Fat Font Sub Bezel Inserts?

Does anyone know the history of the fat font bezel inserts that are seen on some vintage pieces? Is there a particular serial range for which they're appropriate? Or were they randomly dispersed throughout Rolex history?

Fat fonts are what would be the original inserts from the Sub/SD 1570 caliber era as they were produced in this time frame. There are a couple of different variations; size of font, square vs. rounded and serifs are all characteristics of the variations out there.

The thin fonts are characteristic of lumi service replacements.
