UPO/ETA help.....crown stem

Recommended Posts

Well...after the UPO not seeing wrist time in a few weeks due to stripped crown threads i decided to give the 'hack' of grinding down the crown stem a little so i could reduce the overhang of the crown..

removing and replacing the stem is simple enough, ground down a bit replaced the stem, no worries but needed a little more, did a little more but now when i replace it its stuck in the date change mode and cant be pushed in further or pulled out further(ie wind or time change)

now...whats the issue...could i possibly have removed it when in the wrong mode(i dont think i did but its hard to push the pin and pull the stem at the same time so it may have changed from wind mode to date mode during removal), is this the/a problem?

any tips on a fix....if the stems to short eta stems are standard if im correct so i can always get a longer one and start again but there must be some issue stopping me even pulling it out to the 'change time' mode...

help welcome...

The keyless works clutch gear has been dislocated from the clutch lever. This happened when the stem was reinstalled and is easy to do, even if your careful. Basically the square boss on the stem doesn't go into the cooresponding square boss on the clutch gear, and as a result the clutch gear gets pushed out of location when you inserted the stem... Turning the stem while inserting it is mandatory (to make sure the squares line up) and going slow is also mandatory. Happens to me all the time, so your not alone.

The only fix is to disassemble the keyless works and put the parts and pieces back in their correct locations.

If you have never done this, it's not a simple task as the keyless works is quite complex. The ETA datasheets can be had here, they are a big help.
