  1. :tu: Shovel?? Nahhhhhhhhhhh it's only a mile across to the other side!

Awesome shot! My wife and I are going to AK (from Boston) for the first time this summer....and we're completely stoked! Flying into Anchorage, renting a car, driving up to Denali NP, camper bus to Wonder Lake...camp a few nights, on to Fairbanks for a few days, then back to Whittier and sail down to Vancouver. It's gonna be a quick 2 week trip, but we're really looking forward to it. You've certainly got some beautiful country up there!

  2. i actually really like the looks of it....if it truly is going to be released by panerai (according to trusty's description), even better. anybody have a clue the story on this one (ie. will it / has it been released)?

super cool looking watch...mini-me Fiddy! Definitely fantasy though...there's no gen 44mm Fiddy

  3. The watch is very nice. Doesn’t look like a gen 127, but it’s a cool looking piece. Box is also nice. The emblems are correct, the hinges are correct, the black, mat color of the inside is correct, the magnetic latch/clasp looks good, and the aesthetic is appropriate. The only two possible discrepancies I can see are the color of the wood (seems too light, but might just be the result of photo exposure), and the black felt-like material that covers the watch (the piece with Officine Panerai on it). I can’t put my finger on what’s funky about it, just doesn’t look exactly right. The only other thing is that it’s not the right box for a Fiddy…special edition boxes are almost twice the size of the standard ones…this one is standard, Fiddy is special edition.

Regarding your question about modding this one or getting a new one, depends on whether you like THIS watch or not. If it fits well and you’re happy with it, keep it and get something different. If you’re looking for the best possible Fiddy rep, don’t spend the effort and $$ on this one…start over and get the best and latest model from one of the dealers here…nothing’s perfect, but some of them are getting pretty darn close.

    Cheers!

  4. ATM is atmosphere, as in atmospheric pressure. Scientifically I think it’s a lot more complicated than this, but for the sake of diving, I believe 1 ATM = 10 meters, meaning a watch that is rated to 10 ATM could theoretically withstand the pressure at 300 ft below the surface….or, maybe, if 1 ATM is sea level, then 10 ATM is actually 270 feet…I guess…who knows...

  5. What's this guy talking about?

"you can also spot that it´s a fake if you take a closer look at the gap between the bezel edge and the case edge, it´s too big... and the finish of the movement plates..."

The movement fit and finish I get, but is he saying that the rep's bezel doesn't fit correctly or thatte case is too wide? Is this the 581 case problem everyone talks about...If so, I've never been able to see it w/ my eyes.

I have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about, so take this with a grain of salt, but if you’re looking at the watch face on, check out the amount of space (case) on the right hand side, between the edge of the bezel and the crown. On the rep, there’s a noticeable gap, on the gen, the bezel looks like it extends almost right up to the very edge of the case. I compared a lot of pics after reading, "you can also spot that it´s a fake if you take a closer look at the gap between the bezel edge and the case edge, it´s too big” for the first time, and although the difference is marginal, the bezel on the reps really does seem to be smaller (unless the case is bigger).

Regarding case 581, I’d imagine that if it’s a problem with this one, it’s a problem with all of them. David doesn’t seem to have the problem (as far as I can see) with his case 117.

  6. Upgrade your membership to "member", and check out the dealer review section for davidsen. You will be able to find out more info on his product quality.

As far as the movement goes, check out the how-to / watch repair section and you can find out EVERYTHING you need to know about each movement, including when it needs to be serviced, etc.

Lastly, use a search, cause I know there has been a lot of debate one when to service movements, you can find out a lot that way! :thumbsupsmileyanim:

    Regards..

Word! Thanks for the heads up Dak. I paid for the membership upgrade yesterday, but haven't heard anything yet...paypal prolly still processing the payment or something. I'll definitely check out the dealer reviews as soon as I gain access. With regard to servicing movements, I'm all too familiar with the protocol when it comes to Gens, have just been reading a lot about ‘dry’ gears and dirt/lint in rep movements , and wasn’t sure if it’s a problem across the board, or if it’s dealer/manufacturer specific…I’ll look into it. Cheers!

