casanile Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 (edited) Last year I had a motorcycle accident with my SMP on my wrist. After the crash I stood up and began to check my hurts, exept too little holes on my knee, I was allright. But after a closed look to the vizor on my helmet I realized that it saved half of my face. Without it I was the new phantom of the opera... Wear your helmet bikers mates! So While I was checking my injuries, I saw my poor SMP chrono on my wrist. Destroyed, I surfed the tarmac with it on 20 meters. My hand and my arm were OK, but regarding the exploded glass, the very deep scratches on the bezel and the clasp, I can say that my SMP chrono saved my wrist as my helmet does for my pretty face. Still working fine I decided to rebuilt it. Stage 1: New aftermarker insert, new gen crystal, new rep bracelet I decided to keep the scratched bezel as it was to keep the adventurer look. Gen 2220.80 rep old factory 2254.50 and STAGE 1 Homer's SMP chrono. I wasn't happy with my work, it wasn't finished. Minute hand was bended, the dial suffered and remaining scratches began to p...s me off. Stage2: I decided to buy all the gen parts I could and the tools too. This time for two projects, my black SMP is involved too this time. The 2 projects idea came from a mistake, when I ordered a gen used bezel and insert for the chrono. the Seller shipped me the one for the classic SMP case. So I bought new gen dial and gen hands for the chrono, and a complete case AR coated of this model from trusty: Do you see the insert? This is the best, close to perfection, pearl is flat, centered and the font is accurate. Now it's becoming complicated... I took off the gen blue insert to put it on the new case bezel. I removed the previously bought crystal in order to replace it on my black SMP as I made for the perfect black insert Which is now on the gen SMP bezel. Am I clear? I had to remove the bezel from the case to install the blue insert. Now it's impossible to put it back... The bezel construction is not the same, the "centering metal string" (sorry I don't remember the exact name ) placed between bezel and case can't stay in. I tried everything, no way, I'm not skilled... So I'm ready to ship everything to Tomhighway, He'll do that for a very fair price. In summary: My black one will have a gen crystal a gen bezel and a perfect rep insert. My chrono will have gen dial gen hands and gen insert. This hobby is really becoming better and better for my wallet... Edited October 29, 2008 by antomarty
Toadtorrent Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Wow...exciting. That is quite a tale!!
casanile Posted October 29, 2008 Author Report Posted October 29, 2008 Yes, kind of... But I'm really disapointed I can't do that myself. I'll post pics of both inside bezels to explain why I can't do that work myself. My english is not good enough to explain it by words. I'm sure I can replace crystal, dial and hands myself, but on this new case, the "multi-gonal metallic string" is a real enigma for me. You'll understand with pics.
Toadtorrent Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 Well...you're diving into ground for modding that is completely foreign to me. I was tempted to do a simple crown/tube replacement which should have been a simple drilling out of the tube, and adding in epoxy. I chickened out, and had The Zigmeister do it.
