  1. The fellas involved in the book are quite interesting. I singlehandedly blame them for the insane price inflation of V72-based Daytonas - well, almost singlehandedly. Naughty naughty Italians...
  2. Very nice assortment of fine watches. I am glad that the Rollie obsession has bitten you! Cheers
  3. His prices are INSANE. He does have a few unobtainable items - those might be worth it if you are restoring a genuine OEM vintage piece. Otherwise, I'd look elsewhere. There are a few members who have bought from him in the past with success. There are more hordes out in the world - fret not, my watchhunting freaks.
  4. Quality is sketchy at best when it comes to assembly and parts selection. I've had quite a few crappy parts that I've been less than satisfied with. The good news is that my DW days are essentially over now that I've got a few 6263/5's with the approrpriate movements in 'em. Cheers
  5. I own 3 at the moment but this does not include rep watch parts.
  6. For the record, watches must be 200m proof for any sorta jumping into the water and swimming. 150m proof and you're taking a risk. And... Pressure tests are meaningless unless you test for a MINIMUM of 3 minutes.
  7. It's funny. Me & Ubi have this conversation a couple times a year... We are going to be ascending to a new plateau where aftermarket parts will be the only method of keeping the older pieces alive. It is a shame. The funny part about all of this is that Rolex remains on the forefront of fighting replicas - soon all the vintage pieces will be replica-part-powered. There is some sorta twisted irony in all of this. Anyhow, I don't think that the Richmont Group cares one way or the other. I worry though. My watchmaker is having a harder & harder time getting parts from Rolex. And my contacts at various watch supply wholesale businsesses are looking grim: over the past 4+ years, they have less & less parts. My favorite & local supply shop no longer supports Rolex. I bought the remainder of OEM bezel inserts lfrom them last year. We will be ok for a while, but in the long run... Who knows. I better start snatching up those JLC WWWs, Longines Czech Pilots, RN SM300s, Blancpain Milspec-1's before the prices leave our solar system. Rolex has already afforded me some great investments, but no support = no love.
  8. I have 2 Marathon military watches that are quartz. Yes, they are accurate. But my favorite accurate watch is the old venerable tuning fork Accutron watch. Mechanical and really really accurate. They are super accurate it is mind boggling.
  9. Wow, that's great! You gonna wear a PAM rep?
  10. Hers's an old & small pic of my '67 1675 with the small GMT hand.
  11. You bring up an interesting point: I wonder if my crown and tube are the same as one of the pre-5512/3 models? I'm going to have to find out. Please post some pics of the 5513 when u get it. And, why not post some pics of the 5512, too
  12. Wow, congrats on the 5513! Great investment! The crown is the original 1st incarnate of crowns used on 5512 and 5513. Rolex used caches of parts as they saw fit, thus certain discrepancies are bound to arise. For example, my 1675 is from '67 but it has a small GMT hand. How is this possible? Well, for one, I am the 2nd owner. The first owner was my grandpa. He bought it from Rolex Tokyo new in box. The watch was never serviced until I got it. And Rolex BH verified that mine came with the small GMT hand (rare on this late of a 1675, but true). The small hand used on mine is a perfect example of ROlex using up freshly discovered caches of parts. The same can be said about certain dial repalcements during service. Anyhow, the issue of my 5513 crown is somewhat of a mystery. There are plenty of collectors on TZ who have the same crown on their 5512/3's. I am not alone. I would like to solve this mystery though (at least, I'd like to get the parts numbers for both the crown and the tube). I just wish that I was not dumb enough to have thrown out the parts number for the NOS crown when I bought it. ARRRRGH!!! There were many variations of crown markings as you know. This adds somewhat to the confusion. My 1675 Twinlock crown has a line under it.
  13. I'm gonna have a few Happy New Beers tonight with my buddy from Homer. Cheers!!!!
  14. Wow. Here in Cali, that would never fly (but wayward bullets do).
  15. There are some great points hidden amongst the lot; certainly a few to put into one's pipe & smoke. Cheers
  16. That is an interesting find. Thanks for posting. Cheers
  17. Amazing article - great post. There was a brief sequence on some History Channel show a few months ago about this machine. The actual show theme was about the library at Alexandria. They went through various inventions that were 'conceived' or at least documented in the that great library. One of the items was this calculator. Apparently, it was used to calculate distances, perform trigonometric additions for architectual purposes, astronomical calculations, etc. Fascinating. It's a damn shame that Marcus Antoninus set that library ablaze to flush out Julius Ceasar. The world would've been ultra different if that blaze did not destroy 99.9% of the ancient canon of literature. Cheers
  18. Nice lookin' beast - enjoy!
  19. An RN Omega SM300 would be nice - preferrably the first incarnate with the half metal half bakelite thin bezel ring. But... How about... Drumroll please... The damn 1655??? Ok, forget it. I forgot that there is some sorta unspoken rule stating that a 1:1 1655 rep will never exist.
  20. Avitt, that is funny stuff. I've often thought that the many 'shady' vintage watch sellers on eBay utilize a tumbler of sorts. I' ve seen too many suckers bid high on fake items that are deemed authentic due to some sort of uniform patina. Cheers
  21. Love it! Shame on Rolex for not supporting caliber 1030 anymore.
  22. Wonderful project. I can't wait to get started on mine. Seeing your watch has pushed me to finish mine up. Wow!!! Cheers
  23. Wow, thank you Avitt and Vacuum! Once again, this thread reminds me of what a classy place RWG (II) is. No wonder I've been a member for a few years now - it is because of the great people, the vast plethora of knowledge and wonderful friends that I have made along the way. Cheers
