  1. Maybe it is real? What is the problem? I don't think every watch sold on Ebay is a fake but there might be a lot.

i own the same watch. the datewheel font is off, the crown looks dodgy, and the lug screws are too coutnersunk to be genuine. definately fake.

  2. i work in a starbucks in waikiki (don't be too critical, i'm in college), and the other morning i opened the store at 5:30AM. the first customer to enter was wearing something massive on his wrist, a genuine PAM024. he noticed my watch and said "that's a nice looking watch, see." and held his wrist out. i placed my custom built 001 (jimmyzfu case and guard, davidsen crown, crystal and hands, josh's b series caseback and dial, and a genuine ETA 6497-2 i bought on the bay for 70 bucks). he said "wow, great watches aren't they?" then i replied, "sure, but your's is genuine." he told me that before he bought his genuing that he experimented with reps, and that the difference between the genuine article and the replicas is negligible. i told him about my custom built 001 with genuine strap and how it cost me under 600 for parts and labour. at that point the woman with him shrieked "a 600 dollar fake?!" in disbeleif. i got a little defensive and told her i built it myself from the same high quality parts. at that point i handed him my watch and he showed them both to his lady friend and she said she couln't tell the difference. then he handed me his genuine 024 and allowed me to play with the crown guard. the action wasn't much smoother than our replicas, and certainly less smooth than jimmy's guard with bushing. the springiness of the crown was very subtle. the overall feel was not very impressive, and after finally handling a genuine, i am glad i haven't purchased a one (though i very well could--i own my 18,000 dollar car). but anyway i flattered him and said i should get myself a genuine one of these days. he then tells me that they are an old italian navy watch, to which i replied "yes i know, i am a big fan."

  3. i bought a jimmy fu case and bezel set and my watchmaker calls me tonight to say they do not fit together, and that the gasket is too thick. i told him that i bought these pieces together, and that jimmy told me that they should snap together with a press. is this true? perhaps there is some technique, or special sequence to fit them together properly? he sounded somewhat annoyed with me when i told him they should fit since they came together, and that the seller told me that you must use a press in the process... can anyone help?

    thanks mates!

  4. i recently purchased a panny case and bezel from jimmyfzu to go with his crown guard and a davidsen crown & tube (which fit perfectly, crown flush against case). i am at a loss however as to how to attatch the bezel. there is a plastic ring which i assume sits between the bezel and case. anyone know the best method to put this together? if not, i'll just email jimmy i suppose. any pointers guys? thanks.

  5. i just received my two crowns from davidsen -- one for a 6497, and one for a 28**. they look superb! thicker than our standard issue crowns and slightly smaller ridges. and and to top it off, the 6497 is spring loaded!

i have not yet mounted it however, since my 001 is at the smiths facing a movement transplant. i won a genuine eta 6497-2 on ebay a while back and i'm having the longer pinion taken out of a cn 6497 i also won on the bay.

i also have an assembled jimmyfu crown guard. i did not use the supplied gasket, since i felt it made the lever too stiff. instead i made a slimmer gasket out of a couple layers or electrical tape, which leaves the lever perfectly smooth.

on the way i have a jimmy case and bezel, davidsen crystal with AR, and the 111 hands for longer pinion. when this project is complete, i will have the perfect 001.

will post pics of david's crowns later this evening. they are so great! i am sooooo excited to try it out!

  6. a pic of syd circa '67 was my old avatar on RWG I.

Syd i hardly knew thee, only for the past 4 years.

i discovered his brilliance when i was age 20, and his music immediately reminded me of "art brut"--raw, spontaneous, insouciant, largely dionysian.

those who don't get syd and prefer the commercial floyd stuff are simply swayed by the reified musical template provided by mass culture, which says "good," "cultured," and "tasteful' must abide by democratically derived or pre-approved standards.

even though i only discovered the band posthumously, i can recognize that syd's music was highly deconstructivist. Later floyd stuff seemed too formulaic. Sounds like they were at first trying to imitate Barrett, but unsuccessfully. The beauty of Syd's music was in its absence of ideology. closeminded individuals who live in a sythetic "reality" beleive in apriori aesthetic absolutes and syd's music deliberately subverted these kinds of criteria. Psychadelic rock is one of the most underrated, trivialized, and misunderstood movements of modern art.

  7. i thought this was resolved already: the eta movements are not fake but ordered loose pack and simply assembled in asia. i don't think the chinese have gone so far as to imitate the eta logo... look at the cn 6497 and 7750 -- no eta logo there. i believe that if they really did duplicate the 2892 movement they would be up front about it.

those who make disparaging remarks about our reps not really having swiss movements are only referring to the assembly.

  8. hey, i recently scored what is purportedly an OEM panerai box from a friend who owns a pawn shop. he got it from a friend who worked at the local AD before they closed down along with many other goodies including stands and booklets. he didn't know what model it was from so i thought maybe some of you might be able to let me know. he gave me the box for free, and i am curious to know what series it is. i have read the earlier series boxes are supposed to be lighter in color. also there are no "fasteners(?)" to hold any extra strap/screwdriver down, so i was thinking that maybe this came from a 40 mm model. i hope somebody here knows their OEM box history!! thanks in advance friends.
