I rarely set the date on a watch I haven't worn in a while.   I am curious as to whether I am in the majority or minority on this earth shaking topic.

First thing I do when I pick up a watch that I haven't worn for a while is give it a good winding, I run the hands past 12 to determine AM/PM, then set it to the correct time (having hacked the second hand at 12:00) Once the time is set I adjust the date, provided I am nowhere near midnight of course. I am now ready to go!

exception to the rule: I pick up the watch, slap it on my wrist and wear it for a couple of hours around the house without making any adjustment. After some time has passed it is nice and wound up, I remove the watch and start into the first procedure, skipping the winding!

This is one of those interesting questions that exposes the small idiosyncrasies that set us all apart.
