My Hermes Birkin, Out Of The Box Experience

Hermes will no longer authenticate bags brought in off the street - the best copies are so good that they often can't tell the difference - unless you happen to have the store receipt - in which case, why the hell are you trying to authenticate it anyway?

On the other hand, if you happen to be good friends with the people at your local Hermes boutique, you just might stand a chance of their people checking it out. But there again, you risk coming off like a perfect ass: 'Umm....I bought this for my wife on the Internet and the guy swore it was a gen but now I'm having second thoughts, blah, blah, blah, etc.....'

The only way to go is trust what the person selling it to you is saying (like Sash) and/or check your bag against a genuine, like Manny is going to do.

By the way, if he (Manny) is reading this, I'd like to know how he can tell that the Birkin pictured here is the real deal.....true, it looks like it, but that's the way a mirror-image bag is supposed to look.

So what's the giveaway proving it's a gen? For me, I'd have to see close-up pics of the lock, the keys, the serial numbers on the keys, the exact thickness of the leather (as measured by a precision calipers) and probably several other criteria which don't immediately come to mind as I'm writing this.

I don't pretend to be the world's specialist on what makes a Hermes gen a gen, but I have done some homework over the last year and a half. And personally, I have no way of knowing if that bag is real or not.

When Manny looks at the pics and says 'it's genuine' I want to know what he's seeing that tips the balance for him. For all I know, it's possible that he spends his time actually making these bags for Hermes. For all I know, he actually made the one in the pics. But that would put him in Paris, where he is not.

So what's your secret, Manny? I hope you understand that I'm asking this in the friendliest and most non-confrontational way. And if you don't want to say, well, all that means is that I've still got something to learn about the subject - which is what life is all about anyway......

In closing, I'm happy to see that Sash is communicating so well on the subject - and that people are getting interested in what he's offering. I think he's done his utmost in trying to source the best bags out there, and I wish him all success. If they're as good as he says, we all stand to gain (at least those of us interested in acquiring one).

So congratulations, Sash, keep up the good work and if everything checks out, you'll eventually be getting an order from me. After the Christmas rush, since. I'm in no hurry. I don't even care about it being shipped in the huge Hermes box - if Sash can figure out a way to ship it shrink-wrapped inside a package of Ramen noodles (chicken-flavored are my favorite) it's fine with me.

No worries, Ryyannon. :D I'm no expert on these things so I had to use other means. You said it exactly, you have to worry about the seller, not the photo. While everything in that photo looks gen to my untrained eyes I wouldn't drop my cash just on that. During all my research I fell in with a bunch of crazy hermes PIS. They actually authenicated the seller of this bag and a few others. Actually they were very helpful. You are very right about how hard it is. One of the sellers on the bay that was very well know as selling gens had a photo of a bag that I sent to Sash. He thought for sure it was a rep but the seller checks out with this group that buys hundreds of bags from the AD mostly but buys from resellers when the wait is too long for some bags.

So the short answer is I don't really know but I have it on good advice that it is a gen, for what that is worth.

Cheers,

CM

Thanks Sash - That real croc is excellent VFM compared to the gen but is a bit out of my league at the moment.

Great news about the AD invoice - proves that your factory is producing the very best quality (not that I was doubting it anyway) as the research I've done seems to show that one of the big 'tells' when ordering AAAAA+++++ Super Copys before seeing them is the attention to detail with the quality and quantity of the bits and pieces as supplied with the gen - am I right with this ryyannon or have I picked up the wrong end of the stick?

Not in a rush to order Sash (already bought the wifes xmas present) so will wait until I see the Chicken Manny review - are you going to do the sort of review ryyannon is talking about Manny as well as taking it to your friends who have 4-5 gens so we can possibly see some comparison photos?

Maybe it would be an idea for you to post the ideal review criteria ryyannon because you've obviously got a lot of great research knowledge and that could combine with Manny's experience of the gens for a perfect review we would all definitely benefit from.

Many thanks to Sash for bringing me and Tech and everyone else the chance to get in the wife's good (best) books and the same thanks to ryannon and Chicken Manny for the excellent and informative posts.

Looking forward to the review.