  7. I’m leaning toward the new Davidsen, but my question is does it have the ‘broad dagger’ swan’s neck? I can’t tell from the pic that’s listed. Also, anyone prefer Andrew’s, or Eddie’s, or Angus’ most recent 127? Price not really an issue (cause even w/ a Greg Crazy Horse I’m still at less than 5% of OEM). Aside from the really obvious things to look for like proper engraving, swan’s neck, cannon pin, dagger, the Davidsen seems to be the most accurate with regard to the AR layer, lume, and the overall fit and finish (I have noticed on some of the reps that there’s just too big a gap between the edge of the bezel and the edge of the case)…

So anyway…if the Davidsen doesn’t come with the dagger, is there someone here who has the part and can do the mod? I’ve heard awesome things about ‘Finepics’, but that dude seems really busy already…

Finally, I’ve never had a rep before and I am no watchdoctor…will I need to send it in for a day at the spa (cleaning, lube, calibration) right away, or can I wing it for a while?

    Cheers and thanks!

  8. In my search for my first gen Panerai I've spend many hours looking around.

Should I go for the Historic or Submersible...

I can take a PAM 112i BNIB not from the AD for €2700 , do you guys think this is a good deal?

The reason for having an open caseback is that the reps are easy to spot the flaws...dagger, engraving/blue colour of "OFFICINE PANERAI" and quality of the CDG.

    Maikel, 2700 EUR is a lot of money (over 3500 USD). The 2006 retail price for a 112i is $3650. If you're not getting the piece from an AD anyway, why not do one of the following;

    - Get one that has been slightly used for well under retail ie: http://www.network54.com/Forum/353390/thre...i+112+Near+Mint

    - Get one that is BNIB from a non AD ie: http://www.network54.com/Forum/353390/thre...amp%3B+Pam197+I.

    - or pay the full price and get one (and the FULL Panerai experience) from an AD

By the way, if you're looking to get an OEM PAM, don't worry about it being a Rep...buy the SELLER, not the watch!

    Good luck!!!

  9. yeah those guys are pretty harsh! keep them here please!

AMEN Flav....although brand new here, I have spent A LOT!!! of time on 'risti (mostly lurking) over the past few years, and those guys get rabid at the very mention (let alone flaunting) of reps…they’re the most knowledgeable and dedicated OEM PAM freaks in the WORLD, and they take their watches very seriously. I am forever indebted to them for the community they have created, but don’t mess with them when it comes to Reps…they have absolutely NO tolerance / sense of humor when it comes to these things...

  10. the pams started getting good almost 2 yrs ago. if you go with chrono models (no recessed pin) or specialty crown models 1950 1950 flyback regatta then the crown looks great its easy to get great out of the box reps. -

I have spent alot (not comparativly to gen of course) to have my 177h upgraded crown and AR coated. i have a few customs straps from one of our members V who travels finds leathers and sends them off to be custom made.

in the last year some "super" reps that are really good have started with other models- mostly IWC, Breitling and omega - with a few others here and there. - Its really quite crazy how good they have gotten. Lately with a new line of genuine Swiss 7750 reps where the Gen uses a 7750 - so, they have the same movement, they are made fromt eh same material, they look exactly alike - aside from the fact they were made on one side of china instead of the other - demands a high premium :)

we all just hope that we continue to stay under the radar so to speak and that our "high priced" reps (i.e. not 60 canal street crap) stays a relativly small market. for many of us, there would be no other way to own so many nice mechanical watches. ;) and almost all of the watches you will find here are due great respect and admiration in their own right - irrespective of the brand name

lI hear that phoband!!! like I said...I didn't even know these things existed until yesterday and I already feel like I'm in on some big secret...

  11. 203? Did I hear someone telling '203'?

    199817-1887.jpg

    199817-1888.jpg

    127 USD.

Yes, a bit weird. Especially considering that in the Sotheby's Hong Kong auction, Oct 2006, a 203 has been sold @ 77000 USD.

