mwee
Hi guys, Just received the gen dial and hand set for my Pam 88. I have taken some pics for a comparison shot on differences between the gen, DSN and rep dials. This is not a review but rather just a shot for everyone to see the difference and also offer any comments. I am in no position to do any review but would love to hear feedback from anyone especially the many Pam experts we have here! First a shot of all 3 dials. DSN dial on left, gen dial in the middle and the ultimate 88 from Cartel Individual shots of the dials DSN gen dial Ultimate version Pam 88 At first glance, there really isn't any difference (at least to me). I must say that both DSN and the cartel have really made a good dial. The only real difference would be the silver sub-dials. To me, the DSN is a bit too silverish, the cartel rep dial a bit too brownish. However, I believe that the DSN sub-dial is closer to gen. Text printing is good on both rep dials. However, when compared to gen dial, the cartel printing is bolder and therefore more gen like. Maybe its the distortion from crystal but it seems the cartel rep dial text is a bit bigger than gen. DSN loses out in this prospect in the sense that the printing seems lighter. For the date window, I think the DSN dial is really great! There is a nice beveling same as gen! The date-window on the cartel dial is terrible. To me, it looks like just a cuto-out without any bevelling. Lume markers are very good on both DSN and cartel dial, very similar to gen. For me however, I think that DSN is a just a bit darker (greenish?) and the cartel markers are spot on! It would seem that both DSN and rep dials are really good but if I had to chose between them, I would go with the DSN dial for the more accurate sub-dial and better DW bevelling. Finally, a shot of my gen dial and hand set! Now need to source for a few more parts and it will be off to The Zigmeister to make my Pam 88 into an ultimate franken! Thanks for looking and would really welcome any comments and feedback.
siesta181
Hi Mark, How's the beveling on the date windows? Can't really see from the angle photos were taken. Congrats in being able to source for all these. Gonna be a beauty from the looks of things. Cheers Siesta181

The bevelling on the DSN is good, just like gen. the one on the cartel dial is crap, there isn't any!
projectologist
I see that you have an E Series gen dial. The giveaway is the "L SWISS MADE L" is under the lower 12. Can't find a rep version like this... congratulations on a hard to find gen 88 dial!

sander
Great parts man, it will be a wonderful franken one! I have some questions: Will those gen hands fit the asian movement? Can you use the original dial feet with the asain movement? Is it the picture or is there something wrong with the left side of the DSN sub-dial? Very interesting project

I am pretty sure the hands will fit except for the GMT one. That will be a question mark. There is nothing wrong with the DSN dial, just the pics I suppose. Not too sure how all these will work out but what the heck, have to give it a try, right?

Watchmeister
Just curious, did Panerai change the placement of the L swiss L to the same level of the 12 on later gen dials or are both the DSN and Ultimate wrong?
mwee
Right! I would have taken the risk as well I hope tih scan com out as nice as your BP project! Just curious, did Panerai change the placement of the L swiss L to the same level of the 12 on later gen dials or are both the DSN and Ultimate wrong? From what I understand, mine is the earlier version and the rep dials are the later versions. Both are right on the L swiss L placement.
scoobs1971
Congrats on your gen dial! From what I could see at the AD the gen has a slightly lighter black color than the deep black Cartel dial. The DSN dial seemed more correct. Now that you can compare all three of them which one is the most accurate? Does your gen dial have concentric circles in the subdial like the DSN dial? How do the gen hands compare to the Cartel hands?
sander
concentric circles Wow.....
tgchrono2
from all the above discussion i see the best rep alternative to GEN is the DSN Pam088 gmt.

How do the gen hands compare to the Cartel hands? Hi For dial colour, you seem to be right. The Cartel dial seems the darkest, followed by gen then DSN dial. As for the concentric circles, it is in the sub-dial but it looks finer than on DSN dial. From what I can see, it is more pronounced on the DSN dial whereas the circles on the gen dial are more fine and not as pronounced as on the DSN dial. The rep hands are really quite good. Can't really tell the difference. from all the above discussion i see the best rep alternative to GEN is the DSN Pam088 gmt. For the dial , yes I thinnk DSN is better, but I think the CGs on the cartel is better. As for the hands, it would also seem that the cartel rep 88 hands are closer to gen though I have not really seen DSN hands except in pics! As for Sander's question n whether the dial feet can fit Asian movement, I think it probably can as I was comparing the location of the dial feet on both DSN and gen dial and they look to be the same position and size.
