  1. OK so I'm working on my first build from scratch. Its a Datejust 16000 I have a gen case and bracelet and tube for that matter but my question is this, when it comes to the crown can you tell a difference between a good (say MMM) crown and a Gen crown? Is it that big of a deal? as the Gen's on ebay are in the $100+ price range and rep is quite a bit cheaper. I personally am having a hard time telling the difference between them. The only thing that I can think of is possibly the number of ridges on the coin edge of the crown? I notice when browsing through the classifieds here that many people upgrade to gen what is the benefit? Sorry if this is a dumb question I tried searching the forum for an answer and came up empty.

  2. The dial is gen I picked it up on Ebay and the rest is all MMM 18K overlay bezel and the bracelet has the hollow gold midlinks. The movement is high grade asian 2836-2. I have a Gen buckle I will probably swap out. But like I say the rest of it, Matt has his own source. I honestly don't really care about how "gen" everything is as it looks awesome to me and I have NO plans on ever getting rid of it. Its exactly what I wanted and especially because it fit my budget.

  3. I got my watch from Mymanmatt yesterday and I love it! I will let you be the judge...sorry for the crap pictures I will take some better ones later this week I just did this at my desk at work with my phone. Sorry for the angles, I was trying to show off the pyramid dial. I owned the Gen version of this 15 years ago and I have to say I am quite happy with Matts work!

  4. I'm thinking of ordering the watch below as it already comes with a "gold wrapped" bracelet. I have purchased a gold wrapped bracelet from riyii and LOVE it for my TT Sub and I'm just wondering if anyone know if Andrews are of the same quality? Also I have a gen dial, that would be able to be swapped out with this watch fairly easily I'm hoping correct? As always thanks for the input!

  5. for those of you who say its obviously fake.....not to everyone, to you guys who have been doing this for years maybe. I have no friggin idea what I'm looking at when I try to tell the difference between gen and rep? Believe me I'm trying to learn. For instance I have a sub I bought from Andrew @ Trusty ...I'm sitting here looking at it and looking at watches on ebay or even the Rolex website .....what the hell am I looking for? They look virtually identical to me. Maybe the rep is a little thicker? maybe the crown looks slightly different? I am not saying any of this as a smart ass I honestly want to know what to look for and to learn the difference. I have a rep from about ten years ago....a datejust and yeah I can for sure tell the difference from it and a gen...the date window has no magnification, and it obviously looks and feels cheap...but I bought my Mom a ladies datejust and we put it next to my Aunt's gen and I couldnt tell them apart aside from the rotor inside the rep was noisier. Anyway thanks again for all the help and input as usual  you guys are a wealth of knowledge

  6. Lesson learned for sure, I contacted the seller and he said he didn't know what he had and that he got it at an estate sale blah blah blah...anyway sale cancelled, lesson learned. I really appreciate all the input as I'm very new to the hobby but also very eager to learn what to look for. Again thanks for all the responses.

  7. I just picked this up on Ebay and now having second thoughts. I'm not 100% sure of what to look for but do you think its a miracle and I got a Gen? If its a rep I'm sure the guy selling it knew but I thought it might be worth it for the case if and maybe the movment if Gen but I'm kinda doubting it now. I think if you put the item number in the ebay search bar it will pull it up

  8. I'm just wondering if anyone has tried one of these bands? and if they are worth the money over a gold plated model? I'm looking to get a  nice Two Tone Sub and was thinking of replacing the band with one of these as the Gen band is a bit out of my price range right now. Its also something that I would like to wear every day or at least a few times a week and don't want to have to worry about the gold wearing off too soon. I have an Invicta thats gold plated and its literally worn off after wearing it about 5 times. Anyway as usual your experience is always appreciated. Below is the Ebay link

  9. Wow you both make a lot of sense. Honestly a Daytona may just be too much for my first attempt. I need to do a bit more research. I have just been infatuated with the Paul Newman Daytonas for years but I think I might need quite a bit more experience before I try to tackle a project like this. Maybe I can start with trying to build a Franken sub :)

I really appreciate all the information, you guys are leaps and bounds beyond my knowledge base but I have to say this is one addictive hobby. Thank you again

  10. Who has the best vintage Daytona? Preferably a 6241? I'm looking for something as close to original as I can get to start with. It will be what I hope to be my first "franken" project. I would like to have a fully functional chrono but not sure if that is as important to begin with as the case and bracelet? My long term..and I mean fairly long term as when I can slowly save money to buy Gen parts...long term goal is to fit it with a swiss Valjoux movement and work on the crystal and bracelet etc.. from there. So I guess my question is can you point me in the direction of the best base I can get for the money? Thank you so much for your help and expertise as always

  11. I came across this the other day its ss and 14k can anyone tell me from what time period it comes from maybe what watch band# and or what it might be worth? It may be hard to tell from the pics but the only 14k part is the little Rolex symbol.

  12. Thanks for the answers. I did look on ebay but those gen dials are a little more than I was wanting to spend I'm really just looking for something to play around with at first and the Datejust I have Is really just a pos, I took the bezel off and the crystal and bezel are connected. I think I may go a different route as I have an older invicta that has a Miyota 8215 movement in it I think that should be something I can work with...I hope without messing it up too bad. Any way Thanks for your responses and Its great to meet  you guys.

  13. I have been searching the threads and looking at many dealer websites and It seems like there are plenty of Submariner dials out there but is there a site that has Datejust or other dials and bezels? I am new to the forum, and am so glad I found you guys I didn't know this world existed until I happened upon it. I have been blind and now I can see! I think I have been sitting in front of this computer for three days straight now just reading everything that I can. I have made some unfortunate purchases in the past...most recently from Ioffer.com, I'm still waiting on that one to arrive and hopefully I can use it for parts which brings me around to my original question, I have a pretty crappy rep, the case seems ok but I would like to change the dial as it says Dayjust and looks like its made of plastic. I was hoping to practice with it, swapping the dial, hands, crown etc...can someone point me to a good source for parts please?
