My home town is the architect of the modern world as we know it. Oh yes, the cradle of the industrial revolution, the birthplace of the atomic age and the first working computer and the first trades union. Not to mention the music! Anyone care to guess?

I agree with Tribal..... that 'electic' blue is nasty.

Fantastic work. Much appreciated I'm sure by all. Can't wait for the full review. Was not going to buy one of these SD's but think I might change my mind now! Thankyou 'themuck' for your hard work, you're a star!

Fantastic. Wear it well. I hate you.

Just beautiful. I can honestly say if I had put that together I think I would prefer it to the gen. You must get a wonderful feeling every time you look at it. Marvellous work. -
If I remember rightly the film is dedicated to Mrs. Turgoose - I assume that is the boys real life mother (who died) good move by Mr. Meadows, all that real emotion already on tap.

Aaaah, search hard enough and you will at last find common ground. I saw This Is England earlier this year. As I have previously mentioned I watch films at home through a projector with a fairly sophisticated sound system - it is the closest thing I can get to the cinema experience at home. Anyway, This Is England - very good film indeed. I would like to see Shane Meadows tackle a subject that is outside his comfort zone. If he can do this and make a good job of whatever he choses I think he has the potential to become a seriously good film maker. Oh, I have a dvd copy of The Lives of Others but have not watched it yet. Thanks for the other recommendations I will put in the effort to see them. By the way I was driving in London the other day and was behind a white rolls royce with the registration '007' a friend said it was Roger Moore's car. Does anyone know if this is true?

If 'American Gangter' is classed as an exceptionally good film in the current climate then clearly I am not missing much by not seeing many modern films. I watched this last night (admittedly on a plasma screen - so I am only half qualified to comment) and what can I say. It's a fairly good film. Not great - by a long chalk, but acceptable. Will I remember it in ten years as being something special - probably not. Will you? Far too many people who enjoy watching dvd's in the comfort of their own home think that their opinion is valid purely because they have seen lots of dvd's. The same is true of music, some people who listen to the radio all day think they are experts in music. Of course one usually only realises ones ignorance when it is pointed out - usually by another person, and even then it takes a fair amount of humility to admit ones shortcomings and that often makes people uncomfortable and is therefore avoided. Finally I would like to make one point. If you have seen a film on a small screen with a small audience (I am specifically talking about a domestic environment) you have not viewed it properly and are not qualified to comment with certainty. If that film experience is not significantly altered by seeing it in a proper environment ie a decent sized cinema then the film has in some way failed. Try watching 2001: A Space Odyssey on a mobile 'phone - get my drift?

I have direct experience of having a watch modded by RBJ (who is banned from this forum by the way). Check out the thread about my DRSD 1665 then decide if you want to use him. -
He was rather good in Educating Rita as well. Not a lot of people know that.

Docblackrock - I said "not so easy" that is not the same as "hard". Feel free to comment but please don't put words in my mouth. -
I think I know how to solve this. The problem as I see it is one of choice, and you my friend have too wide a choice. Now I can't stand to see a fellow human suffer in such a way so I am prepared - just this once - to help you out and thus relieve your pain. I will allow you to sell me one of the pieces. The Daytona for example - you know it will do you good, if the temptation is not there then you will be half way to being cured. Sure you may feel a little withdrawal at first but, believe me, after a while it will get better and you will no longer face the dilemma you describe. And to think I will have actually have paid you to cure you, where else can you get an offer like that! I know, I know, you're probably thinking that this gesture is just too kind but honestly don't worry about it, I am by nature a generous person and I derive alot of pleasure from seeing my fellow man returned to a life of comfort and health. So go on, do the right thing, you know in your heart of hearts it makes sense and I have only got your wellbeing in mind. After all, what are friends for?

With great regret....I'm giving up selling replicas..!

Never bought a watch from you. Emailed you once, never got a reply - apparently that's normal. However, I can honestly say I will miss you. I have laughed a great deal at some of your posts and could not have agrred more with one of your lengthy ones about guns. Thanks for all the entertainment. Don't be a stranger -
Not you Doc, was referring to vbarretts dislike of 'Little Miss Sunshine'. Will use quotations in future.
-
Oh dear. I am with David Lean when it comes to film watching - there is only one way, and that is through a projector, there is something about that beam of light going over your head that makes the experience magical. TV's? Not acceptable.
-
The fact that you didn't like it doesn't make it a bad film. I didn't like 'The Third Man'. I know you're not saying it was a bad film but the implication is there. Care to back the statement up? Go on.... I dare you....
-
OMG a real live film critic! I am a real live amateur film critic and can appreciate what you say about indies. I was working in Ireland some time ago and found the Irish film institute just round the corner from where I was staying and saw that "Little Miss Sunshine" was showing. At the time I had not heard of it, as I said previously I have become very jaded with the cinema after having grown up during the last great period of Hollywood film making (the '70's) and thought, what the hell, I'll give it a try. Well, you know the rest.... very good film indeed.

@ vbarrett: I was worried that your liking of NL was going to spill over into the Jamie O, Gordon R situation and that you would favour JO. Please accept my humblest apologies. I underestimated you. For the record I have not seen Anthony Bourdain on TV (or in the flesh) but Kitchen Confidential is a superb book.

At this moment 5 people are reading this thread. It's nice to know I'm not the only numpty in the world.

Yet again the obsession with guns never ceases to amaze me. Just for the hell of it I'd like to add a couple of things to the debate. There are plenty of people in the UK with guns. I think what makes a difference is that guns are not so easy to get hold of. I am not an expert on the subject but I know you have paperwork to do. Gun cabinets have to be inspected etc etc. As a consequence there are far less guns in circulation in the UK and the link between that and the (relatively) low death rate by firearms cannot be denied. I don't think any sane person cannot therefore conclude that the fewer guns there are in circulation in a society the fewer deaths by guns you will have. As an ardent Brit basher (I feel I have the right to be as I am one) I have to admit that it is one of our greatest achievements that our police do not routinely carry guns. It is the ease of access to guns that is the problem. We have all I'm sure experienced moments when interacting with other human beings that arguments have ensued and tempers have been lost. This is normal. When you throw easily available (and portable) lethal weapons into that equation the result is well... potentially lethal. (Not rocket science is it). Therefore my argument is a simple one. If you make guns more difficult to get hold of, less people will die by them. I would actually argue that less people would die overall. As for countries where there are lots of guns in circulation? I'm sorry but you are already f****d. You can not wind the clock back. But when others point out that this availability is not necessarily the best course of action a society may have chosen don't get all defensive about it, just admit that it was a mistake, one that can't be helped, one that happened for a myriad of reasons and smile sweetly and go about your business which preferably does not include blowing your neighbours brains out because his dog pooped on your lawn. -
OK enough already. Nigella Lawson is one of the most annoying women in the world. Fact. She cannot cook her way out of a paper bag. Fact. She is a dog. Fact. I don't know what Jay Leno was thinking but I wish he had used the carving knife to remove her (empty) head. @ vbarrett. Yes, one of those men is annoying and the other is brilliant, of course we all know that the brilliant one is not Jamie Oliver. Fact. Anyone who disagrees with me is wrong. Fact.

Don't really watch modern films. Too much rubbish to filter my way through. However, if I were stranded on a desert island and could only take one film with me it would probably be 'Kind Hearts and Coronets' one of the few films that I envy people who haven't seen it because when they do (and they most certainly should) they are going to get that first time viewing feeling that I will never again have.
