  1. Greetings,

I have said it several times before that I am not the greatest at modding and movement work. However, as I was driving home from work for some reason I felt my caseback on my steelfish come loose. I took this as an excellent opportunity to see what was inside. (Glad I didn't go swimming) I have read several threads lately about the differences between the 2813 and the 2824 but I never really found any good pictures comparing the two. I decided to snap a little picture and make sure the masses agree we have a 2824. My eyes might be failing me as I couldn't even with the help of a magnifying glass decipher the 2824. Do we agree this is an 2824?

  2. What I find interesting about Jay and his very minor foibles some here may find very irritating. With age I have learned patience and that is what I urge with Jay, who is not Andrew or Josh, but who will get you a watch you want (or very close to it) and other "collectors" will tell you it does not exist.

I couldn't agree more to what you are saying. I tend to stay with my regular collectors but the other day I ordered a Vintage Bond sub from Jay as I thought that he had a pretty close version of what I was looking for. I received an email that he mailed my piece on September 3rd and of course it arrived on the 5th. 2-3 days to the US is pretty quick. :D

However, before ordering, I made sure to send a detailed picture of the model, the writing on the dial, and most importantly the bezel. The watch arrived today with the wrong bezel insert... ;) Oh well... what are you going to do...?

  3. Kind of a silly question but perhaps I could poll the masses. I generally like straps that tuck inside the first and second holder comfortably. I actually think it looks better when the straps build up at the bottom. I know, kind of silly. My wristsize is around 7.25 so I don't have a huge wrist but I generally buy straps around 125x85. When I wear my Pams with this length, I buckle the strap almost all the way to the end (1 hole left) and about 3 cm tucked.

I am about to buy some more expensive Toscanna straps and those are not made in my regular size above. They usually come in 120x85 and then the larger 130x85. I read somewhere that the Toscana straps are so thick that you should preferably choose a little bit longer strap. I just don't want it to be too long if you get my drift. Should I get the 130x85?

  4. check this link for some old sub history. 6538 with red on bezel...http://www.bjsonline.com/watches/articles/0018_1.shtml<snip> Surprisingly, the ref. 6538 kept the same model reference. 1957-1961. The new ref. 6538 Submariner had a heavier case, bezel markings for the first 15 minutes, and a red triangle at the 12 position. It had a larger Triplelock style crown.... <snip>
Great Read... I educated myself... I guess I'll buy one as well... ;)
Strangely enough, there are people that swear up and down that red is a must and others swear that red was ONLY on the Milgauss, others swear the minutes chapter on the bezel insert had tic marks from 0-15 and others swear there should never be tic marks from 0-15. I just bought a 1675 GMT that has a dial that was supposedly never made, and then a photo came up over on VRF that shows my watch with a genuine dial like mine. The only rule of thumb with vintage Rolex is, there ARE no rules of thumb. Almost anything goes/went.
    Thanks for the feedback...
  5. It seems many collectors are now offering various versions of the 6538, 5508, etc. I don't know too much about the vintage Bond history, but I have read most of the articles on our board. It seems among our little club, that the 6538 is the model reference that closest refer to/known as the typical Bond. However, after checking out Nanuqs gens... or not... and other... it seems most of the 6538 are not red around the pearl area? Am I going blind?

  6. damm i think my bars are both damaged then somehow.... if i look at where i would put in a screwdriver to remove them its looks like this

\_________/ <---well not THAT extreme but u get the idea

so it should be straight JUST like a rolex spring bar correct?

Hopefully the holes weren't drilled in the wrong area. Many times they solve this by slightly bending the springbar with dental floss or similar to get them to snap in. Go for leather or rubber instead! :thumbsupsmileyanim:

  7. The Food Network is a real whos-who with watches and sometimes you get a good look with some of the closeups and camera angles. Emeril usually wears a Date-Just, but I have seen him wear what looks like an orange dialed Doxa from time to time. Bobby Flay is always wearing his Date Just. Alton Brown is a watch fanatic since I have never noticed him wear the same watch twice (noticed him wearing what looks like an IWC Pilot once). Wolfgang Puck wears Panerai. Tyler Florence wears many different watches as well and I have seen him wear Panerail on a few of his shows. Paula Deen's sons both wear Submariners and Giada DeLaurentis (sp.) has at least two Rolexes, both mens size. Al Roker wears a Submariner on his show. Yep, we do watch a lot of Food network at our house.

I believe Tyler has Big Pilot, a Fiddy, and Santos 100.

  8. Thanks guys, I got the strap from Howard at hxxp://www.westcoastime.com/

It was supposed to be the same strap as timefactors but quicker shipping for US based people. However, I later found out what arrived is not the same as advertised on timefactors because the stock of 20mm bonds constantly fluctuates. Howard swore up and down that it is the best made strap available though.

That is so funny as I did the exact same thing. Living here in the US, it does take some time to gethis straps. This way I thought I could cut down some time. I got a little adjated with Howard as he really needs to remove those pictures or "make it appear" that he is still selling Eddie's stock on his site. I like Eddie's straps for a few reasons:

    1) Softer

    2) Better length for me (I actually don't have to tuck the end in)

    3) Softer on the wrist

  9. Hi one and all, here is yet another steelfish topic!!!

I have a black dial Steelfish from PT which I am extremely happy with and I want to get a black genuine strap for it.

I approached an AD about ordering me one but they said they would need to see the watch to get the serial number from it so as to order the correct size, I am not willing to take the watch in for obvious reasons. If I knew what size then I could just go in there and tell them and order it straight off. If they won't have that and still insist on seeing the watch then I will try ebay or other means, anyhow I still need to know the size!! so can anyone help me out. Many thanks in advance.

    Nick

or search for breitling rubber on TZ. There is a guy that sells new stock there for $95 shipped...

  10. Greetings,

I am a swede but I have been living here in the U.S for many years. My wife's grandfather gave us a very nice mechanical (weight) grandfather clock he indicated they bought in Germany many years ago. I have tried to determine the age of this thing for many years but I am not really sure of what to look for. According to her grandfather the piece can be anywhere from the late 1800's or early 1900's or even after the 1950's. I am not sure. I am enclosing some pictures of the piece itself but also of the tag inside the front door. I think it starts with the name of the watchmaker and then perhaps the city where it originated?

    Any other ideas?

  11. Yup... a few days ago I checked in at www.broadarrow.net and it seems more an more stores now have the orange NATO in stock. Hmmm.. and I have been looking for 6 months and when I make a post they magically show up all over the place in around 2 weeks... :thumbsupsmileyanim:

Looks like Westcoastime just added a G10 style in orange. I like the Zulu as well but it has more heft to it than a NATO.

  12. Greetings,

Forgive me if this has been brought up before but I am not sure if my eyes are failing me here. I recently received the white dial Swiss version and for some reason the numerals and place markers to me look like they have a gold tint/color to them? I don't think I am losing my mind just yet but is anyone else seeing this?

    //Cheers
