Wow...and I thought skateboards were cool back when I was that age...

Like minds think alike... I own few 'Palp' crowns from '06 on which I used 2000 grit sandpaper to reduce the sharpness of the teeth as they were so sharp every time I'd wind the watch some bits off skin from my thumb and forefinger would be 'stripped' off and lodged between the teeth...I know it sounds strange but that's what used to happen to me (or I should start developing a thicker skin, ha, ha). Then I'd apply the Cape Cod cloth polish to smooth the brushed effect and introduce that used crown feel and look. I'll get my T48 crowns in few days, will be able to say a little more about the fit and finish then cheers, babola

Not sure we're talking about the same thing here. When I say beveled I mean the slight tendency towards the conical shape of crown towards the CG. You can see this quite clearly in the pics posted above. I didn't mean the edge bevel on the teeth. All gen crowns used on mech Pams pre G-series are the same, no difference in bevel (cut) or teeth number. When I say that I mean Vendome era ones, Pre-V crowns were slightly different, but only so slightly, and G-series introduced a crown with teeth that have lower pitch and smaller angle between the top and the base of a teeth. If you noticed any different look or shape on pre-A, A and B series, that's most likely due to polishing effect at the top of the teeth as well as edges, normal wear and tear being the likely factor. I believe the 'bewelling' effect in pictures above is mostly caused by angle of photo shooting, at least I'm hoping they are. babola

It depends greatly on how loose or tight the caseback is screwed on, as well as the caseback material and it's thickness. The 111H with a mineral glass caseback will emit louder tick sounds compared with the one with sapphire, similar could be said for the front glass. Also, thinner solid casebacks like DSN ones, will make mov't ticking sound appear louder than standard rep ones, for example. That's what I learned from my personal experience with Pam reps, views of others may differ. babola

Could you please post a macro of the T48 crown. If what you say is true, it's quite disconcerting for a person like myself, currently awaiting delivery of three T48 crowns. I hope it's only an angle of the pictures were taken, please tell me I'm right...

Sure it isn't, unless a dealer has been telling me porkies...it may well be an Asian 23J GMT version, but he's unsure. Which mov't part(s) exactly?

Great one K, very well executed. PAM023 dials are so rare I'm really perplexed how did you actually managed to score one - awesome! @HA...as for the hands, it's just an optical illision, they're just fine and same as on T-dial 29. L-dial 29 introduced slightly longer L-hands because the dial markers got pushed more towards the bezel. K, is it me or are the 12 & 24 bezel engravings slightly off? Must be an optical illusion as well, surely. Wear it well! babola

Sausage dial PAM001 or 111 up to the H-series are my favourite 'hystorics', a quintessential model. Love it!
-
Asian auto 21J mov't, plates are just for decoration, no multi-barrel functionality on this one.
-
Very nice find that early PAM040 Davidsen T-dial, jitai...great "Tritium" lume as well. Did you manage to remove the dashes in T-SWISS-T by yourself? Wear it in good health! cheers mate, babola

Agree, paying $4.5 for a gen watch like PAM111 for example is one of the biggest cons in gen WIS world, anyway. I love Pams, but they've been riding this artificial hype & popularity wave for too long IMO, let's just say, time will tell.

Couldn't have said it better myself...

...and here I could go on and say...'You just wouldn't believe me would 'ya!' LOL!

New pics of my gen Fiddy, gen 005J and gen 024I

Difference is still there, but once you get your ducks in the row, it actually isn't that big. The major difference exist between the factory produced Pam rep and the gen, no doubt about that. Add a bit of TLC, know-how, patience and sweat, and you'll be extremely close, for still a major gap between price of a gen and fully modded rep or franken. And of course, do not show "them" a rep mov't, we all know that by now. I may spend and extra $4K to get a better car, motorcycle or hi-ticket household item, but spending it on a manual wind gen watch that only marginaly looks and feels better than a fully moded $500-600 rep...that I won't. BTW, I feel much more fulfilled and rewarded after the long term ultimate rep project comes to an end and all comes out as you'd expected. Gen is a gen, and will always be, with all the attention to detail during manufacturing of parts and assembly and well known Swiss QC, it will be hard to match by any rep manufacturer, being Chinese, Japanese or any other. cheers, babola -
Very much so, otherwiase the 'sandwich' can end up being to thick for the proper install of the hand-stack. The second hand requires enough clearance so it doesn't brush against the subdial, hour hand again shouldn't touch the second hand etc...all this gets affected if a sandwich dial isn't of correct thickness.

what is current state of art in rep 1950/217's

To add to what archibald said, problem with rep Fiddy xtals is that they're made by diferent factories, some are thicker than others, some have flat underside some concave. This fact alone will influence the infamous Fiddy xtal "break point" position and intensity, majorly affecting the correct distorsion required. If you're lucky to have one of those early EddieLee Fiddys then you can consider yourself lucky. Those xtals had smaller amount of pinkish/blue A/R hue applied, almost unoticeable under most lighting coditions, as well as 'correct' distorsion break point, not too close to the bezel (making numerals and indices look smaller, squashed and squeezed towards the centre), not too far towards the centre of the dial (artificially enlarging the numerals and making them look pushed out towards the bezel). Well modded EL Fiddy would be extremely hard to point out as rep, even by the pickiest gen 127 owners, unless they're wearing their one on the wrist at that moment or ask you to flip it over -
Very gen-like, love it !

Good one, mate. Hope you scrapped the old factory lume off before applying the new SL to the under disc. Do I see an old school Eddie Lee 44mm case with no cutout between the lugs and the plastic mov't retaining ring? Great find, short of JimmyFu case that's as good as they get in the 44mm Pam rep world, IMO. Don't forget to show us the pics of the assembled piece. cheers!

Yeah, the first time I saw that on Andrew's Web site it made me almost vomiyt in my mouth...insane rediculous pricing for what you actualy get. For a moment I thought I clicked on a Hublot Big Bang rep link...LOL! Scoobs, great comparo, love the posts like these. The old cartel dial was made by a diferent more 'mainstream' Pam rep factory that ceased production of numerous Pam models, since. The new 088 comes from another factory that now also makes the "ultimate" 104, 164, 111E etc. There's just something odd looking about these new reps, I just can't put my finger on it. Not the standard 'Davidsen odd-looking' but still odd, IMO.

...just noticed that The Zigmeister had since removed a link to the 'Hybrid 6497-1' review I mentioned above in my post. Here's the link to another topic started as a parallel discussion back then: http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?showto...t=0&start=0 cheers, babola

This is the infamous Asia/Swiss Hybrid 6497-1 mov't that originated in late '06. It's also being reffered to as "Swasian" or "Chiss" by some members, depending on which forums they belong and what terminology they use to describe it. It's not bad, but "Swiss" it aint. It's a very well finished Asian with some Swiss parts like base plate and few parts of the drivetrain. The Zigmeister has reviewed it before in detail. Check his section for an in-depth overview. Probably not bad for that price but the bridges finish has moved on since, it's much smoother and engraved with more detail.

I'll try... - gen dial with original tritium - rep hands relumed in Tritium shade lighter - rep case/bezel (bezel dot lumed in lighter T to match the hands) - gen crown - rep CG, likely JFZu lemme know how far/close am I...

PAM GMT upgrades, Lume and CG lever pin fix.

Great to know we have a spare parts manufacturer in our midst to fall back on when they become unavailable...only joking! ;-) Excellent result, as always!
