Aquifer_Pro
Hello all! I think I may have been bitten by the rep bug. I'm not new to automatic watches, though. I have an old Omega Seamaster that my dad gave me (when he won a (gen) Rolex in a sales contest for his company) and a Fortis Fleiger that I bought at a good price before the prices skyrocketed about 5 years ago. I also have an Orient auto and a Seiko 5 military auto that I really like. However, there's always been a number of watches that I really like but simply couldn't afford to take a second mortgage out to buy (Bell & Ross, Fortis chronos, Omega Speedmasters, etc.). My wife & I went to NYC for a few days recently and I saw some street vendors selling knockoffs. I assumed they were all quartz and total junk. However, one of the B&R watches caught my eye and I picked it up to check it out. I was stunned to realize it was an automatic when I saw the second hand start to sweep around. I knew it was a knockoff for sure, but I didn't realize that they used auto movements so I was intrigued enough to pick it up for $50 (I know, I probably got ripped off, but it seemed like a quintessential NY souvenir). The funny thing is it keeps really good time and looks quite good. Its one of the 46mm sized ones, so it's a bit of a hoss on my wrist. I got curious about the movement & started doing some research and came across this site. I'm now assuming its just some generic 21J asian movement, but it does have a calender dial at the 3:00 spot and a 24 hr dial at the 6:00 (and also some non-moving dial w/ 7 spots which I assume is 7 days of the week - it only moves when I push the top button.) Now I'm looking to see about maybe getting a slightly nicer 42mm version w/ a real sapphire xtal. I also might get a rep Breitling one of these days since that's another watch that I've always admired but never had the scratch and even if I were to save up for it couldn't really justify the $. Well that's my story - I look forward to learning more about the enigmatic rep world and maybe getting a few of my dream watches in rep versions.
