  1. Perhaps the best summary of our experience. Every WIS is a philospher of sorts, and it goes beyond stallone, 007 and marketing. If I'm correct, time, self and consciousness are all connected. Of course, I'm on the empty side of a bottle of italian red, but time can only show itself in a feeling. And it is this feeling we strive to quantify using discrete units, eg, seconds with objective intervals. If you remember from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, the attempt to quantifiy quality can only result in ECT, electro shock therapy. so, don't worry what time it "really" is. It is some time, trust me.
  2. I know this isn't going to be on the wrist,,,I cut the stem too short. The first time and right when I don't have a spare. Cool, I had another stem. Got this going this morning.
  3. I remember looking at my first pam in an ad in watchtime thinking, who could enjoy a watch like that?, then some strange thing happened and I was totally into panerai. I think it is something the richemont group puts in the water.
  4. The markers do not bother me, but I don't care for the plastic movement holder If it just had a decent holder, I would be selling a few watches for this one. Any idea where I could get a decent movement holder,,,perhaps this isn't a difficult fix.....
  5. I can't believe how often it comes down to using the Dremel. That worked out great. No problems and no more pin for the seconds hand.
  6. I was working on a project today, basically one of davidsen's new asian 6497 movements used in a panerai base with no seconds hand. At first I thought it was some problem with the dial feet but the pin for the seconds hand will not let the dial be placed properly. What do to shorten this pin?
  7. For every ten thousand people that see how silly that price is, there will be one silly sap happy to pay it thinking all the way home how exclusive their buckle is and how only they could afford such a thing.
  8. Thanks for the info. I thought it would be something like that.
  9. For me, the gen 111H was like a beautiful but high-maintenance girlfriend. I just didn’t think it was worth it. However, still nice to look at pics, especially if I didn’t pay for it.
  10. Interesting,,,thanks. Here is one I've been using in the US. No prices on the page and you have to call to order but the straps are perfect for panerai and the gen croc go for about 40 and you can get extra long. http://www.internationalwatchman.com/home.html
  11. Davidsen has all the parts to make that,,the only difference would be a slightly darker lum. Looks very temping.
  12. The fiddy,,,I actually had a perfect one, but sold it in a moment of insanity.
  13. For some strange reason, this reminded me of the gen panerai forums.......Not sure why????
  14. 6,000 extra for white gold? I'm not up on gold prices but that seems excessive. I actually just checked and it is 700 an ounce, so perhaps that isn't too bad.
  15. I got the same one, great watch. Nice way to begin an obsession.
  16. I see your point on the IWC movement, but if the evolution of reps grows at its current rate, in less than a year we will see a similar high qualitiy asian movement and about any other interesting complication out there. And all well under 1K. The only bad thing about this goes back to the first statement..."I have I hard time justifying the extra $10,600.00 for this compared to the Rep from Joshua" It is just a matter of time before some critical mass also comes to this same conclusion. At that point, the billion dollar companies will start spending some real money stopping reps.
  17. Nice pics,,,both of those are in my top ten...
  18. When I first started getting into reps I could never understand why some people were anti gen. I am starting to see this side more and more. 4000 (usd) for a basic panerai, 10,000 for a fiddy, 11,000 for a IWC bip pilot??? Unless the watch is skeletonized by hand, I can't see paying over 1,000 for any SS watch. I was just looking at an old issue of watchtime, Muller is supposed to be worth around 300 million (I might be wrong, this is just from memory). He made enough money, I'll take the rep.
  19. Watching a tourbillon in person is such a joy, it is worth the risks. I've personally held the asian version and a blancpain and both gave the same rush. Even if it breaks down in a few months would still be worth it, if for only a few moments you could consciously understand exactly what it was doing.
  20. I doubt I'll go for the swan's neck again. I don't see the point. Of course this is just personal opinion, but the origins were purely functional, so why replicate it if it doesn't do anything? One could say the same thing about the words "panerai" on the dial but I don't really need them either at this point.
  21. Next to each other, I'd go for the sub and I don't even like rolex.
  22. I finally got this thing working,,,,the 24 mm strap isn't a total insult to the 183...
  23. Nice collection, I really like the base models. Of course,,always need the fiddy to complete any collection....
  24. I agree, there is always some problem with reps, I even had problems with my two most expensive reps, each over 600 USD. Even my first new gen 111 ran two mins fast per day, so I don't think buying gen is necessarly the answer. I deal with it by learning how to accept the flaws (some of which I've done myself due to my average watch skills). Over the weekend, the crown on my vintage 3436 broke such that if you want to wind it, you have to exert pressure pulling it out as you wind. A year ago this would have made me crazy, now it doesn't bother me nearly as much. The world is imperfect and almost all watches reflect this in some way even if we really don't want them to. To quote Bender, “Screws fall out all the time, the worlds' an imperfect place”
