N E W M o d e l – Nomos Tangomat Automatic

195533-3533.jpg

NOMOS Glashütte has constructed and manufactured its first automatic movement. The Tangomat will be available in stores in the fall

NOMOS Glashütte is a manufacture. The youngest of the Glashütte watch manufacturers is now bringing automatic watches to the market. The movement was completely developed at NOMOS Glashütte and produced in-house. This represents the last step needed for the company to become a manufacture.

Within just one good year, Mirko Heyne, a 29-year-old NOMOS watchmaker, designed and developed this milestone. Not calculated in this amount of time is the test phase, which will begin in April 2005: 250 watches, 125 with and 125 without date, will from then on undergo the trials and tribulations of everyday wear by interested parties for four months before the test results finally make the watch officially ready for the market.

A specialty of NOMOS: The centered rotor is made of one piece heavy metal. Its radius is larger than the radius of comparable components in other automatic watches, and for this reason the automatic NOMOS watches’ winding performance is exceptionally good. This watch is very cleanly made and can already now be said to be extremely robust and reliable.

The subsidiary seconds are an element that will remain on NOMOS’ automatic watches. Advantage: This style is more legible than sweep seconds. In addition, the watch remains flatter because there are only two hands that need to be piled on the arbor in the middle of the dial, not three. Another well-known NOMOS characteristic is the sapphire crystal case back, a component that is especially important on the new watch.

One not only sees how the movement ticks and winds, one can also find the NOMOS construction bearing the beautiful name Wippbewegungsgleichrichter (“teeter motion rectifier”) and a duplex wheel with a loose clutch. In the spring barrel a slipping clutch takes care that the mainspring doesn’t block when it is fully tensioned. So that it doesn’t experience too much wear and tear – many automatic movements run the risk of too much wear and tear – Heyne very simply adjusted the rotor and its weight exactly to the mainspring. Thus, the rotor moves more slowly when the spring is fully tensioned.

195533-3534.jpg

And, naturally, the movement includes the Glashütte three-quarter plate, Glashütte click, Triovis fine adjustment, sunburst decoration on crown and duplex wheels, Langeleist perlage, Glashütte ribbing, and tempered blue countersunk screws. It’s all there.

The automatic caliber developed by NOMOSmeasures 34.65 mm. The balance is much larger than those of many comparable calibers. A large movement also means great rate precision, according to the rule. And the prototype’s rate precision lay under one minute deviation per week. The height is a low 4.3 mm, making the automatic movement’s height-width ratio especially favorable.

195533-3535.jpg

Mirko Heyne is the designer of NOMOS’ first autonomous movement. He is 29 years old and had an apprenticeship at Lange & Söhne.

MSRP will be between 1,500 and 1,800 Euros. That makes it just about fifty percent more expensive than the manually wound classic Tangente. Inside the watch, however, almost twice as many parts see to the watch ticking properly. There are seven frame parts instead of four, 15 new wheels, and a completely new winding mechanism outfitted with rotor and ball bearings.

NOMOS was founded in 1990. It employs 28 watchmakers, 2 research & development/technology staff, 9 mechanics, 3 workmen, 11 administrative staff, and 1 trainee.

N E W M o d e l – Omega Speedmaster Gemini 4 Special Edition

195542-3526.jpg

This special Speedmaster model, created for Baselworld 2005, commemorates not only the 40th anniversary of the first space walk, but also the 40th anniversary of the Speedmaster's flight qualification for manned spaceflight missions.

These important milestones are celebrated with a distinctive model with a blue dial and matching blue aluminium ring on the steel bezel. Only 2,005 pieces will be made.

The Gemini 4 limited-edition Speedmaster is characterised by its blue dial and silver counters for the 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters and continuous seconds. The blue theme is also continued on the bezel, with the familiar tachymeter scale reproduced on a blue aluminium ring. The commemorative nature of the timepiece is indicated by a subtle red engraving 1965-2005 below the Speedmaster name at 12 o'clock on the dial.

The applied Omega symbol above the name, as well as 12 rhodium-plated hour markers, also add a hint of luxury and indicate that this Speedmaster is special. In all other respects, the watch remains a classic Speedmaster, with the same case, bracelet and hesalite crystal found on the "Moon Watch" - the standard Speedmaster Professional model. Movement is the hand-wind Omega caliber 1861.

However, one of its most striking features is destined to remain hidden most of the time, since it is the distinctive Gemini 4 mission patch, bearing the names of the crew, McDivitt and White, and an illustration of the first space walk, that is etched in colour on the sapphire crystal case back with the engraving "First Space Walk 40th Anniversary" and the limited-edition number (0001/2005).