    Rep stuff... :D

Welcome aboard, best wishes for you to enjoy this place as much as we do!

that's right my friend...you must either know Mr. Bonati himself, or be blessed from above.... the sweet, sweet Angelus movement....only 150 of those 203s in the world, and not all have even been allocated...$77k is probably actually cheap compared to what the 'right' buyer would be willing to pay....I'd say $127 is a pretty darn good price...all things considered.... :thumbsupsmileyanim: cheers!!!!

  12. ahh, i see...mucho 24mm straps you have...i guess i was wondering how you were swingin the same leather on a 44mm and a 47mm...the one i was referring to is from a post you made on Jan 29 2007, 02:21 PM in the "help me choose" thread...they look pretty similar...both very nice! glad to know you didn't cut down a good fiddy strap to fit a 111...would have been sort of like an inverse Rad strap...i guess...but funky...cheers!

  13. Oh yea...don't you have a 111 on that same strap? call me a stalker, but as soon as i realized that you have a similar affinity for the 127, i started reading through your old posts. I'm no expert that's for sure, but I'm pretty OCD about PAMs, and I'm still coming to terms with the fact that no matter what, nothing's gonna be perfect...what can i expect though, at 3% of the cost of an OEM...heck, until yesterday I thought I was gonna have to settle for a recessed cannon pin. I’m still looking for sure, but for now, I guess the best I can hope for is a Davidsen Ultimate Fiddy with "broad dagger" regulator on the swan’s neck…which I’m not even sure exists….???

  14. Seriously Andy...I feel like a kid in a candy shop...call me naïve, but I didn’t even know ‘good’ reps existed until yesterday…I’ve seen the junky cheapos on ebay and I’ve seen the reps that were being scammed as OEM on the same site, but I had no idea there was a whole community of good folks dedicated to the craft of promoting/discussing this stuff…although I will admit it’s weird to see 203s for sale for 200 bucks!

  15. Hello all! I just posted in the intro forum, but thought I’d stop by here as well, to say hi and thanks for all of the great info…I only discovered RWG yesterday, but already my wife feels like I’ve abandoned her in favor of the watch gods...yet again!

I have been an OEM/GEN PAM enthusiast since a friend got a 111g for his wedding back in 2004. From the first moment I saw that big ol tuna can on his wrist, I knew I needed to have one of my own…fast forward to 2006, and I was finally able to save up enough to get a 111i (new from an AD). Now another year on, my obsession and passion for the brand have continued to grow…along with the list of PAMs I would love to own…but my wallet and wife are mysteriously unimpressed…I can’t imagine why… :Jumpy:

Anyway, I’m fascinated by the grace and simplicity of the historic models, and although I would love to own a Base or a Fiver or a Black Seal or an 8 Day (190), the one that really drives me crazy is the Fiddy! A friend picked one up at the Firenze Boutique last summer (must have been one of the last BNIB), and ever since then, I melt whenever I see it…It’s such a stunningly powerful watch, with its minimalist design and historic roots…

BUT, the problem is that no matter how much I love it, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to afford one (at least not in the foreseeable future)…So a few weeks ago I set myself to the task of sussing out a good quality rep…first stumbling upon the cheapos (totally inaccurate), then some pretty good knockoffs, and finally ending up here, where fortunately I’ve found some awesome resources (you folks), and some equally awesome craftsmen who appear to be building pretty darn compelling Reps….

That’s about long enough for now…no questions yet (too much good info to source through), but thanks again…

    Cheers!

  16. …hoping to expand my WIS knowledge and pick up some otherwise unattainable ‘grail’ REPS along the way…

I’ve only been here for about 24 hours, but my brain is already swimming with great info; from Pugwash, and V, and Rolli (insane EYE CANDY), and Flavor Flav, and Tourbillon1801, and The Zigmeister and others...so I thought I’d drop a line to say hi and thanks!

My membership upgrade is ‘pending’, but once I’m up and running I hope to become a contributing participant…as well as a gratuitous leacher of fantastic information!

    Cheers from Boston!
