  1. Thanks GenRep but I'm across the pond in England and don't much fancy getting socked with customs duty, silly shipper's handling fees and Value Added Tax at 17.5%. A reasonably new/mint LV goes for between 2,700 to 3,000 Sterling over here, with the higher prices being the retail ones as you might expect. Unfortunately buying from within the EU is no longer a good option either as the pound has crashed against the Euro. However, I think I might just play it safe. The discussion here has been really helpful. I have a couple of other options and they will likely only put me a hundred or so over what I reckon the auction will end at. Don't fancy being burned and I can't afford to be...

    Thanks again guys!

  2. Greetings Folks,

I wondered if any of you good people could take a look at an LV on the Bay and tell me if anything shouts out "rep" rather than "gen"?! I'm keen to make a bid on it, having test driven a Noob for a while.

    Sub LV

Time is of the essence on this one and really appreciate whatever help you can give!

    Many thanks,

    Paul

  3. My gen Breitling chrono has non-screw pushers and is rated to 10atm/100m. tbh it doesn't feel right that the pushers still work under water, but I have used them to reset at 22 metres with no problems.

I on the other hand had a Tag diver chrono in the early 90's which I took diving (no idea what model it was). Damn thing was about as water resistant as a piece of blotting paper. Went back to be re-sealed twice before I gave up on it completely. I've sneered at T-H's ever since, which is probably most unjust.

Excellent thread. Funny because I popped in today to look up this very subject...

  4. That is a 100% rep.

This guy has previously put this up on eBay and I reported it. eBay did not remove it however so they must think it's real. Idiots.

Yeah, I just reported it too. Ebay seems to be useless at policing itself though. Unless they stand to lose out! Someone over on the IWC board also reported this guy. Frustrating that the seller remains a Powerseller with 99.whatever% positive rating...

Thanks very much to you and all the rest of you folks for setting me right on this one!

    Cheers,

    Paul

  5. Hi Guys,

Decided recently to take the plunge, re-mortgage my mother-in-law, and buy a gen Portuguese. I've stayed away from the otherwise lovely reps because of the potential for movt problems. So, I found a blue faced version in the US but am worried for two reasons. The first is that I had not heard of a blue faced version that wasn't a Laureus version (which has the detailed case back engraving; this only has the serial number on the caseback 2678159). The second is that the movt looks cheap and nasty. So I'm either looking at quite a rare and cool original or a rep... Any ideas?

Edit: Looks like it's definitely a rep. The serial number is the same one used on reps and looking at that movt and comparing to a gen, there's no comparison... :(

  6. Hope this question is OK to ask here; I trust lots of you guys and don't know the gen boards at all...

I've got a gen Rolex 16234 which I want to sell or trade for a gen used sub 16610. I've found watchfinder.co.uk who have made a provisional offer but wondered if anyone had any pointers to good European based enthusiast sites where I might be able to buy/sell privately? Can't seem to find any by Googling.

Btw, my recently arrived TKK Noob convinced me that I wanted to swap; lovely rep for such a low cost.

    Thanks!

  7. That's what I do, darling.
    :o:p

So, I got home and dug out the order confirmation. My bad. I ordered the wrong size (26). Did think about squishing (as one does) but Elliot, being a fine guy, and the strap being mint, I'm just gonna send the sucker back for one the right size.

BTW, in case you didn't know, TC is having a Thanksgiving sale at the mo'...

Thanks for helping me with a fairly daft thing and happy turkey day, if you're doing that thing.

  8. I ordered a couple of lovely M-P straps a while ago from Time Connection and they've been sitting, somewhat impatiently, on a shelf awaiting my first PAM. I just received my TWP 111H (I hope to take some pics and post on it soon) and the Mario Paci Special Edition "Allora a Ora" in Senape fits beautifully and looks the biz. The MP XIII "3646" in Nero however seems too wide for the lugs (both bits).

I thought that I ordered both the same size. Did I perhaps order incorrectly? Is the strap accidentally too large?

Or should I just stop being a limey wimp and jam those suckers in there?!

Really lovely straps, by the way.

    gracias,

    Khumz

  9. Congrats on the job, Pugwash. I too vote for the 3717 for reasons given by others. I don't think many folks will even know what it is but it won't be a "look at me, look at me" watch and neither will it be a vanilla jobbie. OTOH, like the sage VB says (I think), you could go with the watch which feels the most "like you" (the UPO?).

  10. So, I've been eagerly awaiting my modded TWP 111 and apparently it's ready to rock and roll, with the exception of the palp crown. Question is, should I hold out for T to take delivery of some (it has taken 3 months in the past for them to be ready) or ask him to ship it to me "as is" with just the other mods? (Have to say that had I known there would be a good chance I'd have to wait that long, I might have waited for a nicely modded one to come up second+ hand on the forum...)

    What do you guys think?

    Greetings.

  11. What is your title? Cheers

Dude, that's asking what my name is and I'm not comfortable with giving that out here. I have however over the years been given many titles by friends, colleagues, enemies and complete stangers... ;)

I think it would be cool if we felt somewhat like the Elizabethans did about blokes and jewelry without getting hung up about sexual orientation, class, and other stuff. I lived in the States for quite a few years and loved that it was more possible to do your own thing without running into as many judgement boundaries as seem to exist in England. As a bud of mine was fond of saying, "Joke 'em if they can't take a f**k." On the flip side I also recognise that people really like feeling that they're part of a clan/tribe. Part of that is saying what you are but just as much, if not more sometimes, is saying what you're not. One theory about the origin of some Jewish law was that it in part arose in distinction to folks like the Canaanites, who for example celebrated one major religious festival with kid goat cooked in milk.

  12. I usually wear my family gold signet ring. My dad has the older version, which is vast, lightly decorated with floral swirls on the large surfaces (which would otherwise be empty) and solid silver. His, which he never wears, was made in the 1600's.

Until a few years ago I often wore a captive bead earring (quite a thick gauge and black) and a platinum wedding band on the continental side (because of the signet ring on my left hand). I divorced and no longer wear it but still love that ring. My current partner isn't so keen to see it around and I must work out what to do with it.

The crowd that I grew up with frown on jewelry (other than signet rings but only if you have a title). Wedding rings were not the done thing either. It's pretty funny really as the moment you step into the realm of formal occassions (black tie, etc.) you start seeing fanatastic cufflinks, shirt studs and a range of ornate accessories (lighters, cigarette cases, swords...!).

A previous wedding ring saved my finger and possilby more. I was on a yacht and I was manually guiding the lowering of the anchor when my hand got trapped between the chain and the thing the chain runs over. The ring stopped my hand being crushed. When I got free, the ring had been squashed into an oval and I had to get it off painfully fast to prevent it cutting off circulation.
