First watch Recommendation

Recommended Posts

Hey!!! First of all, I got to say that this forum is amazing! There is so much information in here. Ive been reading non stop since I joined and I am just wondering what your recommendations are as a first rep watch a noob should get. An automatic or a quartz? It seems like an automatic is harder to take care of but then again I am not sure. I am looking into a few that are 21J asian auto and 23J asian auto...will these type of movements last?

Quartz are far cheaper and easier to maintain. Autos are finicky and can be costly to maintain. However...the best reps are of auto based gens and that's what most people buy here. Personally, I'm fascinated by a mechanical marvel going tick-toc on my wrist and see no reason to go to quartz...except to have a watch to set the time to when the power reserve on my manual runs dry.

Read my Noob Guide linked in my signature and look up a post on movements by The Zigmeisterzumba...or find a post of his and find the link in his signature.

Many people have descent success with the Asian 21j vs. ETA based...but ETA based watches at much higher expense theoretically can be maintained by most watchmakers with parts being readily available. Chronos based on the A7750 movement are the highest cost of them all...but all the super reps out there are based on them. Properly maintained, an A7750 movement can last as long as its gen counterpart. The issue is finding somebody qualified to service it properly and the cost of doing so (being close to the cost of the rep).

Welcome aboard and good luck.

Haha thaks for the replies..I think I am going to test the water by getting an asian auto and see how that goes. ;) Thanks again guys.

Great. Good luck with it. They often have slipping datewheels that can easily be fixed. The rotors are often loud...but that's alright...and the best part is, the movements are so cheap, when it dies, pop in a new one instead of fixing it. You'll just have to save the datewheel or datewheel overlay.
