Hi all

I got a package from PT today that contained a brand new Panerai 183 Black Seal

It is really more beautiful in real life.

The movement is a Swiss ETA 6497, and as far as i can see, it looks like the new version with the correct shape regulator, working swanneck - but correct me if i am wrong.

but let the pictures speak for them self - not Puggy quality - sorry

Thanks PT - this is a GREAT prize to win

Sure is the new movt - nice - needs a lume job though!! Tell you what is strange - in the first pic of the balance wheel and regulateur notice that the pallet fork bridge plate is a single curved arm with single screw.

The normal plate has two screws and was a symmetrical shape as in this pic of a gen movt:

I wonder if this is an ETA design change. Also the movt has serial numbers and the ETA stamp under the balance wheel but no 6496 markings. Also the new movt has the proper shaped balance wheel spokes so I wonder if there is a mix of asian 6497 parts with the ETA parts? It's definitely ETA but these differences are a bit odd. This movt also comes with the correct height cannon pinion so that minute hand needs a shaving down to remove the recess.

yes you are quit right finepics, the fork bridge plate is "half" compared to the pictures that you attached - strange - also the barrelgears have the correct bevel and smooth finish.

the ingravings has also been ingraved in the movement and not glued on.

So do you mean that the movement in my 183 has the xl cannon pinion so all i need is to shave down the minuthand to make it fit ? - it could explain the angle that the minuthand was mounted in.

but as far as i remember, the hands for the short pinion have a longer tube inorder to be able to fit to the pinion and go clear of the secondhand -

Yes the older type had the longer tube on the hands to compensate for tht shorter pinion - but whilst they ahve fitted the taller pinion they have not cahnged the hands!!! Just file that min hand tube down to .44mm and you will not have a recessed pin!!!

The engravings were never glued onto the ETA modded movt - that was only on the original ETA 6497 without the modded bridge plates and on the China 6497. The winding gears on this new movt are certainly much better than ever before but the teeth still need to be polished!
