  1. I've bought a couple of those. Two subs (one blue and one red) and a lady's Datejust for my wife. The DJ had to be returned since the cyclops was misaligned and I've had to buy a new red sub, because of my own stupidity (took it apart without the proper instruments, and broke the second hand). The blue sub is now my daily beater. It works great and if you can accept the misalignment of the rehaut engraving, too little magnification of the cyclops, that the blue is too purple (which I like, btw) and all the other minor errors, it's a great watch. I enjoy wearing it very much.

The subs are only $29.99 each, which make them a real bargain. Plus Michelle (who works there) is great to deal with.

  2. So, the Lady's DateJust has arrived in Chine, and Michelle has taken notice of the cyclops problem. That's good.

I changed the cyclops for one from Esslinger. See if you can spot the difference...

    Before:

    post-40195-0-49566800-1322208853.jpg

    After:

    post-40195-0-06628800-1322208861.jpg

That's right. Virtually no difference at all...

Perhaps the Esslinger cyclops doesn't have correct magnification after all. :g:

Well, looks like I have to search elsewhere.

  3. The upside of having an empty case to play with is that I have now submerged the crystal in chemically pure gasoline to dissolve the cyclops adhesive.

If all goes well, I'll install that crystal in the blue sub and attach a cyclops from Esslinger, which would give me correct magnification of the date.

And no, I won't do anything to the movement.

  4. First I was like :hammer:

And then I was like

Well, goes to show what happens when you lack skill as well as proper tools.

I thought I'd be really clever and realign the datewheel on the red sub. Now the red sub is gone.

Since I didn't have the right tools, it turned out that I broke the second hand when trying to remove it.

So... I tried to glue it back. :fool:

That worked. For a while. Until the second hand got stuck in the minute hand.

Then it all just went wrong.

I tried again, but used too much glue, so the second and minute hands were stuck together.

Then, when trying to remove some of the excess glue with a needle, I naturally scratched the dial.

That's when I gave up and tossed the hands, dial and movement. So now I've got this great looking sub case with red bezel and nothing in it.

  5. Hi,

Does anybody here have any experience with the Midsize Submariner from Timesshop?

    http://www.timesshop...id_product=6614

My son (8yo) is absolutely crazy about my sub reps, so I thought I might get him one of his own. I know there's no gen version of it, but I think it would look really cool on his wrist, even though he's a small kid for his age.

    Anyone?

Edit: Here's a ladies version, that might fit him even better.

    http://www.timesshop.net/product.php?id_product=2045

  6. Thanks to Ken who kindly removed my attached image, portraying the customs declaration. Won't happen again. :)

Sooo... Being slightly annoyed with the lack of date magnification, I decided to take the leap and become a modder.

I found this - http://www.esslinger...magnifiers.aspx - and swiftly ordered five of them. 7x5.5mm seems about right, so that's what I've ordered.

Let's just hope that the magnification is better.

I'll keep you posted. Now I just have to wait for the package to arrive.

And of course I ordered watch crystal glue as well. :)

On another note: I've returned the Lady's DJ to Silix. The package is currently at the international terminal in China for sorting.

  7. Alright, today I received a nice addition to my (small) collection.

First of all, this is what started it all. A Noobmariner from Andy.

    post-40195-0-73485400-1320877776.jpg

I started looking around for a replica Datejust for my wife, and suddenly I noticed a couple of other interesting watches at Silix's website.

There wasn't much else to do but place an order. Today the package arrived...

Lets leave this pic out thanks...Ken

"Metal bracelet" - Well, that's at least a part of what should be inside. But the package is so small!

    post-40195-0-33717300-1320877781.jpg

Stamps are good, let's open it up!

    post-40195-0-88817100-1320877782.jpg

A box? Ok, I guess I have to open this one as well...

    post-40195-0-59531100-1320877784.jpg

Bubble wrap! Oh the joy! (For my daughter, that is.)

    post-40195-0-20071500-1320877786.jpg

    The weight seems about right.

    post-40195-0-23128100-1320877788.jpg

Look! Three... what ever that may be. But they're wrapped in aluminium foil.

Let's get them out of the bubble wrap.

    post-40195-0-25288400-1320877790.jpg

Yes, that is aluminium foil. I hope they're not supposed to go into the oven.

    post-40195-0-42671700-1320878133.jpg

That's much better! Now, what do we have here?

It's a lady's Datejust, SS, fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet and pink dial with roman numerals, a red Colamariner, and a blue sub.

    post-40195-0-76397800-1320878252.jpg

Out of their plastic bags, but still covered with cling film.

Let's start with the blue sub, shall we?

    post-40195-0-56532400-1320878528.jpg

I love how this is actually more purple than blue.

    post-40195-0-37397300-1320878255.jpg

No, I haven't set the time and date yet. Magnification is a bit on the small side, but at $29.99 - who cares?

    post-40195-0-21144100-1320878257.jpg

    Caseback looks nice.

    post-40195-0-42283900-1320878258.jpg

The crown is obviously not in the right position, but I don't mind.

    post-40195-0-67369800-1320878259.jpg

    I'm very happy with this.

