  1. People seem a bit harsh to me on this.

OP doesn’t have to have had unrealistic expectations to expect better than this. It’s not so much that the watch has a fault, more that the dealer might not be responding as we’d all want.

Although, OP, I’m a little confused. Has Andrew offered to take the watch back or not? As one of the posters above pointed out, none of this process is legit so it seems daft to complain if you’re being asked to disguise the shipment back for a repair. If Andrew has agreed to take it back, what’s the problem exactly?

  2. The categories seem a bit limiting for day-to-day living though?  Just some off the top of my head that seem quite popular:

    - Diving under an offshore oil rig but you don't want your dive buddy to get the wrong idea, you like him, but you're not dressing to impress him watch

    - Co-piloting a bomber and you want to calculate fuel consumption and all the electronic equipment has failed, and nobody has a calculator or phone, and you're also the only person since the 1950s that can remember how a slide rule works watch.

    - Timing how long it takes Blofeld to explain how he's going to kill you and escape watch

    - Goddamit, this is an emergency, can a single person in this room tell me the current phase of the moon NOW watch

    - The 'I dress like a lady on weekends' watch (Doxa Sub 300T, obviously)

Tremendous. Just when I thought I had my bases covered with 422 reps, I realise I’m an amateur with simply nothing to wear. I need to get to my TD.

For the Oil rig dives, I think a Sinn U1 would be appropriate.

Co piloting a bomber I’m spoiled for choice but reliability matters in these situations, so going gen seems sensible. I’ll trade in a few reps for a Glycine.

For Blofeld confrontations I’ll rely on Natuq’s penis extender watches, what with the sexual tension between Roger Moore and the white cat stroker.

I just had to google Doxa 300T. The orange one would be spot on for a beach weekend when I want to eat ice cream on the promenade but I’d have to swap it out when done.

  3. Sure, we all start off telling ourselves “I need a watch for work and maybe a more casual one for the weekends”...

...but that’s quickly a very inadequate mental framework for justifying more purchases.

So, I’m sipping whiskey and mapping out my categories.

Dress watch. Sports watch. Quirky watch. Muscle watch (any 47mm PAM or DSSD). Dinner date watch. Bar/cocktails watch. Wedding watch. Grabbing coffee by myself watch.

    - Out during the day, casual. Sub is the classic choice. But maybe an IWC spitfire, metal strap.

    - if you’re wearing a shirt, maybe a leather strap. Petit Prince on a decent leather strap could do the job.

    Then there’s work:

    - everyday watch - where you don’t have to wear a suit to work. Any PAM on rubber or brown leather. Tudor Black Bay.

Or a dress watch with a brown leather strap if we’re talking a chinos/blue shirt environment. IWC Portugesier?

    - everyday watch for when you do need a suit and tie. PP Aquanaut might be OTT. Simple Rolex like an Explorer I?

    - sales meetings where you don’t want to come across a flash [censored] wearing the clients annual salary on your wrist. Pam111 could fit the bill.

    - sales meetings where everyone is jostling. Surely any AP with a touch of rose gold. An Aquanaut if you want to go classier. Or a steel AP Royal Oak.

    - Dinner dates where you care. Wedding watches. Got to be a gloss black leather strap. Cartier Santos perhaps too obvious. A JLC chrono?

  4. The APPLE Watch is something I keep trying to like, but tire of easily.

I was in a part of the world recently where it seemed every second person was wearing an Apple Watch. After a few days, I found myself liking them more and wishing I had mine with me. Weak character I guess :p

Fast forward to now and a few weeks of browsing the forums and lurking the M2M threads and my Apple watch is safely back in the drawer...

  5. I think my answer to this question is... all of them.

    Why?

Well - this watch - which I’ve never owned:
    https://amjwatches.co.uk/hublot-big-bang-tourbillon-chronograph-cathedral-minute-repeater-all-black-404ci0110rx.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5q64zbTW3QIVCUPTCh2zsQQbEAQYASABEgLqSfD_BwE

is less reliable than this watch (which I’ve also never owned but it was the first one I really lusted for back when I was 8):
    https://www.watchshop.com/unisex-casio-core-collection-calculator-alarm-chronograph-watch-ca-53w-1er-p99984413.html?utm_source=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=shoppingfeeds&source=froogle&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIyOith7XW3QIVshXTCh3xkw73EAQYASABEgKw1fD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

No-one buys a gen for reliability or for knowing the time.

Even the most expensive AP divers watch isn’t something a serious diver bets their life on these days.

People buy high end gen watches because they appreciate beauty and craftsmanship. They take sheer delight in quality.

They also do so because, like all of us, the persuasive powers of marketing win them over. We all know a 9.99 price point is a psychological trick and we all know a Rolex doesn’t really compensate for not having a six pack stomach. But try telling that your sub-conscious :)

If I buy a rep, I can take delight in quality (perhaps less reliably, but it’s always relative and is still to be found; I have a Domi modded AP that is simply amazing quality). I can afford to do experiments and tinker with new styles and new models.

And I still don’t need to go to the gym :p

  6. Hello. A pam 111 does not use a quick change strap bar as it does not have the push button quick release on the lugs.

You can probably buy some springbars from panatime. They look like pam bars but dont need to be screwed as they are spring bars.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks @bagsters

That’s exactly what I went for in the end. Seems to be working well so far.

  7. Hi. Having had a 111 for a year or so, I’ve recently woken up to the joy of changing the straps (I know, pretty late to the party).

But changing them is so fiddly...

I read a passing reference in a forum post to “quick change bars”

Am I right to think I can buy these to speed up the strap change process? Could anyone fill me on where to get them?

    Cheers, Andrew

  8. Hi all

I’m considering my first franken project - a DSSD.

Can anyone give me pointers on the best source for gen parts?

I’m most interested in a gen dial and/or hands, as those seem the hardest to rep well but am open to any advice or other views of course.

    Cheers.

  9. Hi all

Trusty time have just released a Portuguese with secs@6 which claims to be "More reliable than the Asia 7750 movement with secs at 6:00"

    http://www.trustytimezone.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=30_189&products_id=16551

The way I'd understood the problem with the earlier models is that the factories didn't trouble to insert an extra gear for the secs mechanism and they'd have to fundamentally rebuild the 7750 to not have issues with a secs@6 feature.

This new model uses a clone A79350 movement that says it's the same thickness as the gen.

Just wondering what y'all think about the likely reliability?
