  1. Yup, no such thing. I'm a lifelong New Yorker and while there are still places to buy crappy reps, nobody sells the good reps at a brick & mortar. Never have, likely never will. But do use the visit to try on plenty of gens to decide which ones you want a rep of. Within three blocks on Madison ave you've got Breguet, IWC and Panerai shops where they're happy to let you try on anything you like if you ask politely.

  2. Panermaniac, the eBay seller was dr.chrono. I'm sure if you search completed auctions you'll find it. I just shipped it back to him for a refund -- I bet he'd be happy to sell it to you. I couldn't find a gen tube, but I'll admit I didn't look that hard -- the rep crown is really, really close and I didn't want to start retapping the case on my very favorite essentially irreplaceable rep.

  3. I recently got a SuperOcean Heritage v2 M2M. It's a gorgeous watch that I'll be sending to cwazy for lume service at the end of the month. The only other thing that bugs me is the crown. It's not rounded enough or deeply cut enough. Someone is selling a used gen crown on eBay for $65 -- any idea if it'll fit before I decide whether it's worth the money?

  4. Welcome Simstre.  You can usually find a Pro Hunter sub on the M2M sales board every few weeks or so.  I think folks get a bit bored of the black color after a while.  You may want to some research on the board before pulling the trigger on the IWC Portuguese chrono -- there are reliability issues with some chronos.  The Cartier Santos is another you can often find for sale M2M, and is a terrific rep.  I kinda wish I hadn't traded mine away,

  5. Ah, yeah, zooming in I see it. Nice work. I wouldn't make it any deeper but I might bring it further up the line of the lugs toward the case. It's hard to tell from those pictures. Might be cool to take some off the bottom of the lugs instead -- get more of that "hawksbill" effect from the classic subs. But then I might just be full of crap LOL

  6. I'll confess, I'm in love. That is what the Project X Big Crown homage should have been. Throw on some solid bars and a Bond-pattern NATO and it'll be stunning. Or maybe a brown suede. May I suggest beveling the lugs? Too bad it's not possible to do a coin edge bezel -- that's the only other detail I would change in a perfect world. Anyway, I really don't mean to nitpick; terrific job in creating a gorgeous watch.

  7. I've got two F.A. Jones reps inbound after a weekend buying spree. I am interested in doing some mods to one of them, so want to start by picking the forum's collective brain if I can. I will post progress updates as the project goes on.

I've got a steel case/white dial/blue hands&numbers/decorated Asian movement one and a steel case/black dial/silver hands&numbers/decorated Asian movement one coming. Both with mineral crystals. I'm well aware that there was no steel/black dial/silver gen but am just a sucker for that color combo, so probably won't do much to change that one. Good news is the white one came with two gen croc Donerix straps, so I'm all set on that front.

Anyway, mods I'd like to do -- in order of ease/likelihood of success -- are: (1) replace crystals with double-AR sapphire; (2) get longer gen-spec hands; and (3) have the white dial refinished and numbers repainted to look more like the gen.

Re 1, someone previously posted that this helenarou crystal would fit: http://bit.ly/1iJBtps

If anyone could confirm before I order them I'd appreciate it. I know the gen did not have AR, but I like the look better.

Re 2, the stock minute hand is a good 1 or 2 mm too short to reach the indices like the gen does. I'm hoping to find the right length ones from Ofrei:

Re 3, does anyone have a recommendation of a modder who could do the dial work (if it even can be done)? Basically I'm looking for the IWC version of RolexAddict....

Thanks in advance for any help -- I'm well aware of the folly of spending hundreds to mod a $150 rep, but I fell in love with the look of it and now want to make it perfect.

  8. Before you know it you're $4,500 into a frankenwatch that 99% of the public cannot tell from a $500 Raffles build.

Make that 99.9% of the public including ADs. I wore my cartel-cased 5508 rep into Torneau on 57 Street yesterday because I wanted to try on a couple of gens before springing for the reps (how's that for a switcheroo?).

Anyway, I had two different guys working there compliment me on it. Spending the last two weeks on RWG has left me wanting to say "yes, the face, insert and hands aging was done well, but can't you see that my bezel isn't properly coin-edged and my lug holes are too small?!!" But I held in the madness, smiled, said thanks, and asked to try on the DSSD. (Kinda bulky.)

  9. I was first introduced to reps years ago when i wanted the new Tag golf watch but was unwilling to pay that ridiculous price for the quartz gen. I ordered a $70 rep from some shady site and the clasp fell apart within a week.

Never looked at reps again for a decade or so until a friend returned from China this summer with surprisingly good Montblanc flyback chronometer and Hublot Big Bang reps. He gave me the Montblanc, I caught the rep bug, and now am the proud owner of a rep Rolex 5508 Bond sub from a RWG member that I'm working on improving. The watch that is, not the member.
