The Zigmeister did a great job. That bezel is fantastic and makes a huge difference, and of course the pearl looks excellent. If you wouldn't mind PMing me a source for the bezel I'd be grateful... I'm still on the hunt for one myself.
The polishing paste method sounds like a winner to me. Lacquer thinner and steel wool works like a charm for me, but it's nice not to have to handle a solvent.
SC isn't the place to go if soft straps is your thing. If you want soft and thick I highly recommend the Carrier and/or Copperplate straps from Micah at Vintager Straps (dot com).
Never cared much for Mark, even before he was outed as a hack scammer, if I'm being honest. The I taught myself watch making bit is great. What a joke. And I love the line about not owning reps any more. Yeeeeeaa RIIIIIIIGHT! He might have one gen now (I'm sure he could afford at least one after raping so many RWGers), but I guarantee he still has his reps.
Oh well, good riddance. But I think I've said that before.
Nice effort, and thanks for taking one for the team. This is what makes RWG the best forum by a mile. I'm actually surprised you got as far as you did without vector graphics. Why not print some as is for people who want them (since it is still an improvement) and maybe some day be able to refine it and release a rocket rev2 dial? Just a thought.
The trapezoidal 4 is correct for pre-F 16610s and most early models. Triangular 4 came along when they got rid of the lug holes, or thereabouts. Below is the correct part number for modern sub insert.
Better in terms of inhibiting reflections. They're using a double layer coating and putting the double layer on both sides of the crystal. It makes a difference. But it's not tremendous.
See that's just it... I don't care what everybody thinks. I do what I like. What do you say to the many owners of gen watches who purposely strip the outer AR coating off because that's what they like? I say to each his own.
Plus gen crown and tube, right? I'd say the gen crystal is an unnecessary expense. Double AR on the rep crystal would fit the bill. But the gen crystal is indeed a nice touch.
I had heard of a shop in the San Mateo / Foster City area that people were happy with and didn't blink an eye at reps.... Darned if I can remember the name now though. I can recommend someone in Sacramento, otherwise.
Further discussion can certainly wait until after your whale shark expedition, but I assumed we were talking about a single crystal. But if we did pursue a double layer, we definitely don't want the inner layer to be glass. Glass doesn't produce the nice blueish hue when AR coated, only sapphire does. I'm quite certain that producing a flat piece of sapphire with a hole for chieftang's... err... my cyclops would be easy and inexpensive, but only in quantity. And one question is how many watches would work with the same hole location?
Good things come to those who wait, as they say.... The Zigmeister frees up in January, right? Halloween, then Thanksgiving. Christmas, and then New Years... Before you know it, it's January.
Pfffft. Who can't afford an IWC? BTW, I voted for the SFSO. It's a decent watch that doesn't attract attention. In fact most people would probably think it is a Fossil... if they even know that much about watches.