Now, moving on to the red Colamariner. Coca-Cola is actually my favourite (non-alcoholic) beverage. About ten years ago, when I started working in the IT business, we had free Coke in the office. I could easily down six cans a day. That's two litres. Don't drink that much today, though.

    post-40195-0-05792000-1320878261.jpg

    Looking good so far.

    post-40195-0-38106000-1320878262.jpg

The date wheel seems slightly misaligned. (If anybody knows how to fix this, I wouldn't mind a couple of pointers.)

    post-40195-0-82364200-1320878264.jpg

Caseback is quite similar to the blue one.

    post-40195-0-68433000-1320878263.jpg

    Crown wheel as well.

    post-40195-0-99452300-1320878865.jpg

This is also a very nice looking watch.

What I noticed about these two subs is that the mid links are solid, unlike the Noobmariner. The date font seems to be a bit better and the hands and dial markers are generally bigger. They all have decent lume, but the pearl on the blue one is definately better than on the red one. I wonder why, since they're strikingly similar. They were both $29.99 from Silix.

Now, moving on to the lady's Datejust. It was a bit more expensive, but still quite cheap.

    post-40195-0-10944800-1320879123.jpg

It looks good, but it seems to me that the cyclops is too low. It's about a millimeter or so, which is enough to make it difficult to see the date when looking straight at it.

    post-40195-0-43572900-1320879124.jpg

Caseback looks alright, as does the bracelet, which, by the way, has hollow mid links, just like the gen.

    post-40195-0-46805400-1320879125.jpg

Crown position is alright, as far as I can see. Perhaps a tiny bit low compared to a gen.

    post-40195-0-82355300-1320879126.jpg

This is where you can see the misalignment of the cyclops.

    post-40195-0-69534700-1320879121.jpg

It's clear in this picture as well.

A question: Would you accept this watch as it is? I've emailed Silix, but I'm still waiting for a reply. I hope this can be resolved somehow. I think it's a bit too much of a misalignment.

Now, let's play a game of "Spot the Gen!":

    post-40195-0-91043600-1320879439.jpg

Here's my entire collection of Rolex and "Rolex" watches. Which one is genuine?

    post-40195-0-57511000-1320879438.jpg

Is it this one? No, we've already made it clear that it was just delivered from Silix.

    post-40195-0-49212100-1320879446.jpg

What about this one? No, of course not.

    post-40195-0-77470500-1320879444.jpg

How about this one? Stop playing around! You know it's not.

    post-40195-0-95066900-1320879442.jpg

Could it be this one? Now, that's tricky. It didn't arrive from Silix, but it's quite clear it's a Noobmariner. In fact it says so at the beginning of this post.

    post-40195-0-30678600-1320879441.jpg

Is it really that crappy Datejust? Yes, very good! You've spotted the genuine Rolex!

It's a 1989 Datejust with jubilee bracelet, blue stick dial and fluted, stainless steel bezel.

    Thankyou for playing!

Oh, and sorry about the picture quality. I used my phone.

  8. Well, the watches have arrived, and they all look great. The blue sub is almost purple. And to think I was considering modding a sub to get a purple one. This is excellent. :)

And as you can see in the QC pic of all watches together, the datejust is indeed a lady sized one. And I thought I was ordering a midsize. :fool:

Well, the error is certainly on my behalf (although it said 29mm and not 26mm on the website). The wife's in France at the moment, and I just hope she'll like it anyway.

I noticed some differences compared to my black noobmariner, like solid midlinks, less magnification of the cyclops, but tha't just details. At that price, they all look great. :clap2:

And it's a minor issue that the cyclops on the small datejust sits a bit too low, but I'll think about it and see if it's something that's worth talking to Silix about.

  9. why is a gen like movement so important? same underlying reason

It could be that the crown will be in the correct position (same as gen) and it will accept gen dial and hands, which makes it look more like a gen. The bezel construction is, imo, not that important as long as the look is right.

That said, I'm quite happy with my noobmariner. :p

  10. This is definately becoming an addiction. I've just ordered a cheap Datejust for my wife and two ultra cheap subs from Silix...

    http://www.silix-prime.com/rol064-p-1982.html

    http://www.silix-prime.com/rol125-p-2043.html

    http://www.silix-prime.com/rol154-p-2072.html

The pearl came off of my black sub, but Andrew has sent a new bezel insert by air mail. At the time being I'm back to using my gen Datejust on a daily basis.

  11. Hi,

I'm very fond of my Noobmariner, which is currently awaiting a new bezel insert, but I also like the colour purple.

So today I thought of the possibilities to combine the two. Think of a 16610LV but with purple instead of green.

Would it be possible to repaint a dial as well as a bezel insert with another colour?

I don't mind if the dial print is gone, but I would like the figures on the bezel insert to remain in place.

    Any ideas?

  12. I've only bought from Andy (yourtrustytime) so far, but I'm more than happy with his service.

He has the Milgauss you're looking for with either an low beat 21J asian movement here:

    http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_237&products_id=4760

    Or a "swiss" ETA 25J 28.8kbph here:

    http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_237&products_id=4761

He also has a bunch of DSSDs here:

    http://www.yourtrustytime.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_8

As previous posters have said - go with the trusted dealers here. I know I'm a newbie too, but I did my homework before buying. The dealers recommended here are trusted for a reason.

    Good luck with your purchase!

  13. I'm bumping this thread just to say thanks. I bought some 600 and 1200 grit sandpaper, and I know longer slit my wrists while wearing my Noobmariner.

Unfortunately, though, I have to go back to my trusted Gillette for shaving...

BK doesn't supply replacement crowns anymore, which is a pity, and I'm still too much of a p*ssy to try to fix the CGs.
