  1. Wow, small world... do you know the Meyer or the Kobek family farm at Sognefjord?

I've heard of them.. ..from you ;) (We have discussed this matter before, you and I)

..I do not know them, but I can imagine how beautiful a fjordside farm must be around those parts. I worked a summer on a passenger catamaran going from Fl

  2. man if i where in that boat/ship in that type of sea , i will poop in my pants like a 3 yearold kid  ..

p.s. then vh JUMP will be my friend !! do you have anything on the tube ? you playing keys .

Haha! My keyboard skills are limited to the guitar parts of Metallica songs ;) ..also some religious childrens songs I learned as a child.

  3. A lot of diversity! ..where are all gold-rolex-wearing used car salesmen? ;)

    I am a sailor.

I'm a ship's engineer on a fishing vessel, it's a 250 ft purse seiner/trawler plying its trade in and around the north sea.

Forget all your visions of dirty grease monkeys and soot angels.. I sit in a well lit control room with my feet up, surfing the web and looking at a few monitors.

It can get dirty (usually does), but it's very well paid and I love the ocean. :)

A thread with a few pics from my job:

    Pics from the sea

Oh.. and I am trying to get a small business going when I am at home. :)

  4. Damn, that's one hell of an awesome project :):good::good::good::good:

Beautiful house, breathtaking views, absolutely top notch :victory:

If I ever get the chance to work on such a project in the future, I'll be lucky :)

Thanks for the kind words, TJ :)

We built in the nick of time it seems, prices went up a lot here just after we signed the contract.. There is talk about our house costing 15-20% more if we had waited 3 months!

It's been rewarding building this, but I wont do it again. :p

  5. It looks fantastic - it's great to see the finished masterpiece!! And what a view!!

I'm on completely the same page with a great place to raise a family - I just made the same kind of move with that precise purpose in mind; it's the best thing we ever did. This is us until the gold watch now. :)

Maybe we'll need a home improvement, pre-school tantrum management or fishing sub-forum to keep you around over the summer! :p

    Thanks, CS :)

Yeah, moving out of the city is the best thing that's happened to us. I missed the sense of community and the serenity I had growing up on the island, and found some of it here.

It's a small spread-out town with new houses and young couples settling down.

Home improvement is likely to scare me away these days! I'm seriously fed up. ;)

    Cheers for summer though!

  6. It came out wonderful Ape. You should be proud of the accomplishment. I did the same with my house and know what a long road it is.

Enjoy it and don't be a stranger :thumbsupsmileyanim:

    Thanks, dluddy :)

I've fallen off the rep wagon, but I'll pop by now and then to see what's new, and follow the forum life. :)

I sold my apartment with a hefty profit actually, so now I am trying to convince my girlfriend what a sound investment a Breitling or a Panerai would be! ;)

  7. Very nice ideed Ape and that view........well it looks more like the kind of place people dream of retiring to.

    Ken

    Thanks again, Ken :)

It'll be a good place to raise a family and hopefully grow old.

Maybe build a wee boathouse on the water down there, sit with my feet up fishing all day.. :fishing1:

  8. Well then!

Here we are, moved in in mid february.. almost as planned.. Some work still left outside and on the ground floor side wings, but what we need is done. :)

I'm doing a little work when I am at home, but there's no real rush to complete it.

I don't frequent this great forum much anymore, lost a little interest in watches and spring is upon us with outdoors activities and all that..

We'll see when autumn comes.. :)

Here's a pic I shot tonight, trying to get a good shot of the facade, not easy as it's built on top of a slope.

Please ignore the slight barrel distortion from the panorama stitching. (7 pics put together into one)

Here's one of the 'sunset' the other night. Can't wait for late may when we can see the sun set in the sea off the left headland there.

