  1. I've been away on vacation and missed this post until now. Wow, the watch looks superb, and the dial is gorgeous. Where did you find such a fine example freddy? Wear in good health!
  2. Great job T! The watch looks fantastic You certainly did get lucky finding the gen movement and bracelet so inexpensive. Bracelets usually go for 600+, and movements about a grand You'll have to wear this one during the next GTG. I'd love to see it up close
  3. Looks great on there! Congrats on another successful project
  4. The balance spokes look like that of an asian. Maybe someone else can confirm?
  5. you guys are nuts is there a watch-a-holics meeting coming up soon??? Hello, my name is JJ...
  6. PS: 571 endlinks are going for 450 to 500 USD (if you're lucky enough to find them, and at that price, you're better off finding a gen 6263 to put them on )
  7. All the gen prices quoted so far are wayyyy too low. Unless you're buying some beat up crap, you'll never find prices for good gen parts so cheap. For instance (no offense), 702 crown/tubes are no way near 200. Although molarrycurly (sp?) was selling crowns for 70 or so, 702 tubes may go for 500 just for the tube (if you can ever find one).
  8. I just tried to check. I can't get the bracelet off, but I was able to get the case back off with some duct tape. It says Shitinerand on it. Does that mean it's a fake???
  9. Looks great Marty, but shouldn't the endinks be 571's?
  10. I thinks dluddy has one of those.. mwahhahhaa
  11. I agree that the newer ones are too much polish. Like most of rolex, the daytona got away from the basic (although expensive, even back then) tool watch.
  12. Hey James, Welcome aboard! From someone who has been down the road you're considering, here's my humble advice: Reps are great fun, and building them is a creative road to learning much more about the watches you own than most folks out there who will just go and buy a watch off the shelf. If you're considering Comex or DRSD, Big Crown was selling a terrific looking modded gen dial with Comex. Other than that, you'll never find a better one unless it's attached to a 100k watch. Decent rep DRSD dials are out there, but they are few and far between. I've got one on a singer blank that I was going to install into a super franken, but have since changed my mind because I am concentrating on gens. I plan on selling it soon, along with a lot of my other parts (both gen and rep) from projects that were waiting to be built. 100% gen DRSD dials are practically non-existent, but if found are way out of reach financially, and (IMO) certainly wouldn't make sense installing into a fake watch. Good luck with your projects JJ
  13. Wishing you the best Lani. Maybe all that sunshine is no good. I bet if you headed north far enough, nanuk could get one of those big eskimo girls to give you a hot oil rubdown and fix you right up! Cheers, and get well soon, JJ
  14. Thank you to all who responded. If it weren't for my friends here at RWG, I never would have learned what I have, and would probably still be wearing canal st reps! To me, this watch is certainly a pinnacle, and the find of a lifetime. The watchmaker at the shop I bought it from was kind enough to remove the caseback while I was there. What I found underneath was jewel-like, and absolutely beautiful. Thanks again to all who wished me well with it. I'm wearing it now, and still can't believe I have such a masterpiece on my wrist
  15. I'm sure many of you here remember when I first arrived (on RWG1). Although I had plenty of interest in vintage rolex, I had very little knowledge of the subject. After years of research here, on other boards, in books, and my visits to vintage dealers in the city, my knowledge slowly grew. However, it wasn't until I met members here at a GTG that my interest truly sparked. I can remember very clearly holding a gen grail 5508 in my hands, and wondering in amazement how much it must be worth. At that point, I knew that my rep days were slowly drawing to a close, and my quest for gens had begun. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to acquire several gens that are grails in their own right. I've even been lucky enough to buy one of them from one of our very own trusted members. After having some bad luck piecing together a franken (which is still on the drawing boards), I decided that nothing can possibly beat the real thing, so.... A watch that only two years ago was so far out of reach it was beyond consideration, today became one of my very own collection... It's a five and a half mil gen 6263 in unmolested, un-polished, and original condition. An original "large daytona" dial Original trip-lock and pushers
  16. It's actually kinda cool: Day, date, and GMT all wrapped up into one!
  17. Hi Mike, It sounds to me like you're planning on building a franken by upgrading with gen parts. If that's the case, I would recommend searching the for-sale section, and try to find an old style MBW for sale. I know they're out there; in fact, I just sold off the last few remaining NOS MBW's I had about a month ago. Cheers, JJ
  18. Hi TeeJay, You're quite right, the 5513 pictured has an HEV. Helium escape valves were first developed and incorporated into 5513's (later 5514's), and finally into the sea-dweller. IMO, it's a shame the HEV never made its way back into the basic no-date sub. These early subs worked well in real-world saturation diving, and IMO, the depth ratings that the sea dwellers became certified for moved beyond the practical, and only became a marketing ploy for for diver wanna-be's...
  19. Thanks everyone, L and I had a terrific time. It was just a perfect night in NYC Sorry coolfire, no magnetism nearby last night; however, with the US Navy so close by, I thought a Comex no-date was more in order
  20. Took some pics of three of my favorites last night, all no-date 5513's The three together, a gilt meters first, a meters first, and a later model feet first: Another shot of the three together: Here is the latest addition, an "R" series plastic: Three sets of cg's and crowns: The old and the new: ..and finally, the two older brothers side by side:
