  1. How about these? Breguet 3239: Breguet Transatlantique: Cartier Pasha Seatimer: Dewitt Academia 1940: Patek (fantasy) Good luck with your quest.
  2. Rolex. I used not to be Rollie person, but just had another fantastic one, the GMTIIC. $130 from Timesshop.
  3. For your information. Hope it is nothing serious.
  4. It looks to me like there is a pusher on one of the crowns which is not on the old version. That might be to jump the timezone or the time. However the position of the city-wheel suggest that it does not click into place. That is a problem on the old version, which tends to slide. As to other improvements there is now a serial no, which on the old version was 000.000. Also I guess that this one is made of real titanium, whereas the old version was some kind of greyed steel. Finally the old version could not be made water-proof. Hopefully that has been fixed as this is one watch that should be able to swim.
  5. That's right. However I think I have reached a point where I find 36mm very small. So for me it is a case of rep being better than Gen.
  6. On the older Rep version the time and the place were set separately. I wonder if they have found a way of replicating the Gen so that they set in one operation.
  7. There are an awful lot of almost identical, but not quite versions of this watch. Look here: http://www.kronosclub.com/ROC/
  8. Thanks for this one. It provides clear and simple explanations on the various Chrono options for Gens. I am not sure if there are functioning flyback reps, but there are definitely no functioning rattrapante reps. But they do sometimes have a lookalike pusher to keep up the illution. To me those are the worst kind of replicas. There are no bigger tells than watches without the functionality they claim to have. As to Reps,
  9. Whatever you do with this watch, do not buy the standard automatic version. It has very serious problems with the movement, so pretty as it is, it is also very likely to fail. There are two alternatives: Concepta's franken which is very expensive and quartz which is less accurate. Both work though.
  10. Ouuutsch!! That must have hurt. Hope you are OK now. I bet you will pay much more attention to the shape of watches in future. Because I cannot imagine you will stop wearing them ....
  11. The first one is a fantasy version. It does not resemble any known model from Breguet but has a general resemblance to the Classique line. Where it is completely wrong is the black colour which to my knowledge is only used for the less expensive XX line. The second one is a pretty good rep of an older model (Gen on top, rep underneath - (sorry I don't know how to size the pics to match)): For a more complete review, look here: http://repgeek.com/showthread.php?t=77662&highlight=breguet Good luck with your first purchase, and let us know (with pictures) what you buy.
  12. You have such a nice combo. This version also seems not to suffer from the many typos on the back of other FM reps. The strap has done a huge deal to improve it. Did you do anything else, like AR or lume treatment?
  13. Nice pictures of a good looking watch, but the back calls it a minute repeater, which it certainly is not. Non functioning buttons and false claims are among the biggest tells on a rep. It is a silly mistake and not acceptable at this price level, if at all. Thus unfortunately this one is off the list for me.
  14. How is the quality of the leather? So far my experience with rep straps has been very negative. Is this the exception?
  15. The functions are almost irrelevant on this one. This configuration is frequently used on 21J watches pretending to be chronos. There are few very easy tells if you are looking for fakes from a distance. This is one.
  16. The difference is that they were work instruments then and would never be worn as daily wear. Next fashion item, a drill???
  17. Just had a look at Timesshop and found a number of promising looking Chopard watches. Personally my instruction is to find one which has no ticking hand and probably no bling. Liked the Gold Cartier Ballon Bleu but was turned off by it saying Stainless Steel on the back. As to PP24, any experience with the straps?
  18. Hold back guys. No need for flaming here, the point is a valid one. Yes, hours are spent making reviews, but each review is re-inventing the wheel when it comes to format. Perhaps it would be useful to generate a format if issues that are relevant and of interest. And I agree that the basic construction of the watch should be top of the list, while it is some reviews remains unmentioned. Clear examples are water proof testing, time-keeping, lume and detailing such as depth of engravings. It is clear that some are much better made than others. As a specific example I have a beautifully looking Cartier Pasha which should be a proper sports watch, but which cannot be water proofed. Big negative and not an obvious point unless highlighted. To have these covered by some standard format would be highly useful for anyone considering a purchase, not just a noob. It would still be possible to put a personal stamp on the reviews. As a check list for issues to cover it is not a bad idea. How to get this right may take some thinking and discussion, but it is a good idea.
  19. I am a Geek and I am here. Please be welcome to this forum!!! To answer your question, the difference is the so-called stacking of the hands. The expensive one has the hands in the same stacking order as the Gen, the cheaper does not. The consensus here seems to be that the cheap version is better than the expensive one, and that the visual difference due to the stacking is very small. Perhaps use the search function and see if you can find more information about the problems experienced with the Correct Stacking.
  20. This is actually pretty interesting. Not long ago it was widely announced that this particular watch could only be bought after a careful vetting by Patek which included an interview with the potential owner to assess his suitability to acquire this masterpiece. Now it seems that the ultra exclusivity seems to be reduced to mere mammon....
  21. +1 Although I agree with Plaif that it is not worth it to send it back, unfortunately that is the only thing that will make the dealers source better watches. As long as they can sell crap, and we put up with it, they will. Having said that, buying AP is an expensive affair, even when you go the rep-route. But then you are buying into a top luxury brand. Once serviced (and probably at the same time) you might want to have the watch AR treated and re-lumed. I have had both done to mine and I really think it makes the watch. Consider that the Gen costs about $15,000. The serviced and modified rep will be a fantastic watch at less than 10%, but it will serve you just as well.
  22. A quartz must never say Automatic. It is such an obvious tell. Rather say Quartz or nothing at all. Also do not forget that IWC used to make many quartz models. When quartz originally came out they were at the forefront due to the reliability and accuracy. Only when competition from the Far East started to bite did they go back to only selling automatics.
