thorne awesome man !! thank you for the insight on the crown guard. yea its a vietnam case so i suspect ill have to do a bit of reshaping on the lugs and the CGs.

when you say "Lugs will need reshaping too, the upper edge of the lugs should slope down from the crown towards the tips as below." are you referring to the area i have with the green or the red, case lugs or crown guard lugs ? I notice the top of the vietnam case has the guards very chunky and rounded much like the ceramic subs.   imageproxy.jpg.b090068d406cd76e4d7dc46c9e6a0b5a.jpg

I meant the edge of the lug which is between the red square and the green rectangle.

If you flip the case upside down, the lower and upper edges should form a ‘canoe’ shape.

If you flip the Viet case upside down, you’ll see the edge along the bezel ring is not curved and is quite flat.

2. Hey fellas, looking to get some opinions here on a crystal for my 1665 build.
Bascically im looking for the dome that doesnt look like a top hat. I have found a few genuine units, but they are service crystals and it appears they are the top hat look, tall an flatish, i dont like that. what are the options out there ? clark ? is there a certian gen i should be looking at for that low domed look that you see most DRSDs with ?

also been hunting for a while for a side shot of the CGs on these DRSDs and its hard to get them from the bottom or side on to get the profile. I also searched for reshaping tips on the vietnam cases and cant really find anything. Id send it out for re shaping but im good with doing it myself, plus im too excited to get this built.

Hi C,

Here’s a photo of the Clark superdome T39 on mine. I went for a new aftermarket crystal for better water resistance, compared to a NOS gen plexi which would have close to 20 years old.

Are you using a Viet case?

1665 CGs must be ovals, the shape is specific to the 1665, you’ll see clear examples on HQ Milton.

Here’s what it should look like:

Lugs will need reshaping too, the upper edge of the lugs should slope down from the crown towards the tips as below. The Viet case is a straight line along the upper edge of the lugs (no slope).

3. Ruby is awesome.

Quick non nonsense comms, and very prompt.

Get a case from her, then send it to a modder for casework. A 50 year old watch should look like one - edges softened etc, and not mint like it just came off the assembly line. There are modders in Europe and US who can do that for you.

If you get a case from Phong (he has the best lug engraving, there is none better) you still need to send it to a modder to get the case shaped, and softening done.

The 1665 lugs are unique, and there’s very few modders who can do that well: try Rolojack in the US, or Tripdog and Kilowattore (from RWI) in EU.

Agree with Jackflash, deal with MQ only if you have no choice. But I have to say, for vintage Rolex dials, his are as close to perfect as they come.

4. Forgot to update.

This is the dial I finally selected. Had to go through a few dials before I chose this one. If ordering from MQ make sure you ask for clear high definition photos for QC.

White spots and etc are dust and lint on the dial.

The photos on MQ's website are different from the dial he will send. I don't know why he hasn't updated his photos on the site. For example the GW rail dial photo on his website is the exact same photo on NDT's website. It's not a similar photo, it's the exact same photo down to the defects on the dial. The coronet is wrong, dial script font/color is wrong, spacing all wrong.

Now the QC pics and the actual dial he sent me are 95% close to gen. The open 6 GW rail dial version. I am amazed at how close it is to gen.

Here is a comparison photo, gen on top, this MQ dial below.

5. Yes, I can agree Ruby's great to deal with. Got the case for my 1665 build from her.

But she didn't have any GWSD dials in stock, and it'll take her 4 weeks to make me one.

She can't do hands.

I've sent this dial back to MQ for a replacement.
