  1. I'm looking for a classy, elegant, simple watch that will hold up to inspection from mid-range.

Currently, I'm in love with the Patek Calatravas but there doesn't seem to be a really solid rep (please, correct me if I'm wrong), but also really like this Omega Deville - but again, I'm not sure on the quality.

If that weren't enough, I've got relatively small wrists, so would really prefer something sub 40mm.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Cheers!

  2. So watched Drive last week and *loved* it. The main character has a Patek Philippe that after some digging looks like it was a fake fabricated for the film. There were a few made and sold as props, but I didn't manage to get hold of any (not that expensive considering the face says Patek, and it was a prop from a movie, guess they were cheap innards - the other watch from the film - a Breitling - is listed as $250).

Looks like a really minimalistic Calavatra. Anyone have any ideas if it is a real production model, if not are there any similar watches out there?

Edit: Jeez I'm a muppet. Was searching the forums for "drive" and obviously I was sifting through a tonne of unrelated stuff.

Just found this post after searching for "Gosling". Shame, doesn't look like it's real or repped. Any similar watches from other brands out there?

  3. a 10atm machine is an expencive bit of kit, i can do to 6atm and for 30m i would want a watch tested AT LEAST to 10ATM

Cool, (slight thread derail) I'm thinking about swapping my asian ETA out in my PO for an ETA and getting some gen hands on there, sometime after the holiday. You did a great job first time round, think you could swap them out and waterproof the watch to 6atm?

Not to rain on your parade, but before you get an Open Water dive qualification you would be lucky if you got down more than 10 meters. 18 meters is the absolute maximum distance allowed with a PADI certification. Even dive instructors don't go down much past 25-30m for safety reasons, because it takes AGES to slowly resurface, otherwise you'll get the bends ;)

For diving, do what divers do and get yourself a Seiko Monster. It won't matter, you'll have a dive computer anyway, watches during diving are just for fun for us watch-lovers :)

Awwh bugger! I know one of the dive spots literally had a shipwreck at 28ish meters, was really looking forward to it. I'll be doing my PADI out there :)

The monster is a nice looking dive watch, but I have my heart set on a Sinn before I knew I was going to be diving. Two birds, and all that..

5ATM testing will be fine for recreational diving. Don't believe the hype. Having said that I waterproof my own watches and I'm fine diving with them at 50ft. Below that I use either my Omegas and Tags.

    Thanks for the advice :)

As TX said 5ATM, is plenty. The WR rating has less to do with depth and more to do with dynamic pressure on the watch as pressure testers measure static. In simple terms, put a watch down to a depth where it sees 3ATM (static) and move it around at a given constant and you will increase the dynamic pressure greater then 3ATM.

If you really have your heart set on testing to 10ATM, I have a machine that will do it...and more.

Well, hello! I've been thinking about a pvd Sinn, just love the look of them. I have a feeling that they're going to be waterproofable to a decent depth, so I might hit you up just to be sure ;)

How much would your services cost?

  4. Hey, I'm going diving for the first time in a few months, and I was thinking about getting a Sinn watch to take underwater with me whilst I search for sunken pirate booty.

I know that most water-resistance testing machines only go up to 3 or 5ATM. I'd probably only be going down 30m max, but figured I'd need to get it tested for well above that rating.

In theory the U1000, for example, can be safely used at 1000m below sea level (and was apparently tested at that depth), and considering the reps are made with gen like construction, do I have it right in saying that with all the necessary tweaks they should survive 10 or even 25% of that?

If yes, who can waterproof a watch for that type of resistance, and can they test it to 10ATM?

    Cheers!

  5. I went ahead with the project, kinda-sorta. Replaced the dial with a vintage NDT rose jobbie, and tried bleaching the bezel but it's now a really, really light blue!

Recently I've been wearing it a lot and came round to the light blue bezel, and actually I love it and have kept it as-is.

I've still got a massive Tudor-boner though, so I'm thinking about a snowflake or the black counterpart to what woof's got going on. Once again stuck trying to find a decent dial...

Edit: Just seen wiesn089's posts. Damn looks like I was beaten to the punch :(

  6. It's not been long since I've had my 5th gen PO, but damn, I want this puppy so bad.

Watcheden has it though it's not even close to the gen. WE's has no see-through case back, has no AR, and the bezel's not the right colour.

