Has anyone ever asked you about your rep?

I work at a Casino here in Australia and I work in the VIP and VVIP sections. I never used to wear my rep AP ROO Diver (super rep) because most of the people that are in the salons that I deal in would know that it's an expensive watch or even my super rep Panerai 299 which are the only 2 rep watches I have. I normally only wear my ceramic armani watch that my mum bough for me as a birthday present. That being said, I see ALOT of people at my work wearing rep watches, I'm walking about the players here, people betting 1k-10k per hand (on baccarat). That is when I am in the VIP main floor area and Ive seen Quartz Hublot's and rollies. but by far the worst I saw was one woman that was wearing a rep Nautilus (it was Quartz) and she was betting 50k-100k per hand.

That being said, I've seen my share of gen watches too, lots of rolex's a few AP's Hublot's, PP's and even saw a Richard Mille once. and see a lot of Tourbillon's but don't know what brand they are. I think the nicest watch I've seen is a Hublot Big Bang Classic. just had hours, mins, seconds. black dial face with silver hour marking, the bezel was rose gold and the case was silver with a black rubber strap, I really want to find a super rep of that. my favourite watch so far, I see that patron often and he's always wearing it, it goes with a suit nicely but can also be worn casually, I love it.

 

 

I saw that watch for sale today on Craigslist $100. I will buy it if it has not sold. Love that watch,

Same response I have when I sport a rep. But usually it is "I made it myself"

It all depends. In some situations I will be perfectly candid about the provenance of my rep. It can indeed be a good conversation starter.

 

A few years ago I was buying a new car and the negotiator turned out to be really into watches. He had an IWC and told me about the Panerai that he planned to purchase. So I had to poo poo the Pam 192 on my writst even though he was practically drooling over it because I needed him to think I was really stretching my resources to afford the car. (OK, I was going to pay cash except they had a 0% three-year loan offer, which I took because.... why not!) Perhaps I should have offered him my rep in exchange for knocking a few grand off the price!

 

In other cases I downplay the name (for example most people have never even heard of an IWC or Chopard, so if you say the name matter of factly they might just say "Oh, nice watch" -- and go on from there).

 

For a brand that is more familiar (i.e. Rolex, Breitling, Panerai) and where the other responses are problematic, I might say the watch was a gift. That would address issues of whether you are wearing a watch that is beyond your means or they consider excessively showy. (I happen to have both an Omega and a Rolex that I received or inherited from my father, so I don't consider it a slight to my father's memory to use the attribution.)
