As for letting down the mainspring, unless you remove the pallet arm, there is no reason to let the mainspring down.

Removing the balance can be done with the mainspring fully wound up. Only if you take the pallet out, does the escape wheel become free to spin and then you need the mainspring unwound.

Cheers for the tutorial both ajoe and Fran its much appreciated!Fixing a friends beginnermariner as the movement just stopped working randomally lost time and when you move the stem the hands wont move

so bought him the movement and am gonna replace it-in short the tut was brilliant!
