looks like white gold man you should see it shine!", as a friend owns a gen 16610 I constantly stare at it thinking to myself whether its shining more or less than my own rep.. The interesting thing about this is the way we are often guaging the 'shininess' (just see any article comparing a Rolex to something like an Omega, or a rep/gen comparison) is from the look of the bracelet. However, recently I have read a number of articles that have led me to believe that only the Cases themselves (exclusive of Casebacks AND bracelets) are made of 904L, the latter being made of 316L. I would say that this applies particularly with the older models during the early period of 904L use, that they may have still been using 316L for bracelets and such. It isnt too difficult to imagine that the steel in a Rolex and Omega bracelet are of the same 'grade', yet sourced from different parts where Rolex may buy a brighter or whiter (not more expensive) looking material, or simply that Rolex's polishing and finishing goes to great lengths to perpetuate this whole 'Rolex shine' business. It is also possible that Rolex's latest models (The Deepsea and POSSIBLY the GMT IIc) have bracelets made of 904L though. So with all our forum members knowledge can we pull together some kind of consensus?
  4. [Video Game/Internet meme reference]: The cake is not a lie!
  5. So, how would the interest be in rep guns? I might start the production line! 1:1 AAAA+!!
  6. Could someone please tell a 'Brit' what possible reason there is to own an MP5? Some of those deer move quickly, do they?
  7. This was a really enjoyed read, I like how you left the best till last in terms of pictures and events. I also enjoyed how we came to understand the true reasons why you decided only the Gen was right for you. It seems RobbieG and yourself both came to this same conclusion on the same watch, I believe. Congratulations on your purchase, in my opinion you picked the best colour combination for the watch and I too prefer the PO on a Rubber/Leather than on the bracelet. I hadn't thought about why I preferred it until now, I think you really hit the nail on the head when you said it makes the watch head stand out rather than fade into the background. It's surprising to me how many 'cheapy' unbranded watches come with metal bracelets these days, I think its for this reason that the Sub is rarely recognised in the crowd. The only other thing I'd say if I wonder if you're able to get a nice leather strap for it too just for a change now and then, I mentioned Robbie earlier in the post, he owns a beautiful 42mm PO and has purchased a blue shark sirtoli strap which it looks equally great on! Enjoy your evenings staring at it through a loupe!

  9. Bold, bold statements! I kinda want to lay into this abit but yeah.. I'll just call you brave instead
  10. I cant believe theres a thread about the states where the negativity outweights the positivity about the country, you can tell theres a healthy EU membership to this board eh?
  11. Very cool! I did think that the CGs on 1 & 3 were too "thick", but I also thought on 2 and 4 looked slightly too thin, nicely shaped but looked modded that way. I think if both inserts were swapped for gens, I wouldnt know either way. However, my opinion is no where near as valuable as B-T's for example
  12. Pic number 2 & 4, but I will say actually for a GEN (if it is!) the insert looks hella sloppy on pics 1 & 3!
  13. I bet that YM in person is absolutely incredible. Never seen one (Not even in Switzerland!), the case shape is amazing.. Kinda has the lines of the Datejust but is then a sports watch.. Really nice.
  14. Unfortunately don't own either of these, but theres 2 cult watches I think are particularly prominent that everyone seems to give even a little 'nod' to: White Explorer II Also, 'Fat Lady' 16760 I think I'd have to give an honorable mention to the Milgauss also
  15. Hey bro, nice work and good photography! I think its generally accepted that the SFSO is one of the best out of the box and one of the most accurate reps of them all. I don't know whether you've done this on purpose as a twist on watch advertisements but you've actually set the time to 10 to 2 rather than 10 to 10 as is standard!
  16. This is incredible! You're a pilot? and if so - what the hell you doin taking pictures while you're coming into land?! Great pictures, I'm so jealous that you're able to just 'trip down to the carribean' when you like
  17. The whole idea of Rolex is that the piece is meant to have ultimate long-lastingness. They say themselves; they "created timepieces which are meant to be passed down generations." AR is yet just another one of those things that will spoil over time, I've always understood this as the reason they don't use it.
  18. It's a sad thing to fall out of love with a watch, but it is all part of this hobby and part of the bigger picture: narrowing down to the watches that 'really speak to you'. For me its the sub, my first rep. I guess I'll keep it for sentimental value for now, but there are a number of things about the piece in general that just don't speak to me. I think I've come to realise the only reason I would ever buy a gen sub is because of its iconography and relevance to the watch world in general. I have a wm9 LV on order, perhaps the less-understated green bezel and larger indices will make me like it more. We'll see... but for now - I'm on the hunt for a GEN white Explorer II. So yeah, thanks Lani. That aside, I'll wear it today;
  19. Look at the size of that vein! They pump oil through similar pipes! Watch is lookin awesome, this is actually an IWC dress watch that suits you It looks huge though, the lugs actually challenge your wrist size on this one lani, maybe you've met your match?! I guess it'd be impossible for them to rep the Portofino Vintage with the moonphase and stuff, movement issues? too bad..
  20. A gen black sub date dial for $100? hmm..
  21. Wishing you a swift recovery bro and good to have you back. On the up-side, at least you'll get a job for "SAW 11's" DVD Cover
  22. Yeah, they are dropping 904L and going back to 316 with its 'much darker appearance' apparently... ..of course, I'm just kidding! haha edit: Just to add, the appearance itself may look different in certain aspects due to the fact that the pictures in *this* format are usually computerised detailed models with simulated lighting. However, the brushing in previous pictures has been done as per the actual watches appearance (i.e. diagonal on the lugs). So it seems they have intentionally made the lugs appear vertically brushed. I'm not even sure if I like the look.. particularly since in GENS the brushed finish of the lugs is very noticable.
  23. Hey TJ, well picked up on about the brushed visibility. I also noticed that the brushed lugs on the SS case are no longer diagonal (as they are at the moment) strokes but vertical!
  24. Hi bro, its great that your testing this and letting everyone know what their own piece might stand up to although I'd advise against advertising that you have a rep friendly AD manager and saying which jewellers they are at! You never know who might be looking after all!
  25. Congrats Sam! To two more years of empty pocketed goodness!
