  1. The only experience I've had with C is a half hour long yahoo messaging conversation with him about watches, then about Sweden, as I lived there for several years. C was very friendly, and our conversation, particularly about Sweden became very detailed. Enough, where I felt comfortable in believing that he is who he says he is - a dealer in Sweden. I decided to proceed with ordering from him, but ultimately, it didn't work out for me because of issues with my WU account. He suggested going to a local WU agent. I meant to do that, but just never got around to it.

Proceed with caution, but there may yet be a reasonable explanation.

  2. Just got back from the rollie AD in town. I wore my super SD under my sleeve and had a moment to compare them...Besides the CGs, pearl, and the slightly fatter bezel insert font...its an amazing rep...Without being right next to the real deal....no way you can tell its a rep...-d

I agree with Dave_NYC. I've owned a gen SD, and find my SSD (Puretime) to be very close in terms of feel, fit and finish. I've oiled the bracelet, which helped things considerably. The endlinks on my particular SD are on par with gen, IMO - perfect fit, no slop, beefy springbars.

  3. Just a thought: I wonder if there is still people on the down low here because judging from this thread no one is complaining about being scammed. On the other hand I agree that its very ugly to jump on a gen forum to do statements as he did. More than ugly I think its sad... and because of that IMHO we should not spend our precious time around that.

Marco, I wish I could say that I still believe in Mark, but at this point . . . more than a year later . . . he still has the Cortebert pocket watch that I purchased from you, plus parts to assemble a 6152 (RXW case, davidsen crystals, dial, brevattato engraved back, etc.) and a PAM 036. Very sad, indeed.

  4. My first few transactions with that seller were positive - correct, fast shipment. Then, what followed were two very bad transactions. He sent me two incorrect inserts after a very long wait. I hated to do it, but I was finally forced to do a paypal dispute. He then included incorrect shipping information in the dispute, and Paypal sided with HIM!! I couldn't believe it. But, the guy does tons of business through them, so my guess is that he got the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway, my last resort was to give him very negative feedback. And, of course, he did the same. But, then later, he offered to send the correct inserts and mutually withdraw the feedback.

So much hassle for such small inexpensive items. I never ordered from that guy again.

I'm sorry to read that you're having similar experiences Stephane.

  5. Today, I installed a rep Speedmaster Moonwatch caseback given to me by my friend Stephane (thank you, thank you, thank you!). As far as I could tell, it is of similar, if not, same quality as the original solid caseback. The two casebacks (rep clear and gen solid) have the same thickness and thread pitch. After installing the clear back, I found (as expected) that the movement was slightly loose in the case due to the removal of the dust cover and, as a result, rattled slightly. Omega produces a taller movement ring for their clearback Speedmasters to make up for the missing dust cover. I will buy this ring for installation during the next service interval. In the meantime, I dug through my rep graveyard of parts for something to take up the slack. I found an octagonal shape wire, which I bent and inserted between the caseback and the movement ring - you can just see it along the case threads in the first pic. This worked perfectly and eliminated the play between the movement/ring and caseback. What a beautiful movement and now, thanks to Stephane, I have a clear caseback through which to view it. Here are pics below:

  6. I just received my NASA strap from Carl at Gasgasbones. Let me tell you, this is one very high quality nylon strap. It really gives the Speedmaster a very unique look. When the strap is tightened, it feels very secure. Also, the NASA logo shows prominently on the opposite side of my wrist from the watch head - I gave Carl my wrist measurements when ordering, so maybe that's on purpose. It's a bargain at $35, made to order and shipped from UK to U.S. This will live on the Speedy for a while . . .

  7. A $1000 for a Speedy is an AMAZING deal! I've been hunting on eBay, including the completed deals, and it seems impossible to find one under ~$1400. Any tips, or just plain lucky? Congrats on the watch!

There was about 2 minutes left in the auction. The pictures used in the auction were aweful, but the guy had stellar feedback. In at least several of his completed watch auctions (all positive feedback), the background in the pictures were the same as in the Speedmaster pictures. In all instances, the photos were the same - crap.

Anyway, with 2 minutes left, I studied his feedback and recent transactions and got comfortable with placing a bid. The auction price was about $900 at the time, but the reserve was not met. With a minute to go I threw in a bid of $1001, betting that he probably set the reserve at $1000 - there's no science in this - it just seemed like a reasonable, nice round number. I threw in a couple more bids after I realized that the reserve was met, and waited. To my surprise, no one placed a bid and I won the auction at $1000. IMO, I think people were unsure because of the crappy photos. But wait . . . there's more . . .

So, before sending paypal payment, I wanted to confirm at least the identity of this person and contact information. I requested the contact information from eBay, since I now had a completed auction with this person. I got a phone number and called. The guy seemed a bit surprised, but in the end, turned out to be very friendly and told me about the watch. By the end of the conversation, I was comfortable to send payment including extra for overnight shipment and got the watch the next day! And, it's been glued to my arm ever since. I've even had thoughts of selling my beautiful UPO . . . :)
