z80
Recently I've been getting nostalgic about a few weeks I spent in Corozal Belieze in the 80's and I'm wondering how much has changed. I was there fixing up some houses as a volunteer. I stayed the whole time on the second floor of a Chinese restaurant named REXO, which was right next door to a nice lady named Mirna (who housed a few others from the team).. she had a cat named Dirt. Anyway, if you have been to Corozal recently, a few things I remember, and would like updates on are: Is REXO still around? Run by Mr and Mrs. Lo. Is Tony's by the Sea still there? I remember the brochure pics had white sandy beaches, the reality was a cement pier There was a little store run by a cool guy named Rene, this was close to REXO, I think on 3rd street maybe.. There was a guy with a trash can welded on to the front of a bicycle he used to sell homemade ice cream made from a local fruit out of. Darn tasty stuff for .25 cents Belizean. On the bus into Mexico (Chetumal), kids would sell homemade tamalies wrapped in banana leaves out of paint buckets for $1 Belizean, darn tasty as well.. I was really daring in my youth, as far as this stuff goes, I still am. Cay Chapel is a resort island off the coast of Belieze City, we went there for a day, and I noticed that a room and surf & turf dinner combo was about $15.. I bet this has changed a bit. Corozal is one place on my list to visit again. I am hesitant because I don't want the memory spoiled if it's gone downhill. I know alot of small towns in Central America have had "issues" in the past 20 years. This is a place I felt completely safe walking around day or night. By the time we were finished alot of the town knew us. Well.. enough for now, back to work.
