  1. I'm leaning towards the Nikon D40, any thoughts?

I have the D40 and like it a lot. amazon has been running an on and off unadvertised special for $569 that gives you the 18-135 lens with it. great deal if you can get it.

Regardless, I think it's a great entry level SLR - go for it.

Have you read dpreview.com? that'll confuse you some more - lol

    good luck!

  2. You know who loves Frank Mullers? The Risti folk. They seem to show them in their wrist-checks every week, and one chap posted he received in the post a brand-new (gen obviously ) Conquistador only two days ago. Showed the box and everything.

Very pretty watch. I may just have to get me one of those, AA1.

It'd be a nice addition to your collection. I don't think they offer the mvm't that I have anymore though. Here's a pic of mine. I just blew that "well photographed" statement you make below though...

No offence to anyone there, but their wrist-checks are not as imaginative, or well-photographed as ours. Not even close.

When I said 130 straps I was being, as ever, conservative. Maybe more...I don't want to know. Just got a Delaurian yesterday night...

I have one too. How do you like it? I really like his work.

  3. dang. you beat me to the answer. missing on the edges, right?

the movement looks good. is that a gen movement?

Yep, you're exactly right. Sorry about that - thought that people were getting bored with it.

No - it's not a gen mvm't but a nice one eh? The H series pic has the gen mvm't of course, but I didn't show it.

    Thanks for takin a look.

  4. I'd be lying to you if I knew exactly what was wrong, but that's the one I like best. :p

I should've known you'd like that one. It's my wifes gen and I think you'd have a hard time ripping it off of her wrist. Funny thing with her is that she won't touch a rep. yet....

Tell her what prize she gets, Don Pardo.

I was thinking more Monty Hall

    Thanks for looking

  5. I like this... it is something I can participate in.

It's been the opposite for me. First gens then reps, now both. I am more selective in my gens now though and only buy pam and rolex.

I like both of them for their own reasons and never confuse the two. A rep is a rep.. although some of the rep pams I own feel real close to my gens.

I do have a Franck Muller Conquistador from a few yrs ago that is really close imo to a gen and the mvm't is great or should I say the same as the gen. Too bad it never gets any wrist time.

@Vbarret - 130 straps!! That's incredible! I have about 20 and wonder what the heck I'm doing. I still keep buying them though.

  6. Here's the added pics

    Now you see???

Out of the 3, which one do you like? The old, new, or H series (last one)

  7. I know my pics are bad..

I left the lugs and screws out so that's not it.

@hambone - "Is there a port for diesel fuel? Hope not".

    That was funny.

@carlsbadrolex - "They spelled Panerai wrong??? MADE YA LOOK!"

    Yea you did

Let me see if I can take some comparison pics after dinner that will show things a little better.

  8. First, I do counsel you to get the DSN 111h as your first PAM. It's just so versatile, you'll love it.

I would listen to vbarrett on this one, regardless of who you choose to get it from. It's a nice starter.

And don't worry... you'll end up with the fiddy soon :D

Also, you might want to start looking for straps. 24mm for 111 and 26mm for fiddy. vbarrett has become one of the experts in this area - look at some of her great reviews.

    Good luck and enjoy.

  9. That's great, glad to hear you fixed it. :clap2: I know you feel proud!

I had the same problem, I just wish I'd of found this forum prior to my attempt of fixing mine. Mine ended up in pieces and will now need to go to somebody to put it back together - It's somewhere around 3 yrs old so I think it's worth putting back together and serviced. Actually it's half way apart so I started the service

My wife kept telling me I didn't know what I was doing but did I listen.... nooo. I hate when that happens. I still get a good chuckle out of it though. Sad but funny :D

  10. All in all, Davidsens 183 seems to be the best offering for that watch from any dealer. No need to fix the canon pin, lume, and his straps are not that bad either. Damn fine out of the box rep and hard to beat.

Thanks hambone - the only DSN I have is the 127 and love it - if the 183 is comparable, I know I'd be happy.

  11. @Followup to AA1 below: To me the dial looks crisper on the DSN models, but I'd lie to you if I told you I knew the EXACT "tells" between one or the other. Remember that DSN basically builds his own models, which is different than modding. Modding can cost a lot, but sometimes guys here prefer that, as it feels more of a challenge to get it JUST right. You mentioned Rolli's point about the lugs. This tells me that perhaps you would be satisfied with TWP's version(s), then.

And yes, the reasons I mentioned above are my opinions of why someone would choose DSN or TWP. I wish I could offer more to you, but alas, that's all I have to give. Boo. I myself look forward to the replies when TWP and others wake up.

BTW, my two gen Panerai watch purchases in future are the PAM 111, and the PAM 183. Those I know FOR SURE I want. They're that special.

    Good choice, darling!

Thanks for the reply and you have great taste too because the 111 and 183 are two that I have gens of and yes I agree, they are that special!

You mention, TWP waking to respond. My wife just came in and told me I'm screwed tomorrow for work (you know what time it is), and she's right - ( I hate when that happens - lol). Good night - get some rest yourself, you need it I know

  12. Thanks V -

I've compared DSN with TWP and it appears that TWP does take more time in servicing his compared to DSN (I guess) and TWP imo definitely has better lume work. But what about DSN's xtal and case compared to TWP's? DSN has some good xtals... And what about dials?. Rolli also mentions the lug bars... not a big concern though as I think that's something they all have the same. Also the crown tubes. I've read that DSN has a good one that doesn't strip as easily....

I know you said DSN, are the above the reasons why? I think I'd loose out on the lume maybe... the lume in his pics looks pretty good..but gain in other areas?

EDIT @Vbarret: You're welcome - I understand what you must be feeling - I've been there. Just last year in FL to be exact. (I live on the east coast but have another home near daytona and my mother is near tampa). be strong - you have many friends. sincerely, my prayers are with you...

  13. Hi - great forum!

I initially joined the forum because I've been a fan of The Zigmeister for many years and admire / respect his talents. Through hours of reading posts, I've come to admire so many of you for what you bring to the forum. rolli, I've already learned so much from your posts, and vbarrett, your affection for straps is incredible and I look forward to your strap reviews. (My regards to you and your family). The list goes on and on...

I know noobies aren't generally accepted for coming onto a forum and their first post is a question, but to be honest - I don't have much more to offer other than questions in hopes that it will also help others as much as it does me. So on to my question if you've mangaged to read this far...

I'm a big fan of PAM's (surprise) and have a few gens and reps. My very first pam rep was a 183 when they first came out from EL. I liked it so much I bought a gen and now my wife took it over and wears it everyday and I'm happy she gets to enjoy it. I still have the 183 from EL and it still works great but... I've come to want one of better quality but not enough to buy another gen... I've searched the 4 forums I know of and haven't really found comparisons on what's out there. I'm leaning towards DSN's 183E (I got his 127 and am very happy), for the simplicity of "out of the box" instant gratification. I'm American, and that seems to be the norm for most of us nowadays. So, can I get your opinions on why you prefer one collectors 183 over the others?

    Thanks!