N E W M o d e l – Antoine Preziuso 3 Volution Triple Tourbillon

195801-3206.jpg

The 3 Volution from Antoine Preziuso features three flying tourbillons. Each of these makes a compete rotation around its axis in one minute, with all three attached to a plate, which revolves around in 2 minutes 15 seconds.

It measures 51mm X 34mm X 8mm. The 3 Volution has an in-house caliber with a very particular construction. The manual winding arms a double barrel, for an optimal performance and a power reserve of 72 hours.

The gear train pulls a pierced circular plate that carries the three tourbillons, which rotate in one minute. Placed equidistant from the centre of the plate, their axes form an equilateral triangle. The plate makes one revolution in an anti-clockwise direction in 2 minutes and 15 seconds. This double revolution, accelerating the speed of rotation of the tourbillons, also contributes to better precision. The resonance phenomenon is activated by the edge of the plate’s circumference, which acts as a sound box. The respective frequencies of the three regulating organs synchronize with each other simultaneously.

Mr. Preziuso will showcase this masterpiece at his artelier on April 5-9 near Geneva.

N E W M o d e l – Chronoswiss Digiteur

195874-3181.jpg

At Baselworld 2005, Chronoswiss displayed its new Digiteur MSA (Montre sans Aiguilles) (watch without hands).

It is based on a NOS shaped-movement from FEF, the movement-blank specialist that was founded by Jules Jéquier and David Louis Petitpierre in the Swiss town of Fleurier, Val de Travers in 1882. Their movement-blank division achieved independence under the name “Fabrique d’ebauches de Fleurier (FEF)” in 1920, but was soon incorporated into the powerful Ebauches SA movement-blank holding company in 1932. This enterprise continued to produce hand-wound movements in various designs until 1979, when the “Quartz Watch Revolution” killed it.

Mr. Gerd-Rüdiger Lang, the founder of Chronoswiss, is fanatically devoted to mechanical timepieces, so it comes as no surprise to learn that he discovered this treasure-trove and acquired its “shapely” contents for Chronoswiss, his Munich-based watchmaking company.

But to satisfy Chronoswiss’s lofty standards, the original caliber has been modified and finely reworked.

195874-3182.jpg

The Digiteur is a limited edition. It displays the jumping hours, digital minutes and digital seconds.

The case is available in platinum (33 pieces); 18kt yellow gold (99 pieces); 18kt rose gold (99 pieces); and 18kt white gold (99 pieces). It measures 45.5mm X 27.7mm X 11mm. It has a sapphire crystal and a sapphire exhibition back. It has screwed-on strap bars with a patented Autobloc safety system, the lugs measure 20mm. It is water resistant 30 meters.

Movement is the manual wind, shaped caliber FEF 130, a NOS movement from 1933-1963, with 15 jewels, a 40 hour power-reserve, beating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. It has polished pallets, palletwheel and screws. The bridges are finished with Geneva Stripes, polished and perlaged.

N E W M o d e l – Paul Picot Technograph

Apr 15, 2005 - 03:12 PM

196116-3053.jpg

At Baselworld 2005, Paul Picot unveiled its newest model, the Technograph chronograph.

The Technograph was developed on the basis of the automatic ETA caliber 7750. A clever system of two superimposed dials makes for a perfectly clear display of the hours and minutes in the center of the reading zone, to the exclusion of all other indications, while the small seconds hand, the chronometer minute counter, the calendar and 300 division minute-circle are located in a peripheral zone on the lower dial.

The principle is as follows: the top dial in the centre of the watch (hours and minutes) is fitted on the bottom dial. The small seconds hand is displayed on a dial added at 9 o’clock, in a half-moon shape. The 30 minutes chronometer counter at 3 o’clock works on the same principle, the only difference being that the 15 first minutes are shown in the outer area starting at noon, and the next 15 in the inner area.

196116-3053.jpg

The oversized date aperture is located on the bottom dial at 6 o’clock. A flange with 300 divisions, applied to the outside diameter of the basic dial, enables the chronograph seconds and fifths of a second to be indicated by the centre seconds-hand. The dial assembly is made up of 5 separate components.

The case, in stainless steel, 18kt rose or white gold, measures 44mm. It has a domed sapphire crystal with AR coating and a sapphire display back secured with screws, guaranteeing water resistance to 100 meters.

The dial dial can be had in rhodium, anthracite or brown.

