  1. So my current favorite watch is my BK TW sub (WM9 dial). I am going to assume that it is pretty accurate to gen in size. It supposedly takes gen parts. Now when I first got it I will admit it seemed quite small, but then my BK DSSD was my only other Rolex. Now it seems so perfectly sized that the DSSD seems stupidly big (and gets no wrist time now).

Today I ran into at least three people wearing subs. Two on my flight to Miami from Newark NJ. And one at Whole Foods. All of those subs looked bigger than mine - I'd guess 41mm. I got a close look at one in particular because it was on the wrist of my wife's friend's husband. Not a rep wearer. It definitely was a sub, cyclops with date. And definitely wasn't a ceramic bezel. The CGs were pointed like on a 16610 - not those barrel shoulders like the 116610. But it looked bigger than mine.

Does Rolex make a bigger sub? Am I crazy? Is my sub wrong and too small?

    Wondering...

  2. I have taken my BK DSSD down 25 feet without any issue. I don't think you can figure it out in the sink though. I know BK does a good job reseating and greasing the gaskets which may not have been done well coming out of the factory.

As a beginner diver I'd think you wouldn't be venturing much below 100 feet. Without decompressing you can spend 7 minutes at 110 feet. Makes for a short boring dive in the dark.

  3. It's actually kinda sad that now we believe that anything that is not in-house is considered cheap and terrible because of ETA's dominance. In traditional Swiss watchmaking, it is actually common to rely on ebauches made by specialist companies. Even Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin used a Valjoux and Lemania ebauches for their chronographs until very recently. You might also be surprised that they have used, in the past, Piaget ebauches for their basic caliber movements. Wathcmaking was defined by the ability of a watchmaking house to finish/polish ebauches to complete movements. I would very much prefer that the in-house = higher quality marketing gimmick to go away, it's killing tradition...But such is life, ETA pretty much bought almost all ebauche making companies and asserted its dominance with cheaply designed movements during the quartz crisis.

thx for reading my rant =D

You have a very good point. The IWC Il Destriero Scafusia Grand Complication in its day was considered to be the most complicated watch movement in the world. And it was based on a Valjoux 7750 ebauche.

  4. Personally I went with 27/22 though standard Rads are 27/20 for deployant.

I had one made in 27/22 for deployant much prefer it to the one that came with it.

I also have a 26/26 OEM JV with deployant for it and as The Bear says it dont make any real difference :thumbsupsmileyanim:

So I'll pass on the 26/22 and wait or go custom for 27/22

And I agree 27/20 too skinny despite being deployant compatible.

  5. Buy one of Taka's pre-AR'd crystals ... swap it with the one you send to Chief ... replace it when Chief's comes back ... rinse and repeat for the St. Ex ... sell the Taka when you are done ... :)

Great idea - is the AR from Taka as good as Chief's?

  6. So I decided to just go with the cartel 3717 instead of a heavily modded one. Because of that I'm getting the 01 an the 09 St. Exupery as well. Now in the future I want to do chief's AR. Can the 3717 crystal be removed without taking out the movement from the front? Or do you have to press through the case? And if you remove your crystal to send it off for many weeks, what do you do with your crystalless watch?

  7. They are a very good rep for the money , sunken DW & position aside, most people are really positive about these watches , 168$ is a pretty good buy

The too close together subdials look terrible in my opinion. That makes it a non-starter for me. The sunken datewheel is pretty bad too.

  8. So I have fallen in love with the Portuguese 7 day 5001 watch. I just tried on a gen at an AD and it has the perfect heft and size. It uses the same 5000 movement as the 5002 and 5004 and seems to be in the same case as a 5004. Date and seconds in the same spot.

So how can I get a 5001 rep that is decently accurate. I know it cannot have a display back since no one has repped the caliber 5000. I'd even love a build, maybe with a gen dial?

  9. Call it your first, fun, modding project :D

Oh....and welcome to the forum! Everyone has made some sort of mistake on a rep purchase - myself included

    Thanks.

It may come in handy as a modding watch. Maybe I can use it to practice removing and setting hands - won't mind scratching that dial!