  9. Thanks for your comments, you're making me feel all special ^_^

My boat is a bit larger than the boat in the clip, and taller above the waterline. It's no picnic going through what those guys are experiencing there, and I heard the whole crew was standing on the bridge looking worried, but as long as all hatches are closed and secure you're going to bob back up. (At least that's what they tell us)

That boat had 1700 tons of blue whiting on board, making it too heavy to ride the waves like it would have if it was lighter, that combined with the tidal races and wind in the Pentland makes for a wet passing. The older guys on my boat tell stories of boats going under, green water all they could see in the bridge windows, an eerie silence as the boat floated back to the surface, some coming through with seaweed on the roof of the bridge, and every other window smashed, boarded up as best they could.

We have dirty weather ahead too, with 40 knot stable winds blowing on the fishing grounds.

Like I said earlier in the thread, it's just a job after a while. You are aware of the dangers, but you'd go crazy if you focused on them all the time.

  10. I met with a financial planner and she told us that by the time my children are old enough to go to college, one in a private school like DePaul and the other in a public school like Northern Illinois I'll need 750,000 to send them. What middle to upper middle class family can afford that kind of hit. Which leads us to another dilemma, the middle class won't be able to educate which exacerbates the problem further separating the rich from the poor even more.

    Sean K

What does it cost now? And will the children not be taught things in cheaper schools?

The bright side? ..maybe the dollar will be deflated by then, and you'll be making $2,000,000 a year? :)

  11. Bumping is forum-language for posting an extra post so your topic goes to the top of the "new posts"-list. Some forums have a function where you go to your topic and click a button called "Bump" that does the same thing, only you don't have to make a new post for it to happen.

You often see people trying to sell a watch and not get any response in 24 hours posting a new post in his/her topic saying only 'Bump'. The BUMP-button does away with these one-word posts.

  12. Guess what? It was 1982 Camaro Barretta (sp?), if memory serves. Great muscle car.

Berlinetta the word you're looking for, Vic? ..or maybe you mean the more recent Chevrolet Beretta?

I don't know if this applies to US-imports, but importing a veteran car (older than 30 years) is tax-free between countries in the EU/EEC. You have to pay VAT for freight costs and whatnot though. (Don't take my word for this bit)

So you might be better off looking for a car in Europe.. Germany/Denmark/Sweden could be good places to look. I have seen a lot of old Camaros for sale in UK-magazines too. ..at least they are a lot cheaper there than in Norway.

  13. Ape, I just editted the Wiki definitions article. I used your definitions in part below. See if you wish to edit, to refine it. :)

    http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?autoco...ticle&id=83

OEM -- "Original Equipment Manufacturer": genuine article, not aftermarket or secondary brands

No, it looks better cut down like you edited it. I tried the 'noob'-approach ;)

Only thing that could be confusing is that OEM doesn't necessarily mean it's brand name. Might be nit-picking though..

    From Wikipedia:

"Original equipment manufacturer, or OEM, is a term that refers to containment-based re-branding, namely where one company uses a component of another company within its product, or sells the product of another company under its own brand. OEM refers to the company that originally manufactured the product."

  14. AR: Anti-Reflective.. Used for the anti-reflective coating on crystals. ..the blue tint you might see when the light hits the crystal at an angle.

OEM: Original Equipment Manufacturer ..basically means it's made by the guys who makes the genuine article, not necessarily the same guys who sell them under a brand name.

..about the Timewalker, I can't really tell you since I never tried one, but I assume you mean the 7750 version, and they are normally 'somewhat' reliable. There are always the horror stories, but if you take your precautions with them, as well as have it serviced, it's about as reliable as any cheap rep chrono movement.

  15. The draw is in:

    Celtic - Barcelona

    Lyon - Manchester Utd

    Schalke 04 - Porto

    Liverpool - Inter Milan

    Roma - Real Madrid

    Arsenal - AC Milan

    Olympiakos - Chelsea

    Fenerbahce - Sevilla

Tough but managable draw for Arsenal. Milan's #11 in Italy now, 22 points behind Inter. ..struggling a little, but with 3 or 4 games less played than the others.

Liverpool's meeting a steaming Inter, they're doing very well in Serie A so far.. But the scousers aren't known for being an easy opponent in the CL..

Chelsea should be fairly happy with the greeks. Celtic up against Barcelona, ..people will expect Los Azulgrana to come out on top. ;)

All fun when the league starts again in february. :)
