  1. I'm on Perfect Clones site now but the white dial version UPO reads different than the orange dial version. Think they're the same? I want a white dial version.

Note that Josh sells two versions of the UPO one is $30 more than the other and has "correct" dials, closer together. If you are thinking about spending on mods, think about which version is right for you. I picked the chrono version, pumpkin, and it is fantastic too. What a hefty watch, feels substantial on the wrist and in the hand.

  2. Seafoam, two comments, don't be shy about a 44mm size, they have a way of looking good on any wrist size, and be aware that the SS bracelet is heavy, particularly in the 24mm form. My first Pam and 88, has morphed into 4 in less than three months, a rate even bunnies would be proud of.

  3. In the US, Vac is good:

    Vaccum's Mod Shop

...at least I think he's in the US???

Watchdog is in Canada. He can work on anything...but is generally very busy as he doesn't work on watches as a living but a hobby. His day job is quite time consuming and can involve lots of travel, so you often have to book months ahead...but he's extremely reliable, efficient, professional, and all 'round, a great guy!!

Vac from what I read is tops and one of the few people that Watchdog recommends as well.

Morning Steve, is Watchdog same as Watchdog? If so/if not how to contact, through PM to what name?

I am sure I typed Watchdog the second reference, and it came up Watchdog when "processed", now that is a trick! Who is responsible for that?

  5. I have several of the other watches you listed as well as an Offshore. I don't have any photo's handy but I can tell you the Offshore in steel on the bracelet feels stupidly huge and heavy compared to any of the others. To me its not pleasantly big either, I'm happier with a 1950 even. I can't recall ever wearing the Offshore outside the house.

I'm hoping it's better on a strap as I plan to order the Barrichello very soon.

Much more comfortable the RB II is, as it has a ti case and very comfortable leather strap. Not heavy at all, but it does have substance. Only thing a bit weird is that it is sometimes hard to read the hands, as they are silver on a silver background, especially in natural light.

  6. After reading this thread, it is clear that this is a touchy subject for some. Perhaps a reflection of the divide between haves and have nots. A point not made clearly, at least to my reading, is the so called value of design or intellectual property. This is part of the reason for a premium for any product, and well, look at what is has done for Bill Gates. I bet the China factories make more Pannies in a year, that OP has made since its first watch. Yet, look at the innovation at OP in inventing lume technologies, TWICE! The marketplace determines the value of this innovation, and since early times, there have been copiers, eager to benefit from the creations of others, at a more attractive price point.

So, let's lighten up a little. We are blessed with the opportunity to hold, modify and display beautiful and creative timepieces. They may not be originals, but they are ours to own and enjoy. There was a time, when rep watches were emerging from Asia in the 80's, when the quality was so poor it was a waste. We live in different and interesting times today.

  7. I can tell you that there is no dealer of quality reps in Toronto. There are a few crap reps for sale at the pawn shops on Church St., and some more junk if you search Craigslist. But if you want quality, buy from the dealers listed here.

    Except Silix.

That's where I was 3 months ago, and when you start to appreciate the so many other brands available, you will expand your search, via the dealers associated with this forum and be amazed at the quality. It takes about a month to decide what you want, where to buy it, buy it, and wait the 2 weeks for delivery, but it comes. Like Christmas, the waiting is part of the experience.

  8. I've always worn black dialled watches because I think they suit me the most and of course they can be really versatile. I guess thats probably the main reason why they're usually preferred over white dials.

However, recently I've been thinking that it might not be a bad idea to have one, just one, white dialled watch. The words elegant, classy and understated are usually attributed to the white dialled watches, and now I think I understand why..

I've been eyeing some pictures of the Datejust 116200 White stick dial on TZ, the exact same one that w.genzo owns and can't help but think "what a beauty!" Originally I thought about going for the black dial, but I have a MBK Nautilus which I think shares several similarities. Both have lumed stick markers, date and both are understated and elegant.

Another white dialled watch that has really caught my eye is the awesome Ebel Discovery 1911. Of course the 116200 and Discovery are a completely different style of watch, but I think they both look excellent for different reasons.

So for now the choice is between the 116200 DJ or the Discovery..I think. I'm leaning more towards the DJ for a couple of reasons, its going to be about $100 cheaper and also because I have plans to get the Ebel BTR (yellow hands) and can't help but think that the Discovery will be too similar to the BTR, even though the dial color is different.

The VCO white dial is another one I've been thinking about, this watch looks amazing in the pictures and Genta's design is timless.

(Sigh) I don't know.. what do you guys think?

I have a gen Explorer II with white dial, and I love it. Many of the active members have a gen or rep in their collection too. Very classy.

  9. I bought my first rep in HK in 1986 for about $20, there weren't any good reps then, but they were fun, and $800 seemed like alot of money back then for a gen rolex sub or gmt. The quality today is miles ahead of "the good old days", and approaches gen quality in appearance and materials for a small fraction of the gen cost. So enjoy the fun of having 1960's dollars to acquire timepieces of timeless design. Recently saw an original ad for a 1963 Navitimer cosmonaut for APOA members for $86!!! As a comparison, I spent over $8000 modding my 386 computer in the early 1990's, if only I had spent it on gen watches.