Does anyone know anything about this getting repped properly?

  7. Hey, was just playing around with my 5512's spacer ring (the one underneath the bezel), and I've found a way to create a tighter fit, and have it work similarly to the thicker ones a few guys here have bought i.e. where it's much harder to spin the bezel, and works best when you apply some downwards pressure to it. I feel like a bit of an idiot posting something this simple, but I haven't seen it mentioned and I did a quick search but found nothing - with the influx of those buying the older rollies I figured it might help a few people.

It's nothing hi-tech, doesn't need any tools, and takes about 30-seconds.

All that needs doing is bending the spacer ring in a few places. I found one crimp wasn't enough for me and the increased resistance in turning it was asymmetrical, two (at 12 and 6) had the same problem, but 3 (at 12, 4, and 8.) worked well. Then I went a bit overboard with 4, but corrected it nicely by smoothing out the bends.

It works *really* nicely, the bezel's a little hard to turn without any downward pressure, but not impossible by any stretch, and with just a bit of pressure spins nicely. The height of the bends can be changed to alter the resistance etc. Here's the pic:

  8. That was beautiful, Nanuq. Beautiful. clapping.gif I'll take heed!

The feet on the dial are at 25 and 55 minutes - I'm guessing that's for an ETA movement?

I just emailed Yuki to ask what size dial his Tudor sub cases take, and it would probably fit, but it would be $450! Crikey.

Do MBW do Tudor cases, or would it be a case of picking the Rolex equivalent?

  9. Okay, cool. I'm going to give it a pop.

Boy, do those end links look like crap though!

Edit: Quick question to JMB before I hit buy, how much (for want of a better word) "overhang" is there on the dial - i.e. if I took a mm off, would I still be able to throw it in a jumbo case if I got the chance?

  10. I don't know if a DJ II takes a bigger dial or not, I don't have one to check... It would be larger than the Jumbo but it has possibilities if the dial would fit.

I know what you mean about cheap, I thought I had stolen these dials (4 for $75) until I started trying to find a case...

Tell me about it! Spotted it on the bay at $6, thought it would be worth a punt at a silly price since it wasn't what I was looking for. The black rose dials were going for hundreds, so I never thought I'd win it.

    I guess everyone else knew...brow.gif

Your dial's a beaut, and that watch is great!

    @TeeJay

I might just take you up on that.

I don't have the dial in my hands yet, but if somebody would be able to do a quick check and measure the room available for the dial, the size of their dial, and from one side of the rehaut to the other, I'd have a pretty good picture of whether it would fit or not.

  11. That could actually be a dealbreaker. Non-waterproofness kills me. My Getat took on condensation after washing my hands ONCE (Tat was kind enough to replace it and get it rated to a decent depth for me) but that was beyond frustrating.

    Did you try waterproofing it?

@JWB - Bugger! Is there Rolex equivalent case I can look into buying?

I'll keep my eyes peeled but this sounds rather ominous.. Should've known the dial was cheap for a reason dry.gif

  12. Having the Tudor dial fitted, is another reason you'll be less likely to get called out, as no-one recognizes that name, but everyone knows that Rolex = Fake :victory:

    Ha, here here.

That's a good looking watch - I'm not sure if I like the fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet on most DJ's. I'm about to pull the trigger on this watch: http://www.cqout.com...asp?id=10993977

Could someone stop me if they notice anything off about it - cheers! thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

Edit: The end links and SEL's look horrible. I'll likely put it on a leather strap anyways.

  13. Wow, they're much cheaper than I expected. I'm a massive Rolex newb - it was vintage Tudors that plunged me into these deep replica depths - so how's the quality? Does it compare with the cartel versions? It's not like I'd be going out of my way to convince people it's a genuine, but don't want to be called out from across the room either rolleyes.gif

  14. I like the way you think TeeJay.

Are we talking DJ men's or oversize?

Also, are there any A21J DJ's available? Going ahead, I'd probably change the crystal (Clarkes?) and would definitely sand down the rehaut - neither of which I've done before, so cheaper would be better incase I really screw anything up - I can always upgrade the movement later on once I'm more comfortable with modding watches..
