blueclub Posted December 1, 2006 Report Share Posted December 1, 2006 Milan is anything you want it to be: great dining, arts, shopping..it really depends on what your interests are. Unfortunately you are visiting the city one week too early: the 7th of december is the Feast of St Ambrogio, the patron saint of Milan, and that turns the centre into a wonderful gigantic "happening". Anyway if you are there already on Saturday I would make a quick tour of the centre just browsing around the Duomo, the Galleria nearby and letting your feet take you wherever you want around there. You might eventually stumble across Peck, a gastronomic institution, and its amazing shop in Via Spadari, 200 metres from the square of the Duomo, and if you have deep pockets you can try its restaurant in Via Hugo. The Scala is also very close and worth a visit, they have guided tours during the day. At the other side of the square you can find long streets full of prestigious shops in th triangle formed by Via della Spiga, Via Montenapoleone and Via Manzoni. If you are artistically inclined then after exiting the Galleria and turning right you will come across a long road leading to the Castello Sforzesco, an imposing structure built in the late middle age and a definite must see. Nearby you will find the ancient basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, also worth a visit. One of the most famous icons of Milan, the "Last Supper" by Leonardo, is basically out of bounds for the occasional tourist as it can only be seen by appointment and the waiting list usually runs to 2-3 months. If you are really keen then inquire with your concierge to find out which organised tour has it included. That will be the only chance to have a glance at it. Museums are here aplenty: the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Poldi-Pezzoli are only a long stroll away from the Duomo and well worth a visit especially to escape the occasional squall. Sunday is of course the day where you can also visit the Milanese Temple of Football: the San Siro stadium which hosts the home games of Inter and Milan. Dinner is not going to be cheap but if you are partial to a gastronomic treat or two then you cannot do much better than "Il luogo di Aimo e Nadia", a veritable temple of Italian cuisine, based on the freshest of ingredients. If you are looking for a cheaper but intriguing alternative, then go to Boccondivino in Via carducci. There you only need to sit and be pampered by the staff who will keep presenting you with an excellent selection of food without you lifting a finger, accompanied by wine generously offered and chosen by the resident Sommelier. Not to be missed. Finally a short jaunt to "WAtch & Clock" in largo settimio severo, near Piazza magenta and the Conciliazione stop of the line 1 of the metro, will let you admire the most respected shop of its kind in Northern italy. In addition to the previously mentioned: The Castle Sforzesco where there is a Michelangelo La Pieta, and no one knows it's there. There is also a room he painted in murals. The Porta Romana, good bars under a Roman arch. La Enoteca Cotti on Via Solferino, maybe the best Italian wine store in the world. La Scala, fresh after a 5 year rennovation. Eat at Da Giacomo. An old standby Milanese restaurant.
