Long ago..before I ran across the whole replica world, I used to go to the flea market. Buy old mechanical watches and take them apart and put them back together. Sometimes I would take the parts of 2 or 3 watches and make one. Using the best parts.

Today I ran across my first "frankenwatch". I've had it put away because I moved to a new house a few years back. It is one of my favorites because it is so dependable and accurate. It started as an old Waltham mechanical but the case was total crap. Almost all of the chrome had popped off of the brass case but the watch functioned well. I found a Gruen Precision that had a stainless case so I swapped the Waltham movement into the Gruen case. It's been flawless since. I've always been very proud of this watch and it means alot to me. Very fine example of a quasi franken-watch! In fact so many of those vintage American watch cases were manufactured at the same place, its hard to tell what movement SHOULD be in them.

I have a rather rare Hamilton dual dial doctors watch in a platinum case... Unfortunately, although you would never know... The case is from a Gruen. I was once offered $2k for the watch as it was... imagine it being all Hamilton!
