Hi all! Does anyone know if there is a way to strip a PVD coating with household products? I have very little knowledge about PVD.

I've got an old Heuer sub that I picked up for almost free thats covered in the stuff, but I'd like to see it in plain SS.

The ultimate cooking watch would have to be a chronosport UDT or a breitling Pluton. Rotating bezel AND digital chrongraph AND alarm. You could be keeping a lazy eye on three pots! Waterproof and cool as hell looking. I'd sell you this one if I hadn't already replaced it with the Chronosport...

Quite a beauty and certainly one for the ages - congrats! Vintage is really my main passion. I'm a bit concerned about that bezel, though. Here's why: I thought that SM300s had perspex or acrylic/resin style bezels which were back filled with lumed paint and then painted black on the underside. The bezel was made as a one piece unit and there is no replacement 'insert' as the whole bezel has to be replaced. With this setup, when the bezel scratched it was clear, so as not to degrade the numbers or business bit of the bezel. On your version it appears to have a painted aluminum insert that's seen some defacement, thus removing the numbers. I've no idea how it got this way unless someone used some sort of solvent to remove the old acrylic insert and put this machined piece in there.

That all said, I may be talking out my you-know-what and not be completely up on vintage Omega SM300s, but do a little research and you'll find at least your answer, if not a new bezel!

I'm assuming you bought this as a gen, right? Perhaps a rep bezel will pop right on! Wouldn't that be great!

My BOA card also does this, as does my Capital One card usually. No biggie. I'd rather a phone call than a fraudulent charge.

I had one card, I think Bank of America, that would always decline foreign Internet payments. Two other cards were never a problem.

Unfortunately, that's normal for a 2813 - well normal for a poorly put together 2813. Indirect drive seconds hand means there is a 'brake' on the seconds hand. This causes the hand to stop and catch up sometimes, mostly due to gravity. If you turned the watch upside down it'd probably do it from 35 to 60. Not much you can do about it. Trust me, I've tried. Though I did learn quite a bit about the 2813 while trying to "fix" it!

While good timekeepers and rugged, the 2813 sucks for sweep appearance.

Just wound up my Sinn U1 with Asian movement and was watching the second hand move. The second hand kinds of stutters (jumps) from 5 to 25 and after it sweeps normally.. The stuttering is a little hard to describe, it kinds of jumps second by second while the usual sweep does so in 1/2 second steps. Is this something normal for the asian A2813, can someone with a U1 confirm this is normal? I have compared with my other rep watches and it keeps a whole minute well, just a bit uncomfortable with the needle stuttering. Thanks!

Oh, dry those eyes Sander! You're thread was kind of beyond comprehension in difficulty level!! One hell of a feat - would be easier to save up for a gen! While you may have broken new ground in terms of accuracy, the amount of work makes it so unattainable for most that perhaps there was a disconnect. One thing's for sure: you must have the steady hands of a brain surgeon to make that work.

I thank you for your time and effort in putting that thread together - it represents the X factor (to the nth degree!) of why most commoners do not understand how deep this hobby can be.

Unfortunately, nothing is quite so clear cut with this situation. Once you have an A21 movement in a watch (aka dg2813), you're kind of stuck. You can simply replace your movement (the non-gmt one) with a replacement dg2813 and hope that the canon pinion is the right height. If not, you can take your old canon pinion off your old movement and put it on the replacement if need be. The beauty of it is, no matter how bad you screw up, you can get a whole new movement for $25. I paid $20 locally here in NYC for one off the shelf at my local watch house. In some situations you can also upgrade in beat to the dg4813, but they stem holes alignment is an issue - sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you don't. As far as the GMT is concerned, I have no idea what to do there.

What's the moral of the story? Pay the extra for ETA or at least the asian ETA clone. The indirect second hand drive on the 2813/8215 just plain sucks.

What are you nutz? Take Dluddy up on his offer, get yourself a caseback opener and put that new sucker on yourself, reveling in the kindness of the forumers and breaking your Rep and Watch-repairing cherry in one fell swoop. The sooner you figure out creative solutions to rep flaws, the happier you'll be collecting reps. I find I get much more satisfaction out these watch the more I'm able to tinker with them. That may not be you, I understand, but caseback romoval is hardly watchsmithing...it's called unscrewing!

Nick - superb writeup. Surely a stealth super-rep. As far as the caseback discrepancy with the missing numbers on the gen, I think the Gen just had the original (possibly serial #) digitally obscured in the photo. A common issue with web photos of gen watches.

My just landed today Royal Oak project watch. A handsome devil with a beguiling bracelet - range of motion of links makes fitting it nicely, rather difficult. Such a beautiful watch, though. I'm mesmerized.

Mine finally got here - mailman rang my bell while I was looking at the thread about the very watches! That amused me. Here's a quick and dirty. Overall, a beautiful watch. Unfortunately when you pore over something as this project watch has been pored over before it even gets to you - you look maybe a little too close. I think I need to grind out the bottom side of the bracelet to make it drape a little more. The case shape is really long, leading to some overhang issues if you don't have a wide flat wrist. All in all, it's one of my more handsome watches. The blue's a little darker than the vintage blue I was hoping for. Has a purplish tinge at some angles. Oh well, you can never (and I mean never) have everything in the rep world!