N E W M o d e l – Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon TMT – The World’s 1st Mechanical Thermometer Watch

Apr 18, 2005 - 06:31 PM

196231-3017.jpg

Based in Neuchatel, Ball has introduced a world’s first! The researchers at Ball Watch took the challenge to develop the world’s first night-reading mechanical thermometer watch using the operational basis in bimetallic expansion thermometers. It is known that if two different metal strips are bonded together and heated, the resultant strip will tend to bend toward the side of the metal with the lower expansion rate. Deflection is proportional to the square of the length and the temperature change, and inversely proportional to the thickness. A bimetallic spring can be calibrated to produce a predictable deflection at a preset temperature.

The motion produced by a bimetallic spring is small; to amplify it in a reasonably sized space, the bimetal strip may be wound in the form of a spiral or a helix. The outside edge of the spiral is pinned to the frame and a pointer is connected to the centre. As the temperature increases the spiral winds up deflecting the pointer clockwise. Knowing the coefficient of expansion of the two metals, their thickness, and the desired scale length and range, the total length of the spiral can be computed.

In general, the most difficult technical challenge the Ball technicians faced when working on the mechanical thermometer watch project was controlling the height of the entire movement module to be within 5.1 mm. Our master watchmakers have overcome many design obstacles such as controlling the height of the bimetal balance spring and the height of the milling of the main plate and bridge. We basically invent a unique system of fine regulation that does not block the bimetallic blade and patent the fine regulating screw. They conducted different rigid tests to ensure it can withstand 5,000 Gs shock resistance.

The Engineer Hydrocarbon TMT is capable to measure environment temperature from negative 35 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius. The measurement can be easily read off from the arch-shaped indicator. While its outer scale shows temperature at every 15 degrees interval and is incorporated with self-powered micro gas light (3H) tubes, the inner scale tells temperature at narrower intervals of 5 degrees.

The precision of the bimetal system is +3% from the point of regulating to the range of measure. For example, if we lay the hand at a temperature of 20 degree C, the precision between 10 degree C and 30 degree C will be of +0.3 degree C. The point of laying will always be precise.

The temperature records by the Engineer Hydrocarbon TMT is precise and instantaneous but it records the temperature inside the watch case which inevitably be affected by temperature of the wrist of the wearer. To reveal the actual environmental temperature, the watch should be taken off and wait till the inside of the watch has reached the environmental room temperature at namely 10 minutes.

Movement is the automatic Ball caliber 9018. The case, in stainless steel, measures 40mm X 15.2mm. The crystal is sapphire with AR coating. It is water resistant to 300 meters, is anti-magnetic to 12,000A/m, and shock resistant to 7,500Gs.

N E W M o d e l - Hublot Black Magic

May 27, 2005 - 01:39 PM

197274-2696.jpg

Press release May 2005

SUPERB “BLACK MAGIC”

Sketching out the concept on paper, Jean-Claude Biver passionately describes his vision of the "Fusion", Hublot’s new guiding principle. Hublot watches have a perfect affinity with the Sea, and Man has his own affinity with the land. Hublot has created a fusion between the sea, the land and man. Now it not only invests its energies in performance, but also in the quest for the fusion between the Swiss watch making tradition and the Art of the XX1st Century.

The new Hublot range breathes new life into the brand by giving it a new dimension in keeping with Hublot’s unique, timeless sense of design.

A rubber looks for the new SuperB “Black Magic” chrono which unveils an enlarged bezel in black rubber under the new Hublot concept of Fusion. In total harmony with the renowned Hublot black rubber strap, it is adorned with 12 larger titanium polished and sunken screws, giving it a renewed impact. The dial is decorated with large Arabic numerals and small red «minuterie » numbers and further protected by a double anti-reflection crystal enhanced by a black joint.

A screw-down crown, obviously made of natural rubber, with its two ‘UPTS’ chronograph push-pieces fitted with lockable rings, also in rubber, resolve the problem of water-resistance in chronographs once and for all. On the technical side, a transparent (translucent) crystal back leaves open to view the Dubois Depraz 42021 mechanical movement with automatic winding mechanism, enhanced by the addition of a flyback with new oscillating weight sporting the colours of the brand.

It is also time for the rebirth of the celebrated Hublot strap in natural rubber, which has symbolised the brand since its creation. Hublot has doted the "Black Magic" with a new deployant clasp combined with a now adjustable rubber strap that fits instantaneously to the different wrist sizes without loosing any of its timeless comfort with a flawless functionality, an emblematic characteristic of Hublot watches.

Water resistant to 100 metres, the chrono "Black Magic" is also available with a case treated in black PVD.

The new Hublot continues to display the tenacity, continuity, stability and insistence on quality that provide the key to its success.
