Mark and excelent explanation I would add that when you get the QC pic the amplitude says more than ring plus minus a few seconds a day. The amplitude will indicate the state of the movement and how the power is getting from the main spring to the escapement

As to the crown guard it is an easyer mod to make a hard one softer than to make a soft one harder. With out a better photo of the area under the balance I could not confirm that you have a Swiss movement but from that picture it does look like a Swiss 6497-1
